The Truly Heartwarming Tale Of How Microsoft Bought Double Fine

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Money talks.

With Microsoft's acquisition of quirky indie studio Double Fine Productions, announced during the company's E3 2019 presentation, Microsoft now has 15 studios under its Xbox Game Studios umbrella. While president Tim Schafer has confirmed the purchase will have no effect on how the California-based studio conducts its business, the company did take to Twitter to satirize the news.

Schafer, in a 30-second video posted to the official Double Fine Twitter account, basically said Microsoft rolled up with "a bunch of money" and made the team an offer they couldn't refuse. The video features all the slow-mo head movement and melodrama that would make any soap opera jealous.

The studio's next game, Rad, a post-apocalyptic action game published by Bandai Namco, is set to release on August 20 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Psychonauts 2--set to arrive sometime in 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One--will mark the studio's first game published under the Xbox Game Studios moniker.

Tim Schafer still apologized, with anita sarkeesian, for having a male anatomy.

To this day I do not play his games.

So, I'm relieved Psychonauts 2 is still releasing on PS4, of course. It's just gonna be strange if Double Fine has to include the Xbox Game Studios logo on the start-up credits for the PS4 version, and on the back of the case in the copyrights section. I'm not against the idea, but it's odd that this might be the closest to "cross-platform play" we'll see on PS4 outside of Fortnite, haha.

*shrug* NA devs seem to do better with MS than Japanese ones do. Some swear by them. Others go bad. I suppose a studio with a more niche market would probably be left alone by MS.

Of course, MS wouldn't do something like this unless they wanted to make some kind of splash. Bankrolling Brutal Legend 2 would do it.

I think what this comment section fails to realize is that Psychonauts 2 was never really coming out in like 3-4 years time. Like we knew this ages ago, the game was being works on via multiple development phases: the first, the one when they did a funding to raise money so it could happen, the aquisition then announcement in 2015. Folks must be confused that they acquired them like a year ago or something but they have been working on that game diligently.

Also I wouldn't call it niche tho that's just Triple AAA live service talk. We have plenty of 1-player action/puzzle/adventure games. Too many are just not digging enough to find solid gems.

I'm curious how the purchase is going to affect the games that DF was publishing, not developing. Specifically, I'm wondering what's going to happen to "Samurai Gunn 2," which, I think, is set for next year.
