Tecmo: Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 less gory

The latest installment in Team Ninja's hack-and-slash romp to be toned down for PS3 release.

When Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2's debut trailer appeared earlier this year at GDC, it left more than a few people scratching their heads. A PlayStation 3 redux of the Xbox 360's well-received Ninja Gaiden II, the video gave many the impression that Sigma 2 may feature toned down violence, rather than hardcore gore for which the series is known.

It appears that assumption is correct, according to Sigma 2's producer, Yosuke Hayashi. Hayashi, who was in London today at an event for the game, told journalists "When we developed Ninja Gaiden 2, we very much placed the emphasis on the violence. Since last year, the number of games featuring high levels of violence increased. So rather than do something the same as everyone else is doing, we decided to make it different." Despite this, GameSpot UK can confirm Sigma 2 will still contain blood, limb dismemberment, and decapitations, though the level of blood spatter is markedly less than in Ryu Hayabusa's last Xbox 360 outing.

In addition to less gore, the other major change this time around, according to Hayashi, is an improved camera system and adjustments to the level of difficulty--something else for which the series is known. Hayashi also played down any plans to support Sigma 2 with downloadable content, saying "We are not going to support downloadable content for the time being."

@daveg1 Seriously? The PS2 could have blood and gore all over the place....it's really not that hard. Maybe you should be looking at games for their gameplay, not for their graphics. I take it you only have a PC?

I've played Ninja Gaiden 2 a lot and the over the top gore is a big draw to be honest as the game itself isn't as good as the previous game on Xbox. Kinda pointless to go down the less gore route when this game needs all the help it can get. It's a decent game but it didn't need a remake, that should be reserved for classics.

Stupid reason, Hayashi. So if a bunch of other companies are making good games, I guess that means you should make a bad one just to be different, right? If you doing something just to be different, it's following the same concept as doing it because it's trendy: Either way, you're letting others make your decisions for you. The underlying ideal with this romantic notion of not being like everyone else is that you're supposed to create your project independent of what's going on with the rest of the community. Besides, honestly, it seems more and more games are actually getting less gory. Look at RE5 compared to the rest. MK vs DC. DMC4. We could go on and on. I was glad when Itegaki was out of the picture cause I thought it would mean someone with sense would be in charge. But I don't know now... I mean everything else about NGS2 is looking good. Playable Ayane is long over due, and Rachel should've been playable in NGB. Still not crazy about this lame decision and reasoning. Sure it doesn't impact gameplay, but it does technically detract from the overall entertainment value. Really, it's not even the decision to lower the gore that's irking me, but just the reasoning. Oh well. I'm still gonna love NGS2. If I can get a PS3 by then...

I agree with the other readers' take that their (Hayashi's) presented logic for toning down the gore in Sigma 2 is idiotic but I applaud the decision to move away from $ DLC. The costs for 95% of PS3 DLC are hard if not impossible to justify. Also, what's with the female-only playable characters in CO-OP? Pretty unacceptable.

@Stringerboy Not really. The gore and dismemberment is just eye candy... its not essential to gameplay in the way that (really only) Dead Space is. With the sharper graphics, exclusive content, new characters and co-op, I can put up with less blood. That is to say, in exchange for losing something that has no effect on gameplay whatsoever, I'm more than willing to have all the aforementioned enhancements that DO.

Well, I have the 360 version, and can say that the gore is indeed through the roof, but it's more ocmical than anything else. The pools of blood, to me, are so outrageous, I actually don't consider it gory; just a funny design decision. If the PS3 version is only losing some of the blood splatter, and none of the limb chopping, I think this won't matter to most people.

"i have the 360 version great game but the fanboys of ps 3 probably won't get it though because it was on 360 first " Great logic there, great logic. It's crazy you even managed to think that up.

Just as long as the gameplay is solid, I have no problem with that. I also hope the difficulty is accessible, because when my friend let me play Ninja Gaiden 2, it was real hard for me to get used to.

