The Last Of Us Multiplayer Game Canceled, Naughty Dog Will Focus On Single-Player Games

The game's live-service elements would have meant a future without the team's single-player games.

55 Comments

The Last of Us multiplayer project, which Naughty Dog says it had been calling The Last of Us Online internally, has been canceled. The studio revealed the news in a blog post, citing the game's ambitions as being so big that it would require the full attention of the studio, thereby taking any part of the team off of narrative-driven single-player games, the likes of which have been Naughty Dog's M.O. to this point.

"In ramping up to full production, the massive scope of our ambition became clear," the statement reads in part. "To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games. So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage."

The fate of The Last of Us Online has seemed in doubt for some time now. Earlier this year, it was reported by Bloomberg that development on the project had slowed down, with many of its developers moving to other projects within the studio. Naughty Dog responded to that report in a statement online, saying it was "proud" of the work that had been done so far and confirmed the development of a new single-player game, too.

In October, we learned that Naughty Dog had laid off roughly two dozen contractors according to a Kotaku report. That same report said that The Last of Us multiplayer project was "basically on ice at this point." The game was once envisioned as one of several forthcoming multiplayer games from Sony, as the normally story-driven publisher seeks to compete in the busy live-service space. But just weeks ago, we learned that Sony had already greatly reduced its expected output in that arena, with the company cutting in half its number of in-development live-service games planned to debut in March 2026 or sooner.

It's unclear exactly which other games have been pushed out of that window or canceled outright, and it's quite likely some of them were never announced in the first place.

There's not a single downside to this news. The industry needs fewer MP games, fewer live service games, fewer anti-consumer games. The MP crowd of "gamers", aren't helping the hobby in any way, they're actively hurting it, they're the reason we have as many issues in the hobby as we do.

@restatbonfire: I have a friend exactly like that. Lol. He only buys one game a year, and it’s CoD. He’ll play that the entire year, and occasionally some free-to-play fishing game, but that’s literally it.

@robynsnest: Agreed! I like that Sony sticks with these SP narrative games. Leave this for us older mature gamers, who don't care about COD, Fortnite and all that junk anymore lol

I think the writing was on the wall all along: it had been delayed so many times and they laid off some people on top of that. They wouldn’t have enough resources. If they’re working on a brand-new IP, it would be better to give the TLOU franchise a break.

I think the idea of a MP game having to be live service or even AAA quality is just false. Some of the most popular games played today are ancient, ugly, and don't receive much new content other than cosmetics. Just make a game that's fun to play over time, with a full feature set and that's it. We don't need futuristic graphics and tech to like a game.

@noodles227: You are right, but in this case, the game needed to be good enough to make people wanted to buy a PS, we all knew that was wishful thinking. And the writing on the wall was set the moment bungie said the build and concept was not up to expectations.

@s1taz4a3l:

Actually the writing was on the wall before Bungie said errrr nope! Because ND have never made a good MP experience ever. They are trash at making MP games and their single player games are average and generic gameplay wise.Their games just don’t make good multiplayer games and the gameplay only just gets by in the campaigns. It’s just ok, average, serviceable to the story/narrative that’s it.

ND and their games are the most overrated in gaming!!

sony is a shambles right now and so is ND. I can honestly see playstation go 3rd party in the coming years like Sega did.

Oh, so I guess this was that "big news" that you planned on sharing with all us suckers this year about Factions MP, huh? Wouldn't want to pull any more resources away from bringing out remasters and remakes now, would we?

Been saying it for years. ND are THEE most overrated studio in gaming. TLOU & UC are two of the most overrated franchises ever! The gameplay is nothing special all. Generic, mediocre just serviceable to the narratives which ND seem to prioritize over gameplay smh!

What is going on over at ND and sony for that matter? It’s a complete shambles! The excuse given is complete BS too!

It’s looking real bleak over in the playstation nation right now.

@gamerbum:

The gameplay in the Uncharted games is there to service the story and keep it moving forward. There’s not really anything wrong with focusing on story in a single player game - if you want one where the bonkers story takes a backseat to the gameplay, I present to you Bayonetta (nothing wrong with that either, just saying.)

Personally love the UC games stories, but I’m also a sucker for pulp adventure.

Tastes my friend, just tastes. To me TLOU is by far one of the best franchises of all time. Probably, your favourite franchise may be nothing to me... like I said, tastes...

