The Marvels Had Worst 1st and 2nd Weekends In MCU History At US Box Office

Second-weekend box office numbers slumped by 79%.

The Marvels had the worst-ever start at the US box office in MCU history and the film didn't do great in its second weekend either. The superhero movie starring Brie Larson made $10.2 million for its second weekend in the US, a 79% decline from its $46 million opening, according to Variety.

Before The Marvels, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had the worst-ever second-weekend decline (69%) in MCU history.

The Marvels has now made $65 million at the domestic box office. For comparison, 2019's Captain Marvel made $153 million at the US box office for its first weekend alone. Some are questioning whether or not The Marvels will reach that number during its entire lifetime run in theaters.

Globally, The Marvels has earned $161 million. The movie had a reported budget of $220 million, and that doesn't factor in marketing and advertising.

The Marvels was released just after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended, so the film's stars were not available to promote the film in the run up to release like they normally would. Also, comparing against the original Captain Marvel isn't perfect, complete, or fair, given there was no pandemic back then.

In any event, The Marvels is likely to go down as the worst-performing movie MCU in history across 33 films to date. Whether or not the so-called "superhero fatigue" might have factored in is unknown. But what is certain is that Marvel plans to release just one movie--Deadpool 3--in 2024.

GameSpot's The Marvels review scored the film an 7/10 and called it "meaningless fun."

People assumed Captain Marvel movie did well and it needed a sequel. Truth was only reason anyone even went to see that movie was it was between Avengers films and people assumed it would have something to do with it.

now I must saw Ms Marvel did an amazing job. I cannot wait to see more of her.

My 12 year old daughter loved it along with my 8 & 9 year old sons. I found the Khan family very enjoyable.

My review:

Kids & Family movie - 6.5/10 it was fun, bad villain but somewhat believable story. Followed the plot to a T no real character development except maybe a bit from Mrs. Khan. Cats are cute.

Adult me - Action Adventure Film like avengers was - 1/10 it was silly no real stakes as at any time Captain Marvel could have just gone ahead and wiped out the Kree before they could do anything. Acting was weak except for two of the main stars Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris along with the rest of the Khan family. In fairness to the actress that played the villain terrible writing for that part.

People have grown tired of Marvel's assembly line approach to movies and tv shows. Characters are interchangable and plots are an afterthought. Once the Avengers storyline was finished with Endgame they wanted something else but instead they got a minor league ballteam version of the Avengers.

It would have done even worse if they spoke about it.

When you score lower than Eternals, then it’s time to start choosing which stories people have genuine interest in.

The only real stories they have in their wheelhouse that people want to see is MCU X-Men, Thunderbolts, and Blade. Perhaps if they weren’t so concerned with being friendly with every single special interest group in the known universe, we could have gotten those way before now.

Agreed, but I'll add Deadpool 3 to that list... as long as it retains its rated R humor & violence.

@ZombieVirolina: The couldn't do anything with X-Men until Disney bought Fox, and Ms. Marvel was part of the plan to bring them into the MCU. Now that this bombed, it may take even longer to get that going.

And no one cares about the Thunderbolts.

I’m sure they’ll put Venom in the Thunderbolts to give it the star power it needs.

I'm in no hurry to see it, though I would like to at some point. Oct-Dec is such a busy time of year, that going to a theater just isn't in the cards anymore like it used to be. I might make an exception for a truly big MCU event, but Marvels isn't that. Not that I dislike the idea of it, but it isn't a "day 1" kind of MCU project like some of their other heroes are.

This is one I'll wait to watch on Disney + in January or February or whenever it starts streaming.

@Chutebox: No, but the pandemic destroyed the movie theater industry. So it is fair to note that box office comparisons are skewed by the fact.

So yeah, no pandemic...no pandemic at all *whistles* 🙄

@mrbojangles25: that's not a pandemic, that's an endemic virus like the cold or flu which is all covid really is after the mutations it went through. People will still get it, some more severely thatn others due to underlying health problems, and they'll develop natural immunity which will help fight off future mutations. Yes, everything is fine. But catastrophize if you need to.

@ives74: fair enough.

And I wasn't catastrophizing, just worried about my elderly parents. Flu is one thing to them as they are fairly healthy, but COVID...not so sure that wouldn't put them in a hospital.

I didn't know anyone even a little excited for this one. Not even the people who day-1'ed every other MCU film (up to Endgame) with me.

Waiting for the PC brigade to accuse everyone who avoided it of being mysogynists... whereas reality shows it's just a poor film.

@TTDog: It's probably at least a bit of both. I didn't even know it was already coming out but then I don't give a damn about MCU for a long while.
It's probably a mediocre movie - but so were a lot of other MCU movies that did pretty well (which might be the true cause of "superhero fatigue" and not just the number of superhero movies).
But, and this is a big but, the movie has 20% of 1.0 ratings on IMDB. The movie might be mediocre but I seriously doubt a fifth of everyone who saw it thinks it deserves a 1.
If I ever go see it I wager it will probably rank between "meh" and "totally unremarkable but okaish". But that's still higher than a 1

@mogan: but it is here. Gamespot ran an article last week about Stephen King calling out fanboys as misogynists. You couldn’t even comment on that article as it was such a scorching-hot take. Gamespot didnt want anyone else’s opinions to contradict ol’ Stevie’s. So apparently his opinion is gospel.

@TTDog: Nah, come up with a new excuse and stop being the victim; progressives aren't hiding up in the rafters waiting to pounce on every opportunity (though I'm sure you could find some idiot saying we are misogynists lol).

The movie failed because people are sick of Disney's BS. They overplayed their hand, and their quality has suffered to boot.

@mrbojangles25: Read any review and it confirms the point TTDog was making. People hated the movie but outlets accused fans Racism and Misogyny.

@cwilli11: I never said there wouldn't be a bunch of nonsense about it, I was more or less saying you shouldn't give BS articles (as you cited) much credence.

Go read some other news about it, some serious reviews, form your own conclusion. Don't be swayed by the extremes.
