The Matrix 4 Is Happening With Keanu Reeves And Carrie-Anne Moss

Isn't Neo totally dead?

20 years ago, the Wachowskis created one of the most memorable movies of the 20th century, The Matrix. This cultural phenomenon spawned two sequels, and while things have been quiet for more than a decade, the franchise isn't stopping. The Matrix 4 is officially going to happen.

Lana Wachowski is set to return to write and direct the film in the franchise, and Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity respectively, according to Variety. That's a bit puzzling because at the end of the third movie, The Matrix Revolutions, Neo sacrificed himself in order to save the world. Regardless, it's science fiction, so there will undoubtedly be a way to bring him back from the dead..

Now Playing: The Matrix 4 Is Happening With Keanu Reeves And Carrie-Anne Moss - GS Universe News Update

Joining Wachowski on writing duties will be Aleksander Hemon (Love Island) and David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas). The movie should go into production in early 2020.

"We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana," Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich said. "Lana is a true visionary--a singular and original creative filmmaker--and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe."

The first reports of a new Matrix movie began in 2017, with Ready Player One's Zak Penn writing the script. Penn said the movie would expand the Matrix universe and not reboot it. Michael B. Jordan was also in talks to star. However, it's been completely silent since then, even though there were conflicting reports that the relaunch was cancelled back in May 2019. Both Penn was not mentioned for Matrix 4. Also not mentioned was Lilly Wachowski, who wrote and directed the original Matrix movies alongside her sister.

The first Matrix movie brought in $463,517,383 worldwide, and it spawned two sequels: 2003's Matrix Reloaded--grossing $742,128,461 worldwide--and Matrix Revolutions--taking in $427,343,298 worldwide. The franchise has earned more than $1.6 billion in total.

2019 marks the 20th anniversary of The Matrix, and while the first movie still holds up, the sequels--primarily Revolutions--are still as problematic as you remember. Check out The Matrix Sequels' 34 Dumbest Moments to relive the weirdness.

Good! They need to fix the travesty that were the 2nd and 3rd movies. Completely changed what " The One ' was supposed to be. Lost the whole narrative.

This might sound really sexist or closed-minded; but any movie directed by a female is an automatic no-go for me. I’ll even go so far as to say they suck…its just not in their DNA; kinda like driving.

@tingtong: It's the same directors of the original trilogy, (well, one of the Wachowskis anyway). Not sure what the prob is.

And yes, your comment is beyond sexist and close-minded on so many levels, (women can't drive or direct movies because of their DNA?)

In the future, you should probably keep ridiculous assertions like that to yourself.

@aross2004:

Simply speaking from experience my dude…I think women are awesome at many things; perhaps even better than men.

Nothing wrong with my comment though.. getting offended by it is tho (not assuming you are); but its the internet so best to look at things with a sense of humor…if this was a face2face convo it would be all laughs.

I have no filter on my mouth & nor should anybody else unless you live in a f’d up country. As long as nobody’s directly insulting/disrespecting an individual no harm done.

Its The Matrix & they have an unlimited budget so of course they have a leg up on all the other horridness movies I seen and you already know I’ll be watching it…just in a cheap, risk-free way.

“...expand the Matrix universe and not reboot it”

They should call it Matrix Rebooted just to have some fun with the audience

While I agree that the best movie is the original Matrix in both script, presentation and mythos, and holds up rather well, the sequels are still quite enjoyable. I do not understand why people vilify them so much. I always saw them more like popcorn material. Still, how are they going to retcon the previous trilogy? Still.... Keanu "Breathtaking" Reeves.

I was hoping the 5 or 6 additional John Wick sequels they are planning would keep Keanu Reeves too busy to let this happen.

Please make it as good as The Matrix and not suck like Reloaded or Revolution. The Matrix is one of my favorite films. I watch it and enjoy it then I force myself to watch the other 2 to complete the story. Err, series. And please don't call the new NEO "NEO 2.0" because that's just bad writing.

