The Callisto Protocol Isn't Removing Main Game Content For The Season Pass, Dev Promises

The game's director has clarified that extra death animations promised in the game's season pass have not been removed from the main game content.

The Callisto Protocol's director Glen Schofield has had to clarify some details about the game's season pass this week, after it was reported that some of the game's highly-anticipated gore would be paywalled from launch.

The misunderstanding likely comes from the game's listing on Steam, which offers a Digital Deluxe edition for $20 more than the standard game. The Digital Deluxe includes the game's season pass, which will consist of a skin collection, two new game modes, a story DLC, and a bonus of 13 new player death animations and 12 new enemy death animations.

Now Playing: The Callisto Protocol - Official Launch Trailer

With the season pass purchase available from launch, and the Steam description missing any kind of timeframe for the extra content's release, some outlets reported that 25 of the game's grisly death animations--which have made up a large part of the game's marketing--would be locked behind a paywall from launch.

While it's true that these animations will only be available to players who spend the extra money, which presumably will also be available later as a standalone add-on, Schofield took to Twitter to explain that this content hadn't even been developed yet. All the extra animations promised in the Contagion and Riot bundles will be bonus content available on top of the myriad grisly death scenes already in the game.

Schofield added that this extra content is being developed in response to fan feedback, with players asking for an even wider variety of death animations. In a response to a later tweet, Schofield added that "we put every freakin thing that was done in the shipping game." The Callisto Protocol is due to release on December 2 for PC, Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.

They are charging $70 for this game. I have no problem with it, video games are luxury toys. They have every right to remove content to put behind a paywall, that is their prerogative. It's not illegal, it's capitalism, it's free market.

So my reaction is to either wait for a very steep discount or buy it used. That's my prerogative and I encourage others to vote with their wallet instead of posting on a message board..

It really seems like people don’t understand that for a while now single players games with multiple planned dlc’s have been calling them season passes. It sounds like some of you think this is a fortnite style tiered thing….no. That’s not new regardless of how you feel about the content. People are acting like this shit is unheard of lol

@dts15: Nobody is acting like this "shit" is unheard of. They're just annoyed features that are normally common features are being cut out and sold back to us. There was a time when if a game introduced a new feature, you can expect that feature to be in the sequel, along with a host of improvements and new features. Nowadays sequels tend to have LESS features than the game that preceded it, but costs go up while quality keeps going down.

As someone said above, it's a free market, and part of that free market is the right to judge the value of a product as wanting. This is most certainly one of those times.

@Barighm: “ What season pass?? This game is offline single player. Not Fortnite.”

“ It matters how you sell things. Don't be the first to introduce single-player game season passes and expect the consumer to see you as anything but insanely greedy”

So nobody was saying this was unheard of? You keep saying stuff I never said. I said it’s nothing new, so people don’t act like it is. I also said I don’t endorse or like the practice. Simply that mo mater how you feel about it, it has existed for quite a while. It shitty and everyone can feel whatever way they want about it, again I hate it. But it’s nothing new which was my original point, everything else you brought up was not things I said. So take what I said, ask questions. And if you’re unsatisfied start telling me how I’m wrong.

The main problem is, you announced season pass way too early and should have not said anything until the game has been release few months after despite the deluxe edition already said season pass included.

That being said, I'm still looking forward to Callisto Protocol as I really love Dead Space games and wanted a successor to Dead Space for a long time. (Getting standard edition PC)

Yea it wasn't removed from the main game because it was likely planned to be paid extra content from the start. Was never in the game to begin with.

@noodles227: There's no way to know, but it really doesn't matter whether it was cut or planned. All that really matters is, 'Is The Callisto Protocol worth it's price tag without the season pass or not?' And we wont be able to make up our minds on that until the game's out.

@noodles227: Which means it COULD have been in the game from the start which is something you should be doing when introducing a new IP. Taking the kind of scuzzy steps you don't see devs do until well after an IP is established from day 1 suggests greed, and greed often goes hand in hand with cutting corners and releasing games broken from day 1.

@sebb: tai agree, but I’m not saying literally a thing about should or shouldn’t. It just a fact that it has and continues to often be bundled as a season pass if you buy them all at once. Even AC Valhalla a recent giant singly player game , has a season pass. Should was not what I brought up, the reality of what it is was my point lol

@dts15: yeah ok. Seems odd to me that they are using mmo terminology for single player games. I have Valhalla but never bought a season pass for it and have always seen and heard that content referred to as dlc on ign and in podcasts.

@sebb: ? It’s still called dlc, that literally just stands for downloadable content, back from when games were in the box. A BUNDLE of dlc is sometimes been called a season pass, so instead of buying the dlc individually you buy the package and get them all as they release. So you’re still right, it’s just that ya were a lil confused on what I was referring to.

@dts15: ah so a collection of DLCs is called a season pass. Did not know that. I only play single player games and have never bought a collection of DLCs. Only individual ones.

A season pass to me sounds like content you get access to for a period of time. Season pass.

Splitting hairs over some 5 second animations...might be a good idea to start with what the DLC is going to be.

I'm just not believing this, at all. They're receiving a lot of backlash on social media, so this is just damage control. Also, if they haven't even started working on the new death animations yet, why was it already specifically announced that 25 new animations would be added, (13 new Jacob deaths in the Contagion Bundle, and 12 new enemy deaths in the Riot Bundle)? Seems very specific for something they haven't even started working on yet. And now I have to pay more for hard mode? Nah, it's all very sus to me.

I don't think I'm even getting the game at this point, I just feel like something is off with the whole thing. I understand they don't want to spoil everything, but I swear they've shown like the same 9 or so minutes of gameplay for a while now, (unless I've missed some footage). And some of the gameplay looks pretty janky.

With Midnight Suns and Crisis Core remake in December, (and then Dead Space remake in January), I should be busy for a while. I'll get this further on down the road.

So what they are saying is they are selling content, not even made yet, before the game itself is released?

Uh huh.

So long as the base game is good on its own, I don’t care what else they sell.

@nilsdoen: Dude, the term season pass has been used as term for a package post launch dlc, many single players games have done it for a long time now. It’s not a tiered system to work through my man.

@dts15: Season passes didn't always work that way. If you were around when they were first introduced, you'd know gamers didn't like them very much.

@Barighm: I’m 30 lmao, I very much remember and I never said anything about anyone liking them. That’s a pretty obvious no. Just that they are absolutely not a new thing for single player games like many here are seemingly claiming. Or a Fortnite like pass others seem to think is going on. Free to play games have just made that phrase synonymous with their systems but that’s not the only definition. Simply pointing out that the people saying this has never been done and is an outlier in single player games is historically and currently not accurate.

@dts15: Gamers tend to have short memories. I imagine that so many service games regularly selling Season Passes that are predominately a rewards track to encourage grinding the game has created the mindset that that's the only thing they are/have been.

tomato tomatoe. its like when capcom fighters got flag for having characters locked on disc, they just removed them and started to say nooo we didnt even start on these characters before launch day. (but we had the the idea, the art, the mechanics ready because the character was released 2 weeks after launch, while now apex legends people say it takes a year to create a gun model...)
