The current state of FFXIV and Square Enix's plans for future Dragon Quest games

Square Enix says Final Fantasy XIV surpasses Final Fantasy XI, other online games are going F2P, and Dragon Quest is going mobile.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Square Enix's reboot of their MMO franchise, has already surpassed the company's previous entry in the series, Final Fantasy XI. With over 600,000 active subscribers, FFXIV has more active players than FFXI did at its peak.

This information came from Square's online financial results briefing, posted earlier today. In the document, Square also outlines their plans for other online games as well as the future of the Dragon Quest franchise.

For online-based titles, such as the in-development Nosgoth, the plan is to "transform the fixed-price model into variable earning models." In plain terms, that means shifting to free-to-play, although it's unclear if this initiative would affect the Final Fantasy MMO franchises.

Another slide in the document also clarifies that domestic studios (in Japan) will focus on "titles for smart devices" while overseas studios will shift to "production of online-based titles."

Included in those smart device titles will be sequels to games in the Dragon Quest series, Final Fantasy Agito, and "many other popular products." The document says Dragon Quest X, a currently Japan-only MMO, "will appear on the 'd-game' platform as a cloud game for smart devices." There are no specific plans laid out for Western releases.

<< LINK REMOVED >> While I won't say that the combat in FF11 was necessarily better than FF14, I'll definitely say that it was more rewarding and satisfying. I'm glad that FF14's combat has a faster pace but it also feels sort of thin and cheap compared to FF11's. I do prefer 14's world though.

I used to love the Dragon Warrior games. It would be great if they made a new single player Dragon Quest game on PS4 and PC. I'm not a big fan of the Final Fantasy games anymore. They seemed to be more like Dark Souls style graphics in idea (though not so good obviously as it was 2D).

I found A Realm Reborn to be an incredibly good MMO, albeit devoid of any real innovating features. Still, it's so amazingly executed that I can't fathom how the original FFXIV could be effed up so badly.

SquareEnix you suck. No Dragon Quest X for Western countries? That really sucks. I'm still playing DQ IV & V. I was hoping we would have DQX by now and now they aren't even bringing it to the states. They wonder why their Wii U sales are in the toilet.

Well it's not looking very good for us DQ gamers, like many others my favorite DQ game is #8 on the PS2. I didn't mine the DS releases but I have been really looking forward to another console DQ game. Sadly that's not going to happen, heck will be lucky if we get the DQ 7 3DS game at this rate. SE use to be the best, but now their looking very poor and irrelevant to many old customers. I want to be a fan again but it's just not going to happen with news like this.

It's just the "Warm, fuzzy feeling" of the 90's with Square, don't resonate with what they've released in the past few years. I've enjoyed what games they've released this gen, but it doesn't hold a candle to their classics from the Playstation 1.

Second, the only SQUARE / Squaresoft / Square EA / Square-Enix games that I bought and followed with a passion were DQ and FF until XIII. But what I meant by my comment was that CDPR's games give me the same warm, fuzzy feeling that SQUARE's games used to give.

As such, I expect to see a continued shift to F2P, microtransactions, non-gaming services, and a shift away from retail releases altogether to become the status quo.

I thought I'd be a gamer my whole life but...I really don't like where the industry is headed.
