The Bureau: XCOM Declassified DLC plans revealed

2K says it will support upcoming strategy game with multiple story-focused expansion packs; first DLC coming exclusively to Xbox 360.

After The Bureau: XCOM Declassified launches August 20, the game will live on through various story-driven expansion packs, 2K Games and 2K Marin announced today.

No Caption Provided

The first expansion will arrive exclusively for Xbox 360 players, though 2K said PC and PlayStation 3 gamers can also expect new content down the road.

"The alternate 1962 universe that we've created for The Bureau is vast and there are many more stories to tell about the early days of XCOM," development director Morgan Gray said in a statement.

In addition, 2K announced today that those who preorder The Bureau at participating retailers will score a bonus campaign side-mission titled Codebreakers. In this mission, players and their squad must travel to a "top secret government communications facility" to bring the center back online.

On top of the Codebreakers mission, gamers who preorder The Bureau at GameStop will get the Light Plasma Pistol for use in-game.

The Bureau is set in 1962 America at the end of the Cold War. John F. Kennedy is president and the U.S. public at large is afraid of a nuclear war with Russia. At the same time, the US government is establishing a secret organization to combat this threat. As it turns out, it's not the Russians who invade, it's the aliens.

Described as a third-person tactical squad-based combat game, The Bureau borrows from the praised XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Specifically, the new game will adopt the pillars of the strategy series--Team, Tactics, Tools, Technology, and Terror--and introduce them to players in a new way.

Does this game still has the Same-Sex and Civil-Rights sub-plot, which is supposed to take up 90% of the story? It had something about a Same-Sex a scientist saving the world.

***gamer.net: I commented that it sounded like XCOM was really more of a 60's period piece that happened to use aliens as a catalyst to bring out the social climate.
Jordan Thomas/ 2K Marin: "As a narrative guy, absolutely. To both mutate and express the inner conflicts of the period."

Morgan Gray to Electric Playground: "We are definitely going to be touching on everything that we can legally do . It’s such a specific year, it’s not arbitrary. There will be historical cameos, a lot of historical reference… "

I cant believe consumers are still dumb enough to believe that developers don't purposefully cut material from the core game in order to sell it as DLC later.

@Gargus What if it's a completely different main character and story? Those little preorder packs are BS, but with some DLC developers actually put a lot of effort in . . . it's just unfortunate everything downloadable is called DLC which has such a negative stigma associated.

Could just be planned DLC i.e. basic plot written?

Can companies PLEASE stop talking about DLC plans BEFORE a game is released???

I mean seriously, that alone gives gamers the impression that things are being left out of the original game so that they can be put into DLC. We KNOW you're doing it, but the LEAST you could do is not talk about it. It's bad enough that you're trying to screw us like that, but you don't have to hit us in the face with it after you're done...

@kungfuj0

Don't worry. They don't all do this, most of them start talking about DLC after a game has come out so you will actually believe they are adding to your game experience instead of holding back in order to sell it to you later.

Before a game release? After a game release? It doesn't matter, its all content they cut to sell you for extra money. The time they announce it doesn't change that fact.

I said it before and I'll say it again.

No point having the name 'X-COM' on a game that doesn't share the same gameplay or even time setting as a traditional X-COM game. Just call it The Bureau.

@jhcho2 But it is called The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. :S

It clearly points that it's a new game but still in the XCOM universe.

@glez13 @jhcho2

Why even have a game set in the same universe if it doesn't share the same setting? That's like making a Star Trek movie set in the middle ages and argue that it's the same 'earth' in other Star Trek movies, therefore deserving the name.

Waiting to see on this one... 2K Marin put out some seriously good stuff in the past, and we already got the true XCOM game.

Weren't they pre-order bonuses that boiled down to fetch quests. This is a PC franchise telling us the first 'post-launch' DLC isn't coming your way because business. And on a game nobody is even sure about yet.

Hey Gamespot, the Cold War didn't end in 1962 it ended when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. 1962 was the year of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

@DoctorTanaka It does say beforehand that it is set in an alternate universe so the alternate universe's history might now be the same as ours ;p

The first two sentences of paragraph six say "The Bureau is set in 1962 America at the end of the Cold War. John F. Kennedy is president and the U.S. public at large is afraid of a nuclear war with Russia." Those two sentence contradict each other.

It seems most people dont have any idea about making games. Now most of the game can be ready and you people think they just want to give them money doing nothing. The same people are making DLC to the game. Sure they could give the extra content free to every one. I think that game maker are greedy but I dont mind that. I cant understand why they are making exclusive content to some system and not other. This is insane.

3rd person cover based shooter with the XCOM tag smacked on the front.

And as if that wasn't unconvincing enough, upset everyone by announcing DLC pre-release.

It's up to us to make this sort of stuff fail.....so, let's !

"Multiple story-focused expansion packs..."

I guess I'll be waiting for the 'complete edition' then, assuming the game is any good.

You have an error in you article. The first sentence of the sixth paragraph says "The Bureau is set in 1962 America at the end of the Cold War." It should read "The Bureau is set in 1962 America at the height of the Cold War."

@CommodoreRaslin It's not just DLC, they never properly patched the damn thing. Teleport glitch makes Ironman mode frustrating to say the least.
