The Batman's First Trailer Has A Crush On The Riddler

The first trailer for Matt Reeves' The Batman movie debuted at DC FanDome, showing a tormented young Batman and the villains that want him dead.

Well, this certainly isn't like any other live-action Batman movie we've seen. The first trailer for The Batman was revealed at the DC FanDome virtual convention, giving us a much better look at Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, as well as an idea of who the primary villain is.

We already know that Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell), and Riddler (Paul Dano) will figure into the movie. However, based on this first trailer, it looks like Riddler will be getting the most screentime of the three. In the two-minute clip, it's shown that Riddler is leaving a trail of bodies with notes and coded messages to Batman, indicating the villain is obsessed with him. The Riddler also seems to be painting Batman as a "liar" and seeking to expose him.

It's refreshing to see the trailer center so heavily on Riddler and that this portrayal is being taken in a much different direction than the only other big-screen Riddler fans have seen (Jim Carrey's in Batman Forever). This take on the character is dark, demented, and murderous. Dano is no stranger to this sort of role.

There's plenty else to see in the trailer, including a gang of thugs wearing facepaint that seem somewhat reminiscent of a certain Clown Prince of Crime, as well as several other characters you'll meet in the film. Of course, there's lots of Bruce Wayne brooding going on too, because what's a Batman movie without that? In face, Warner Bros. released a trio of stills pulled from the trailer that show Bruce off perfectly. We don't get too much of Wayne talking, however, save for one particular line delivered after brutally dispatching a criminal.

If you're excited about these, wait till you see what we have for you in #TheBatman panel at #DCFanDome starting at 5:30 PST. pic.twitter.com/hzSm4zV7i0

— Warner Bros. Pictures (@wbpictures) August 22, 2020

Director Matt Reeves also had plenty to say about what to expect the film. It's important to note this is not another Batman origin story. Instead, it finds him in his second year as the Dark Knight as the Riddler's murders are being carried out. Selina is not yet Catwoman in the film, and Cobblepot is not the criminal kingpin he will one day become--he also hates being called Penguin, which is a staple of the character.

Given that this is just the first look at The Batman, there will be plenty more for director Matt Reeves to share in the coming months--especially given that only 25-30% of the film has been shot so far. It's expected to resume shooting next month. It suffered a delay of a few months, as well, though its new date does fit the material.

The Batman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2021. For other news out of FanDome, take a look at our breakdown of the Zack Snyder's Justice League trailer, as well as a new look at Wonder Woman 1984.

Didn't use to think much of Pattinson, until I saw The Lighthouse and Good Time. Holy ?#!t he's an amazing actor. Good Time is a splendid movie, reaching levels of Sander's Uncut Gems marvel casting. I completely trust he can pull any character.

Hope the movie doesn't suck, but I'm happy Pattinson is in it.

I was only slightly following this, and I have to say the trailer looks great. I'll give Pattinson a chance. And I didn't know Jeffrey Wright was Gordon until now - awesome choice, I'll pretty much see anything he's in.

give the man a chance. forget the Twilight crap and check out his latest movies, he's a good actor.
I still remember when people were laughing at Ben Affleck announcement, and now he's the best Batman, maybe second after Keaton.

To me he looks like Dick Grayson taking up the mantle. He doesn't look like a Wayne.

@jcwainc: This is probably one of the biggest problems in our society today. There's a stunning number of people that want unhappiness for others...and are proud of it. When you step back and look at it, it's insane.

@jcwainc: Not liking something is one thing, but why would you actually want it to flop?

After the Nolan movies, there is no going back to the campy 'perfectly molded plastic batman' suits or a childish and colorful Tim Burton style setting. This new movie has gotten the look down right, the costumes are imperfect, everything has a rough and gritty look. The only thing these movies keep getting wrong is the PHYSICALITY of batman, he is not this skinny kid that beats up bad guys, he actually should look more like the Rock, but I get it, the more lean 'pretty boy' look for bruce wayne is what will sell more tickets. The only thing they can really improve upon from Nolan films is the fighting, and this movie seems to have some hope with that one scene in the trailer, overall it should be a decent outing.

@Henry518: True but not every character has to have a frequent fight with Superman LMAO, so in this case i would go with a bulkier image for batman, not to mention the fact that he has no powers so, the bigger the better i say.

Pattinson looks a bit short & slim for the role but Batman wasn't always huge in the comics. I haven't read any of the recent stuff though. I thought they made him too bulky in some of the more recent games.

Agreed about the shit fight scenes in the Nolan movies. Hopefully this one will be decent.

This will sound odd, but... It looks good, and I have no interest.
I suppose that means that it doesn't look like crap, the vibe, whatshisname as Batman, seems totally fine. I just don't care about the content, I suppose.

Also, very much a Spiderman syndrome, after so many reboots, it just doesn't matter anymore, even though I really like both of the characters.

Looks excellent. I’m betting Pattinson is going to crush the role. Overall, great look, great vibe and looks like a great approach to a Batman film.

I've always wanted to see Marilyn Manson take on the role as the Penguin. Wishful thinking. I know that will never happen.

It has a crush on The Riddler???? What on earth were you smoking when you came up with that title?

The trailer looks OK i guess, I'll judge after I have actually seen the movie (can't be as bad as Val Kilmer or George Clooney though).

And eight months later there will be a Flashpoint movie with both Keaton and Affleck playing Bruce Wayne. WB gives zero fooks at this point.

I don’t think Robert Pattinson was a good choice, but I do like the brutality of the character this time around. Overall, I’m pleasantly surprised by how good this movie looks.

Looks good to me. I really hated Affleck as Batman. He was so stupid. Batman is supposed to be like Sherlock Holmes in a cape. Affleck was angry, and nothing else. I like DIY look of the costumes and the Batmobile. Very grounded feel. It makes the Dark Knight trilogy (which I love) look like the Burton movies (which I also love) in terms of the more street level reality. I like the choice for Gordon too. That actor has the right touch. He’s got the humanity of Gordon and the authority of a police commissioner.

@DereksDontRun: Affleck's version seems to be inspired in The Dark Knight movies, so what Batman is "supposed" to be like depends highly on what the writers choose him to be.

@DereksDontRun: if you craved a sherlock holmes in a cape, dont look at the trailer or Robert Pattinson for your fix. Gonna have to wait till that trainwreck is done burning to see whatever they come up with next and hope/

Anybody can put on a Batman costume and learn fight choreography. That's the easy part. The hard part is creating a compelling Bruce Wayne/Batman dynamic which actors like Michael Keaton and Christian Bale only made look easy. It remains to be seen if Robert Pattinson has the acting chops to pull it off.

Thought Patterson was going to pull this off, some of his recent underground films are good, he looks good as a young batman, looking forward to this, from the few words he said he’s already miles better than Ben Afleck
