Game of Thrones has proved time and time again that Ramsey Bolton is a monster. He finally gets what he deserves this week in one of the most intense episodes of the show to date. Jon Snow meets Bolton the day before the battle, outside of Winterfell. Snow wants to fight Bolton one-on-one, since Bolton's army is massive compared to Snow's. Of course, Bolton scoffs at the idea.

The next day, the battle kicks off with Bolton's army staring down Snow's. Ramsey presents Rickon Stark, bound in rope. Bolton pulls out a knife and frees Stark. Next, Bolton tells Rickon to run to his brother for his freedom. It's not going to be that easy, and as Rickon runs towards freedom, Snow rides to meet his brother. While that happens, Bolton fires arrows at the young Stark, and hits him on the fourth try, just has Snow reaches him. Another Stark is dead.

The armies race towards each other, and Bolton, like the uncaring brute he is, has his archers fire into the battle, killing soldiers from both armies. Even with the Wildlings and their giant, Wun Weg Wun Dar Wun, it seems as though Bolton's army is just too powerful. Just when things are looking hopeless, Sansa and Littlefinger show up with the Knights of the Vale. Now that Snow's army has the upper-hand, he, Tormund Giantsbane, and Dar Wun race towards Winterfell as Bolton and a couple of guards retreat.

Dar Wun busts down the door, but he ends up getting shot down by all the archers. The giant is dead. However, the rest of the army quickly follows as Snow races towards Bolton, blocking arrows with a shield. Snow pummels Bolton but doesn't give-in to killing him, once he sees Sansa watching him. Bolton is sent to the kennels and Sansa watches him get devoured by his own dogs.

No Caption Provided

This was easily one of the most satisfying episodes of the series. It was intense and incredibly engaging as the battle raged on and gave the viewer moments where they truly thought the battle was lost. In the end, there was nothing more satisfying than seeing Ramsey Bolton get his face ripped off by one of his own dogs.

Where does the story go from here? Most likely, this will be the last we'll see of Snow and company for the season, as there is a lot to wrap up next week with the rest of the cast of characters. For the first time in years, there's a sigh of relief as Jon Snow's journey back to Winterfell has come to an end. He's changed greatly since he left Winterfell to go to the Night's Watch. Now, it feels like he's home, and there's some minor resemblance to normalcy. Sadly, both Rickon and Dar Wun died during the war. However, Bolton is gone, so we should all be cheering for that.

Here are some other notable moments.

  • Daenerys returns to Meereen, on dragon back. The Masters demand she surrender; however, Daenerys takes to the air, her two other dragons join her, and she burns the fleet bombarding the city. An army of Dothraki enters the city, killing off Sons of the Harpy, who are slaughtering Meereen citizens in the street.
  • Theon and Yara Greyjoy get to Meereen. They're giving Daenerys ships in order to help Yara claim ownership to the throne of the Iron Islands. Daenerys requests that the Iron Born change their ways in order to bring the world into a new era by becoming a bit more civilized. Yara reluctantly agrees.

I'm surprised in this discussion they think Ramsey missed all his shots, did you not hear him say he was playing a "game" if he had not built it up with john snow thinking he had saved his little brother, I don't think he would have made the mistake of rushing in alone. You can even tell at the end of Ramsey's spot on shots both on the giant and headshots at snow. smh

Maybe I'm the only one who thinks Davos had a pretty important moment? He's fast becoming my favourite character and I hope he gets vengeance for Shireen!

I have been waiting all season for Ramsay to get his... I damn near stood up and cheered when his own hounds ate him alive. I do agree with others though on the sudden appearance of the Vale, this seems like something Snow should have already known about, but they kept it a secret just for the sake of the deus ex machine moment. Seems like they did this intentionally just for the moment, unless Sansa didn't think they were showing up, which I seriously doubt.

Sansa worst person of all time. She knew that she had the Littlefinger and Knights of the Vale card in her back pocket but didn't tell Jon? Instead letting him go into battle anyway. Terrible person.

Not a lot of people will agree...but let's be honest.

George R R Martins absence in writing is finally showing. He was the master of tragedy...bearer of sadness.

This episode, although brilliantly shot with a high production value, was too Hollywood. Good guys saved the day, bad guys fell....we felt safe with the good guys....which is NOT Game of Thrones. It's a bunch of Hollywood writing

@beowulf1211: People have been saying that the absence in writing was felt even before he left, when some news outlets claimed it, even though he was still there doing it. It's just how the mindset works, if you think he's not there anymore you already start to find the differences and "feel the absence".

As for the "good guys saved the day" thing, the whole thing made sense. Sansa not telling anyone about the troops and surprising Ramsey with them was something extremely believable and obvious given how scared she was of him and how devious she believed he was.

Most likely this will be in the books too, while until now the Starks were hit from every direction, things have to start looking up for them at one point...

Lol. Way to be the sheep. Did u drool over the cooooool CGI and all the victories?