@gamerbum: the only person coming across as salty is you. Salty like the ocean. Calling people “kid” is red flag #1 that you’re an obnoxious human being with no respect and an ego problem, among other things. It makes you sound exactly like a… kid.

Yeah this was a bit of a cop-out announcement. The factions in TLoU was good. It didn't need a ton of content or continued content. We just wanted the same damn thing we had on TLoU remaster but updated visuals and controls to match the Remake. I really don't think it was asking for much other than new server support extended for a few years. They blew it up into this thing that needed to be massive. No one asked for that. Then they scrap it and everyone loses, especially the developers that worked on this for months hoping to see their work released to the public one day. Those are the people I feel for the most. The idiots calling the shots don't really care because they are more focused on what is next. They don't care about honoring the past or Factions. Oh well.... it's really not a huge deal to me... I would have liked to see it remade. But it's more of an annoyance than anything at this point. I'm not buying TLoU2 Remake because I feel like I just played it. I'm looking forward to their next titles though... They do amazing single player stories and for that they still have my respect. But I think some bad decisions have been made here... nothing crippling. But annoying all the same.

So Last of us 2 was coming and Neil druckman presented it as a game that will come with Factions (meaning the online MP piece as LOU 1 did).

Once the game came out, factions was not included and Neil Druckman said it was too big to put in one game and that it was coming spearately as promised.

Much later and after no updates Neil D said it was not free anymore but it was coming.

Then it got delayed aside of still not being free.

Then on ice.

After all of that they came out with a remastered version of LOU2 for PS5 and includes a No return mode (which is not for free)

Now Factions is officcially canceled.

I would have expected us getting no return for free at least. Specially after they broke their loyale customers what they promised lou2 was going to include (factions).

ND was the one and only company I respected 100%. Now I dont. not that this will change anything to them but i am sure a lot of ND fans feel disappointed

I don't care one bit ablut the canned multiplayer game. In fact I'm happy that they can now focus on single player games.

Just a question, wouldn't it always have meant that they would have to neglect SP games developing this crap anyway? Also a follow up, couldn't they just make a normal non-live service MP game to begin with?

You know the multiplayer shooter space is completely f'ed when a developer refuses to release a multiplayer because to them, a multiplayer is GaaS/Live Service, as if standard pvp is not a thing that has ever existed. They could've launched this like a standard multiplayer shooter released in 2011. Then release some dlc if needed. This is what triggers me most ever since GaaS titles became the standard in 2017.

@hardwenzen: I wholeheartedly agree. Not every multiplayer component needs to be live-service. Multiplayer is almost completely dead to me, with the way it currently is.

That said, I’m fine with them focusing on single player. Standard MP would have been nice, but I’d rather have more great single player games than mediocre multiplayer games.

I don't really have a horse in this race, but couldn't they have developed the base game and then given the reins to another studio to add content and skins, while they would have focused on more single-player games? I feel like something was potentially lost here.

Fans Few 12 months back:
"TLoUs2 Factions- Best thing ever coming"

Few months back after the announced delay:
"Yeah,take your time...just nail it please"

TLoUs2 Factions cancelled:
"That was the right thing to do,i dont like multiplayer anyway 😲👍"

Jokes aside, looks like Sony is reversing Jim Ryans plans heavily and that means many studios has to scrap all thing they had done and have to start new projects from scratch.
This throws Sony studios back.
I guess we will see even more remasters in the next 2-3 years.

Naughty Dog + TLoU going MP/live service felt wrong from the start.

However... I'm still disappointed Sony bagged it after wasting the time/money. Put out a simple competitive counter strike style MP mode for PS Plus or something. You never know what seemingly simple combinations could end up capturing the magic that SOCOM or Halo:CE or CS brought in.

I was excited for the multiplayer version, but I think this was the right decision. The Last of Us is first and foremost a single player experience, and Naughty Dog seems to thrive with single player games. I’m a bit biased, though, I’m not a fan of the Call of Dutys and Fortnites of the world, I’m not good at them and I usually end up getting yelled at by teammates.

@hardwenzen:

My thoughts exactly. Everything about the ps4 era was stellar, and seemed to show a company learning from the mistakes of the prior generation.

Then, the ps5 was unveiled, and all that they have done since has seemed like an identity crisis. Terrible storefront, one-and-done exclusives that are either too linear and cinematic, or too formulaic in the vein of Ubisoft. Worthless, overpriced peripherals, and my God that console design.

I dislike everything about this company, right now, though I’ve barely a kinder thing to say about the competition, either.
