The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum Dev Apologizes For Game's Poor Launch, Promises Fixes

"Please accept our sincere apologies for any disappointment this may have caused."

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum launched on May 25, and its release was not what developer Daedalic Entertainment wanted to see. The game received very bad review scores, and many people have pointed out the game's numerous glitches and other oddities. In a statement, Daedalic apologized for the "underwhelming experience" people have reported.

"We acknowledge and deeply regret that the game did not meet the expectations we set for ourselves or for our dedicated community," the developer said. "Please accept our sincere apologies for any disappointment this may have caused."

Now Playing: The Lord of the Rings: Gollum | Story Trailer

Deadalic went on to say that its developers are now working to address the game's bugs and technical issues. "We are committed to providing you with the patches that will allow you to enjoy the game to its fullest potential," the studio said.

Daedalic pledged to keep fans updated on the status of forthcoming updates and improvements. "Your passion and dedication as players have been the driving force behind our determination to make things right," the studio said.

On launch day, May 24, Daedalic put out a statement from CEO Carsten Fichtelmann who said the game is "true to the lore created by professor Tolkien..." Middle-earth Enterprises, the company that owns the rights to the series, said it was a "phenomenal experience" working with Daedalic over the years on the game.

GameSpot's The Lord of the Rings: Gollum review scored the game a 2/10. Our reviewer noted that the game crashed 120 times during their playthrough.

Daedalic has publicly discussed its ambition to make more Lord of the Rings games, but whether or not the reaction to LOTR: Gollum will change those plans is unknown. A Switch version of the game is in development and is scheduled for release in the future, but many are wondering if the studio will see it through given the reaction to the game so far.

Gollum might not be the Lord of the Rings game you're looking for, but there are plenty of other games in the series coming up.

Notice how they messed up the name of their game in the first sentence. "The Lord of Ring: Gollum". Highly indicative of how they treat the dev time of this game and possibly how they'll treat the patches that'll be rolled out in the future.

This game cannot be fixed in one update it needs to be revamped and relaunched to be fixed.

"The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum Dev Would Like ...

to thank the gamers for being unpaid game testers, for finding the bugs so we (lmao) do not have to. Thank you for paying for a broken game ,and taking these soulless apologies, and NOT refunding the game like good little sheep you are. Thank you for pre-ordering this licensed game so we know the profit margins; allowing us to not spend a dime more then needed, in order to get your money. Really, we thank you for not refunding, because just mentioning a patch means you will forget all about it, and just take it. Just the name LOTR, means we are going to make some money regardless of the steaming turd we put out. Once again the mass market gamers are just that stupid, and we appreciate it. "

Seriously though, if you live in the US, please get a refund. It does not matter whether digital or physical, whether you played it one hour or 100hrs, there is NO set law on getting a refund. Email, the DDP, the store, the market place .. whatever, show proof of purchase and clearly state the problems. Ask for a refund, ask again, and again, and again. IF denied at any point, CC the email to your states BBB or your state or federal Consumer Protection Division. Which usually resolves it quickly. If denied by a brick and mortar store, ask to escalate it up, ask again, and do the above.

Apathy by gamers/consumers in the gaming industry only make this problem worse. They know most people paying with mommy's money, will just lay the game down after a few hours, moan about it on social media, and forget about it. Do not be part of the problem, stop encouraging broken games.

I am getting so tired of games that have to be apologized for at release. No sweat off my ass personally, I wasn't going to get this one either way, but this routine is definitely getting old. 🤨

Offer returns not excuses. Stop launching games that are garbage. We need an FDA for games, some kinda safety board to make sure devs aren't hauling in big numbers on preorders of games that don't meet the standards the company claims they will.

@astrokidwell: Just do away with pre-orders. No pre-orders, no reason to immediately get a refund on a broken piece of garbage. Given most games are delivered digitally now, pre-orders only exist to sell extra crap and scam people into buying garbage games.

There’s nothing to fix. The whole thing is the problem. I have no idea how this studio managed to get this license, they’re amateurs.

I'm so glad I've swapped to indie gaming lol.

Dead Cells, Monster Train, Darkest Dungeon, Binding of Isaac, Vampire Survivors. Like, there's so much variety and fun to be had in this indie gaming space.

Yeah, there's a lot of stinkers of course. But the few diamonds there are, makes up for it

@alphazonex: Dude, those are really good games.

I Platinum'd Vampire Survivors & didn't even know it.

The game was great. But there's absolutely no reason for me to keep

playing... I actually broke the Guy who starts with RED PISTOL

& Gets +1% might per level up..

Don't find the never ending Golden egg dropping guardians!!!

At the end of that round Dude had 1400 eggs and now hes a

god.. aka he's boring!

~~BUT those are pretty much the only epic Indie games.

Look in the last 2-3 years= not much..

AAA is pick n choose.. And crap like that new Vampire game on Gamepass

are why i am supe rpicky. like you.

Not to defend them, but this is common in other games like Jedi Survivor and the Last Of Us PC port. It took more than a month to fix a DRM problem with RE8 after release.

All of these games got away with it. At best, a tiny 2-3 lines at the bottom of the review, at worst, wholly ignored.

@uninspiredcup: This isn't a 'port' problem. This is a half developed game problem. It's not just a problem on PC.

This context does not change the criticism.

There is literally nothing to fix.

You can't fix a game no one wanted with a patch. The fundamental mechanics and game loop of this game are just flat-out unappealing. It doesn't help that the art direction makes the game look like an XB360 movie tie-end Kinect game.

I doubt 95% of people would play this game even if it was Game Pass.

@illegal_peanut: Most of the reviewers I watched on YouTube couldn't even bring themselves to finish the game.
Sometimes because of game-breaking bugs,
but oftentimes just because it was too simple and boring and clunky.

For an experience that feels like an early-access indie game.

This is 100% a publisher issue. Nacon is the publisher of this steaming pile. You know what else they published recently? Blood Bowl 3. One of the worst reviewed and most broken games in recent memory. Oh yea. And lets not forget they basically stole a game from one of their studios recently. This is a publisher that I won't touch with a 10 foot pole. Do NOT support any game published by this wreck of a company.

They can fix the bugs and the performance, but in this case it still won't fix the game.

How many more times do people have to hear this before games stop being released in such poor conditions? People are becoming numb to these apologies. Though I’m sure the developers themselves feel bad, the publisher doesn’t care. They are always the driving force behind a bad launch. Every single new game this year has released in a bad state.

Just effing disgusting. Devs want to turn this into the new normal. Release a broken game then throw an apology and a promise of a patch that will fix it.

But know what? I can't blame them completely. This is clearly the result of some very tight deadlines being given by the higher ups. CEOs too greedy to realize that it takes time to make a quality product. But I suppose there are too many suckers out there that such a thing isn't necessary anymore.

make it the new normal they have been doing it for over 20 years already it's way past being the new normal.

companies have way to much power a ceo of a car company decides to cut costs by using a cheaper part that ends up failing and people die.

not only does the ceo not get jail time for any of the deaths that are his fault for deciding to use a substandard part the fucker gets a raise and a vacation.

and it happens damn near every freaking day no matter the company
