The Star Wars Prequels Have Held Up Pretty Well, Darth Vader Says

Star Wars actor Hayden Christensen feels vindicated when he sees how beloved the prequel trilogy is today.

There was a lot of hype surrounding the Star Wars prequels when they first launched, as well as a lot of negative reception for the trilogy that fleshed out the fall of the Republic and the Jedi Order. These days, those films are more fondly remembered, something that Darth Vader believes is due to them having aged surprisingly well over the decades.

In an interview with Empire, actor Hayden Christensen explained that seeing the films receive more positive recognition from fans has been a vindicating moment for the actor.

"The journey that I’ve been on with Star Wars over the last 20-plus years--it's been a wild ride, and where we're at now is really meaningful to me," Christensen said. "I think that those movies have held up well over time. It feels like vindication for the work that we did. Everyone that worked on those movies thought that we were part of something special. We all wanted to do our very best work, and we cared a lot about it. And so to see the response from the fans now, it's very cool."

Christensen played Anakin Skywalker and Episodes 2 and 3, eventually transforming into Darth Vader along the way. He'd return to the role in 2022's Obi-Wan Kenobi series, seeking revenge for his mutilation at the hands of the former Jedi master.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace will be returning to theaters for a limited time on Star Wars Day, May 4. In case you missed it in 1999, this is the film that kickstarted the prequel trilogy with pod racing, galactic intrigue, and an unforgettable lightsaber duel between Kenobi and his nemesis Darth Maul.

The future also looks busy for the franchise as the next film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is scheduled to arrive in 2026. Then there's the return of Daisy Ridley's Rey Skywalker in a new Star Wars film, Logan director James Mangold is working on a movie chronicling the dawn of the Jedi Order, Dave Filoni has his own Star Wars movie in development, and Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy is reportedly also still going ahead.

I thought the prequel trilogy was okay, and ROTS is one of the best SW movies. I am in my 40s and I grew up with the original Trilogy too. To those who moan about the prequels, you deserve the new trilogy. You hadn't seen what a terrible Star Wars trilogy could be, and Disney was happy to show you.

The sequel trilogy is so bad they make the prequel trilogy look good. If we didn't have the sequels we'd still be dumping on the prequels.

@emblurr: You can still dump on the Prequels, they’re still as bad as ever. They just aren’t the only bad Star Wars movies now.

Episode 1 is still my favorite. It introduced me to so many cool stuff when I was a kid: space battles, pod racing, lightsaber duels and space magic. Really liked Jar-Jar too and I still don't get the hate. Couldn't enjoy other Sci-Fi franchises like Star Trek or Halo because of how underwhelming they felt compared to Star Wars.

@restatbonfire: Nemesis might just be the most boring movie I have ever seen. The reboots were ok but they don't hold a candle next to Star Wars

@cboye18: The TNG movies are mostly pretty bad, and Nemesis is maybe the worst. They do not do the show justice.

The prequels were awful when they were released and they've held up to that pretty well over time.

Hayden Christensen is a horrible actor unless he actually plays a character who seems completely dumbfounded and has very few lines. Then he plays Hayden Christensen superbly.

I don't like the prequels. Here's why:

-awful aged CGI (T2 is older than the prequels but it has much better timeless CGI that still holds up well)

-Jar Jar Binks

-killing off two interesting characters too early (Darth Maul and Qui Gon Jinn)

-Hayden Christensen's acting (I HATE SAND!)

-emasculating Darth Vader by writing him as a whiny hormonal teenager who got catfished by some old Sith pervert

-turning Anakin Skywalker into a two time mass child murderer (this was really gratuitous, Lucas wrote him to kill masses of children not just once but twice)

@GalvatronType_R: Alot of these takes are objectively terrible.

Like this, it's like don't even understand the point of the movies

-emasculating Darth Vader by writing him as a whiny hormonal teenager who got catfished by some old Sith pervert

-turning Anakin Skywalker into a two time mass child murderer (this was really gratuitous, Lucas wrote him to kill masses of children not just once but twice)

Clue - He's not suppose to be a badass. That's the point. The character is an optimistic kid taken by the Jedi and eventually groomed to turn against them looking like a drug addict by the end ( by design). It is Palpatine who suggests he pairs with Padme. It's the Jedi who fail to save his mother. And the child killing scene. Notice how that kid looks suspiciously like Jake Lloyd? Darth Vader himself is designed to be a loser. That is the point.

It's stuff like this the reason you ended up with the Disney movies just repeating A New Hope in a loop and replying on nostalgia bait.

@GalvatronType_R: I agree with most of your points, Jar Jar Bink character to me was intentional as he was very annoying, but he served his purpose. I was not into the prequels with the exception of Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One. I love to see the beginnings of Darth Vader how he turned out the way he did. But I also dislike the movies events after Darth Vader was killed and found them boring as it was mainly still focused on the OGs and very little on the other characters.

I was hoping to see Thawn advance as he was cruel but in a smart way and read the trilogy with him (Can't remember the titles sadly). It might be able to be translated into a movie or limited series. The original three will always be my favorite I figured there will be some dropping off after the original three as the tech was not new it was just the story that was told was not exciting or inspiring even the music from John Williams(think that was his name) was excellent from the original three).

They do look better in light of the crap that is Disney/Lucasfilm, but I'm from the OT generation and despite the flaws, I like them.

Revenge Of The Sith is the best Starwars movie imo.

Take it over Empire.

They are better than Disney's sequel trilogy, at least.

One way in which the prequels are better is that they have very diverse, creative and colorful alien designs.

Whereas the alien designs in the sequels are all kind of the same variations of flat brown and gray human/dog/rodent faces

Ehh, those movies were bad then and they're still bad now. TV shows, games, and books have since done a lot of work to flesh out and make more palatable the characters and events of the Prequels, but the movies themselves still mostly suck. : \