It's not GoT kid. This show gave us Blood Wedding, loss of Ned Stark, anti climatic end of Khal Drogo. This episode was just typical Hollywood writing, written by Hollywood writers...pleasing Sheeps like you.

Think outside the box for once in your life.

@beowulf1211: You do know that George R. R. Martin still advises on where the plot is going, right? The story has to come full circle at some point. The whole point of George R. R. Martin delivering all those tragedies and heart breaks earlier in the plot was so that those evil buggers who delivered those tragedies and heart breaks would have their comeuppance eventually and we'd feel all the more satisfied because of it.

@beowulf1211: It's the Red Wedding, not "Blood Wedding". If you are going to lecture, at least get the nicknames correct.

Cavalry riding in at the end to save the day was used twice in GRRM's books and the show. At the battle of blackwater bay and at the wall against Mance Rayder. This was just WAY better done than either of those two scenes.

The rest of your post is the typical preteen angst-ridden response. "My balls have dropped, I'm so frustrated and angry all the time, and I don't know why!!! *shakes little fists*"

Oh man the directing for this episode was absolutely stellar, both for the John Snow scenes and the Daenerys ones. Highly visible that HBO invested a lot of money into this. Nice.

Sansa is a bitch for letting 2000 of Jon's men die, because she didn't want to tell him about the secret army she had up her sleeve. Had she told him, he would have redrawn up new battle plans and waited for the cavalry to arrive before attacking and lost fewer men.

Her selfishness and secrecy cost a lot of good lives. She told him he can't attack without the numbers, yet refused to tell him how to get the numbers, or that she had them, or give him any alternatives.

People hated her for a long time for being weak and useless, and she's supposed to this season come into her own, but now I just end up hating her even more. Most of the wildling army are dead now, and Jon has about 400 men left out of the 2400 he started with.

Disappointingly for the episode there were no twists. Everything played out exactly as most people expected it to. This is unusual for GoT. It's getting predictable.

@lostn: What you said is true, except..well Jon attacked out of anger, prematurely. This wasn't the plan, and got them trapped. The idea was to wait for Ramsay's men to charge. Sansa warned him not to do what Ramsay wanted. So, it was actually Jon that screwed things up. Had they stuck to the plan, they likely could have held their line, losing only a fraction of their force, before the Vale army showed up.

You're right though that she should have told Jon about the Vale. On the other-hand, I kind of dig where they're taking Sansa's character now.

@Michael1571: He was never raised as a commander or leader. (He was only fighting at Winterfell because Sansa prodded him into it.) He was the bastard in the Stark family and was never going to be given such positions of power or leadership. Robb would have been groomed to be the heir, followed by Bran and then Rickon would be in line before he was.

The episode with Lady Mormont showed he was not a skilled negotiator either and lacked charisma. Again, he wasn't groomed for these things.

Fricken Sansa, when was she going to tell Jon Snow about the army of the Vale? Such a cliche ending to a battle sequence. When all hope is lost, a shining light...

@lostn: @Tangsta03 True, cheap cliche, but in this case it finally made sense. The cliche showed us that Snow is willing to die then and there solely to avenge his little brother. It's part of the character development it's not there just to f**k with us..

@livedreamplay: Not when previously there was an argument scene between Jon and Sansa about not having enough soldiers to fight when the entire time Sansa knew about a separate army that could've helped but neglected to tell Jon about it. Poor writing.

@Tangsta03: Snow charged on Ramsey with small army, only because Rickon died, if Snow have full army (with Vale army), he do the same, and probably lost all men in Ramsey trap. Sansa warned him, but she known, he do this.

@gerr: Snow charged in blindly but he gave no orders, it was Davos giving the orders. Given Snow was the tactical commander, it would've been prudent for Sansa to tell him, especially when Snow was desperate for more soldiers. He would've been able to devise a more sound strategy and even Ramsay would be forced to rethink his.

Im pretty sure everyone mourned the loss of the giant more than baby stark. Not to mention that was probably the least painful/sick way to die from the hands of Ramsey.

I really expected them to do something lame and keep Ramsey alive even though it was obvious he was in the dog kennel. So glad that the dogs were somehow just holding off the hunger for Sansa to get closure lol.

Someone please explain why the fk Rickon didn't zig-zag, jump, weave and roll like a mutha f¤#ker? I woulda made it IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to shoot an arrow at me. What a moron, running in a linear fashion at a constant speed. Deserved to die.

Also, why the hell did Sansa never tell John she sent a letter to Little Finger requesting support from The Vale? If she did, and they delayed their attack by a mere 2 or 3 hours, the entire battle would've been won with much less casualties. Pretty stupid. But the show has conceded many logical and sensical paths this season, including but not limited to, Arya's Wolverine-like healing abilities to jump from balconies and run through the city after being stabbed in the abdomen just a day or two before. I'm pretty sure Robb's wife died from lesser stab wounds, and she had a little baby in her stomach to cushion the blow. Didn't even mention that fact that Drogo died from a clean chest wound that became infected, whilst Arya dives into a city canal probably used for sewage disposable. Sepsis anyone?