@bdrtfm: There’s no way The Matrix 4 can ever be as good as The Matrix. The mystique and the originality of The Matrix will never be matched by any of its sequels. Especially with all of the discoveries in the past 25 years, a cyber world just isn’t that amazing any more.

@bdrtfm:

I'm skeptical about a fourth Matrix, but specifically for the opposite reason - the 2nd and 3rd movies were excellent, and the entire trilogy was very strong. Fan reaction to the latter two films was not as positive. The films brought in more complex philosophy, and leaned heavily into Gnosticism and other esoteric belief systems. They provided the scenario wherein the Demiurge has created the prison of the soul that is reality, Agent Smith was positioned as the destroyer figure who would end the prison of reality - the actual "Savior Figure" - and Neo was given the option to allow the illusion to collapse, or betray his ideals and stand with the Architect (of lies) to preserve the status quo, and he chose the latter.

It's an amazing story, including it's second two volumes, but as it grew more complex and symbolic audiences viewing the story only through a literal lens of hard sci-fi were turned off. The only logical place that wouldn't cheapen the story is to go further down that philosophical rabbit hole, which was already quite alienating to mass market audiences. I would probably enjoy that, as would a relatively minority of Matrix fans, but it's unlikely to be well received, if it does. The alternative is to make a film that "apologizes" for the very good work done in the original trilogy, possibly backpedaling on the themes and narrative, and attempting to rationalize storytelling that should remain quasi- symbolic.

The second two Matrix films had excellent writing, they just wasn't the genre and subject matter that some were expecting. As there's no pleasing everybody, I have serious reservations as to the intent, and the need, for a fourth film in a trilogy I greatly enjoyed, which as it stands now, is perfectly complete and finished.

@xgalacticax: It costs us nothing to just call them what they want. Doing otherwise is just spite or discomfort towards something different from us, as much as we might try to come up with logical reasons to justify that discomfort.

@megagood2345: There's nothing spiteful in telling the truth. Loving someone is helping them see that truth rather than affirming them in confusion, which WOULD be the spiteful thing to do to someone. If someone is an alcoholic, and accepts that as their truth, you don't tell them it's okay, you help them out of it. Gender dysphoria is a mental disorder. So is anorexia and body dysmorphia. I guess it costs you nothing to tell the anorexic that they are fat and let them starve themselves to death, as long as you 'accepted' them. I have my own problems, and I don't want anyone telling me my defects are okay if I think they are. According to UK stats, more than half of people with gender dysphoria have attempted suicide and 80% of them have thought about it. But it's okay, lets call them what they want, and let them mutilate and kill themselves, instead of helping them recover from the mental disorder...because we are so tolerant and accepting, and anyone who thinks otherwise MUST be a spiteful bigot.

My guess is that Neo "copied" himself prior to dying in the third film. His essence is somewhere in the Matrix. That would be the only way to explain him being "alive."

Or, the machines instituted some kind of religion to better have control of its the Matrix's inhabitants and uses Neo's likeness as a figure head.

Interested to see how they write and extend this series.

Glad to hear it’s a continuation with both one of the original creators and actors. I’d personally love if it...well, I don’t know that what happened in 3 is actually real. Pretty sure he “real” world was always another simulation.

I’d expect this to be good or great, but with loud haters attacking it every five seconds, as per the custom with The Matrix, Terminator, and Star Wars in the old days ??‍♀️

@mikephalin: It was racist, because both authoritative characters in NEO's story (Oracle and Morpheus) were black... oh wait.. It's racist because NEO should've been a black transgender pansexual woman with blue-dyed hair.

What if they didn't bring Trinity back, but the Matrix basically recycled her appearance and Carrie-Anne Moss will be playing an agent and adversary to Neo?

@ohrenclez: extremely plausible, though I’ve always thought the “real” world in the matrix is another layer of simulation...particularly after neo was using superpowers in the real world. Yet inexplicably 3 doesn’t address that at all.

@wolfpup7: That would be an interesting story to tell in the 4th one...they could create another "real" world with different esthetics and do something similar to Inception with them jumping between simulations

I'm getting really excited for this movie right now :D
