TGS '07: Sony's booth orbits around LittleBigPlanet

Game giant uses Metal Gear Solid 4 to demo new rumble-enabled controller alongside Guitar Hero III, Devil May Cry 4, FIFA 08, and Call of Duty 4.

One of the biggest booths at this year's Tokyo Game Show is Sony's. It's also one of the most crowded. Inside is a collection of first- and third-party titles for the PlayStation 3 and PSP--the PlayStation 2 is MIA.

The biggest titles on display are right up front. As soon as the doors opened there was a line for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which is playable in a cool setup with a racing seat, steering wheel, and pedals. Right next door is Metal Gear Solid 4.

Those aren't the only big games being shown. LittleBigPlanet is drawing huge crowds and lots of enthusiastic response from attendees. Sony's trying to spread the word about its innovative Eye of Judgment, which occupies a large portion of the booth. Because it's not really a "pick up and play" game, each player gets a personalized tutorial before sitting down to play. The other large areas belong to Lair, Heavenly Sword, and the new Ratchet and Clank.

And then things get crazy. Third-party titles like Guitar Hero III, Devil May Cry 4, FIFA 08, and Call of Duty 4, and games from Koei, Sega, and a host more dominate the back wall. This is also where PlayStation Store titles like Go! Sports Ski, echochrome, and Toy Home are playable. The PSP has a large presence on the far left of the booth. Minna No Golf 2 (Hot Shots), the quirky wardrobe organizer MyStylist, Talkman 2, Patapon, and the 1 Seg Tuner that lets you watch TV on your PSP each have their own kiosks.

Little Big Planet is Sony's best hope for success at this point. There are other good games coming but LBP is the only one that has me thinking "I can't WAIT for that to come out!"

I really think Sony will have a huge 08 and I don't take sides even though I have a PS3. To me, fanboyism is for dorks and I just call things how I see them. That being said, I just don't see MS or Nintendo really competing, next year, based on their exclusive lineups, especially Nintendo. I think Nintendo surprised everyone but the novelty will fade, if it has not, already. I just don't see many gamers older than 10-12 continuing to play the Wii as it is too much work to play a video game and many of us, like myself, will actually go and play a sport or something recreational if we wanted such workouts. When I wanna play a vid game, it's to relax, not work up a sweat, feel me? (no homo) Plus, the Wii is more like a side system for maturer people. MS just doesn't really have huge exclusives although they may carve a following with a couple of their exclusives. The PS3 is turning into the little engine that could, so to speak. It's gunna pickup steam and I believe that it already is. You may just see the 360 fanboys convert at the end of all this but, again, not a flamer so don't look at this as something putting other things down just to make something else look better. That's childish, to me.

Sony's has like all the best presentations at all the events: Game Developers Conference, E3, Leipzig, and now TGS. I think they have an INSANE games lineup for next year, so hopefully they can make some profits and recoup all their losses.

Doesn't take a genuis to say that 06 and 07 were not Sony's years. However I don't see much competition from either Nintendo or Microsoft when it comes to 08. So many great games that it hurts to wait any longer. At least I have the holiday linup to keep me occupied.

"Right next to that is a little game called Metal Gear Solid 4. It’s actually being used to demonstrate the new Dualshock 3." I guess it is using Touchsense if they're demonstrating it :D

Many exciting games, can't wait to play Gran Turismo Prologue which is free; glad to see LittleBigPlanet is so well liked. Of course Metal Gear Solid 4 with the rumble controller is awesome.