@Zedeyeenn: I imagine it will be some more bad writing going on and it was her intentions to wipe out some of Jon's army/ensure that Ramsey stayed to fight since he would have just ran to Winterfell if the vale showed up with Jon's army intially.

Because somehow littlefinger turned her into a dark apprentience once she lied about her Aunt getting thrown out the sky window, and everything we have seen then was a act.

@xOmniCloudx: The giants seem pretty dumb. Remember when they stormed the wall and one died to 6 night watch in a enclosed place (everything is in the giants favor). I know there was one with a bow and arrow and they used that mammoth to help break the wall but they rely mostly on their brute strength, I mean hell even a medium tree as a weapon would help them in any fight instead of swatting, kicking, stepping on people.

Im pretty sure that brigade is limtied by budget since he should have easily be able to just plow through the 4-6 man thickness of that wall.

@soarlozer: I remember the Nights watch battle with the giant and it was actually in the watch's favor there as they had people with arrows and could have head sniped the giant as soon as he opened the gate but they didn't because it's GOT and people need to fulfil death quotas.

In any case, a giant losing to 6 guys in an enclosed space in a close range battle makes zero sense. Even with the senseless pick up people approach, what sense does it make to just pick up ONE guy when he could have picked up several at once and crushed them? Dragons eat through the CGI budget and that is most likely why they're so basic and why no ghost in this episode either.

Yeah Sansa bringing an army all the sudden and at the last minutes could sound lame but it could be assumed that she wasn't sure that she was able to gather that army or not so she didn't tell anyone!

however great episode.

@reza_razor: She should have told Jon about it and he could have thought of a better strategy and delay the attack. But nooo She wanted to be "little finger light" and withheld important battle information(even if she wasn't sure, that could have been good to know for Jon). I don't know if she did it to make herself look good next to Jon but that was a bitch move. A lot of the deaths on their side could have been probably prevented if that info was known.

@zerofrust: That is absolutely true. However, something to consider is that if Ramsay saw the cavalry and superior numbers against him, he would have holed up his forces inside Winterfell instead of fighting in the open, and then it would have been even more difficult. It would have been a long siege, and it would be a race to see who starves out first.

What they could maybe have done is have the cavalry hide at a distance just out of sight, so that Ramsay doesn't see them until he's committed his troops to the battlefield and it's too late to retreat.

@reza_razor: It's not smart to withhold that for ANY reason. A maybe is better than a no, especially in their situation. Morale and hope are insanely powerful tools in battle as opposed to all of them being sure they were going to die but going down fighting.

Yara and Daenerys interactions were gold. Rickon decides to run in a straight line which is senseless and Wun Wun has no armor or weapons and he doesn't just kick over the shield brigade or use one of the several ways only he could utilize to break the Winterfell gate without risking his death. Outside those things, major issue I have with the battle is the writers more or less telling us that Jon was clueless about stuff Ramsay would do through Sansa. However, Sansa complains yet waits until the last minute to give ANY insight on what he would do is also stupid. She's the most valuable person they have and had she gone to them sooner or them smartly going to her to get a read on him, things could have turned out a lot better.

Although, I think it's still obvious Jon's plans would have been greatly ruined by him running for Rickon and then having his own plan used on him. The stupidest thing though is yet again Sansa telling NO ONE that she could get a large amount help and also had already sent out for it at least a day or so before. They could have planned things VERY differently and saved many lives had they been aware of that help she got them. She was gone for what couldn't have been more than half a day after telling Jon, 'he knew nothing", about Ramsay so it's just especially dumb for her to not bring that up when it took no time at all to get the help they needed.

Other than that, spectacular episode and some of the finest moments of the show like most of the great battles the show had made. The ending was especially satisfying.

@xOmniCloudx: In reality, a running target from that range was going to be a dificult shot. It would take an expert marksman who understood physics, projectile motion, gravity, can estimate air resistance and factor in the winds, and can predict where Rickon will be when the arrow lands, not when he lets it loose. In a real life situation, I would have fancied Rickon's chances. In a real battle, it would take a hail of arrows if the target is a single man.

But that arrow landed just as Rickon was about to reach Jon's arms.

That is what you call a Hollywood arrow. There's no point discussing logic about it. It was scripted to land no matter what. Even if he zigzagged, Ramsay would have just outfoxed him. Even the first few arrows missing were part of the script to heighten the tension. If the audience sees that he can miss, they assume Rickon should be safe. It's only when there's one arrow left before he reaches safety that he can actually die. They chose to dangle hope like a carrot on a stick right in front of you, just out of reach, and then snatch it from you as you're about to reach it.

You have to admit, it was the predictable outcome also.

I feel Rickon's entire role was pretty pointless.
