Tenchu Could Get A Revival

The president of Acquire says he'd like to develop a new Tenchu game from the ground up for PS5--but there are no immediate plans to do it.

The stealth-action series Tenchu could get a revival. Acquire president Takuma Endo said the company is not planning a new game in the immediate future, but he would like to make a new one if the opportunity presents itself.

Gematsu reports that the Japanese magazine Famitsu features an interview with Endo, who said that the company registered the "Stealth Assassin" trademark in 2018 because it had expired. That trademark is said to lay the groundwork for a new Tenchu if the company chooses to pursue it, which he'd like to build from the ground up for the PlayStation 5 generation.

Elsewhere in the interview, Endo said he'd like to launch a new indies brand for smaller titles, distinct from the main Acquire brand. That could begin rolling out games by the end of 2021.

Tenchu began life on the original PlayStation, and continued for years after across multiple platforms. But it's been dormant for more than a decade now, its last release having been Tenchu: Shadow Assassins for Wii and PSP in 2009.

While it's been years since a new Tenchu game has released, fans have gravitated toward other period-appropriate games with stealth-action elements, like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Ghost of Tsushima, as spiritual successors. Sekiro was GameSpot's Game of the Year 2019, showing there's still a healthy appetite for the genre.

Didn't FROM buy up the Tenchu franchise? Sekiro was at first meant to be a Tenchu sequel as well. And this article only seems to confirm it, mentioning how Acquire has trademarked the title "Stealth Assassins" but not Tenchu.

I find it funny that they were making a Tenchu game and it became Sekiro instead. Let them do that again and see what great IP they come up with.

We kind of already got a "revival of Tenchu" in the way of Nioh/2 and Sekiro but personally I would love to see a full on reboot/remake/or next installment in the beloved Tenchu franchise.

I think the first sign that this may become a reality is if we see a Tenchu remastered collection or something. Many franchises that suddenly "come back" seem to follow the trend of testing the waters before diving head on in with a new release. I don't imagine Tenchu would be any different.

A made from the ground up version would be just what us ninjas have been asking for too.

@videogameninja: You've never played either of the Nioh games, have you? Tenchu are stealth games. It's not just about being set in Japan, and neither are you a Hollywood Action ninja in the Nioh games.

@Atzenkiller: The funny thing is I have beaten both, lol!

If anything a better question would have been "have you played Tenchu?"

It's been a long time but my memory is pretty hazy on the play style of that game to be honest.

However, with that being said my playthroughs of Nioh/2 were done in as much of a stealth manner as possible. This is mostly due to being a byproduct of my play style in most games regardless of genre; as long as a stealth alternative is available.

It's also how I have played the Souls games in the past. Perhaps Sekiro would have been a better example as the stealth mechanics were more easily utilized but for the most part in my Nioh runs I can't recall myself blindly running into encounters especially when you consider how easily enemies in that game (even low level.) can hand you a game over screen with a few swipes of their attacks.

Whatever the case a Tenchu revival would be great.