As long as the dismemberment is still there, the toned down blood splatter shouldn't make TOO much difference. I was concerned before that it would be completely neutered.

I could not care less about the gore, this game is about rock solid and fast action, it is going to rock either way. Plus I'm glad they spend extra time fine tuning the camera and the difficulty level, plus 3 added female characters story modes to play with and co-op. This is how all ports should be treated.

Toning down gore doesn't concern me. It is removing it altogether (like in the UK version of No More Heroes) that does!

Them adding a co-op mode is really good news and the less blood thing doesn't concern me too much. The game is just way too fast to stand there and appreciate the blood splatter anyways, imo.

I did like the Ninja Gaiden game from Xbox to PS3, 360 and DS. NG2 was 1 of my top games of last year and with this PS3 verson I'll be looking forward to it soon. The online Co-Op is what shines my intrest.

For me Ninja Gaiden Sigma was NOT better than NG2, especially the game play in NG2 was far better, I don't see why some people like to compare those games that much, since it's just another version of the first Ninja Gaiden. I agree, all the blood effects are just aesthetic and do not affect the way the game plays, but those visual details were impressive in the original version of NG2. Yeah, I'm glad they included all those new features to an already fantastic game, but I don't see why to tone down violence, the game will be M for Mature anyway. If Mr. Hayashi is the person who is substituting Tomonobu Itagaki as leader of Team Ninja, I'm truly afraid of what this guy would do to the DOA franchise to "improve" it.

i'm kinda dissapointed, i'm still getting the game but i don't think i'll feel as happy getting it with that info also when the number of violent games increase its an indication of how popular that it. toning down violence is sorta like going backwards and removing what pleases the fans the most i wouldn't call myself an NG fan, i only started playing it, but even i'm disappointed by this. imagine what the hardcore fans of the game would feel like...

I'm also a huge fan of the NG series, from back in the days of the NG Arcade and Tecmo's Original Nintendo Releases. Having said that, unlike a lot of others it seems, the toning down of violence doesn't bother me so much. I think it's important to note that the major thing being toned down is the blood spray and spatter. As was mentioned it will "still contain blood, limb dismemberment, and decapitations, though the level of blood spatter is markedly less." No mention of limb dismemberment being less. It's my opinion that the blood can serve to enhance but in excess also serves to distract from other highlights like the graphics, story, scenery and cinematic quality. Case in point being any hack n' slash horror movies. Obviously this is completely a personal preference, but I find these movies laughable for their implausibility and not in the least entertaining. Another example of overdone blood that comes to mind is the final fight scene in V for Vendetta. All I can remember from my first time watching it was thinking, "yeah, the fighting's kinda cool, but I can't get past how distracting the overabundance of blood is." (Before any purists jump down my throat, yes I know that the style in which V4V was created was intended to be a graphic novel style, but my point remains strong). Sorry for the novella, but I thought I'd put my 2¢ in.

I really don't see the point in toning down the violence level. The blood and gore is what made the game stand out from others, no other game was as violent as NG2. As an NG fan I'm disappointed, I hope they don't make the difficulty easy like they did the previous NGS game. This game is for a mature audience but they seem to keep babying us with these PS3 ports. I figured giving the game to PS3 could perhaps IMPROVE it in various area's but it appears they are taking away more than what they are giving, no DLC? I assume they'll provide all DLC the 360 version got up front then. I would pray they aren't ruling out the possibility of DLC entirely, why pass up the chance to expand the game??? This sucks as an NG fan I would get it if I had a Station 3 but with all the disappointing news, if I did have a PS3 and got it it would have to be for collectors purposes and nothing else. The array of new features barely offsets their toning down of blood and possibly difficulty. I see no legit reason for this.

Yes. I like the blood and gore of Ninja Giaden 2. but remember, Ninja Gaiden Black/Sigma did not have blood and gore, it did not make them less enjoyable, in fact, NG Black/Sigma is better than NG2. NG2 has frame rate issues, glitches, sub-HD graphics, 'cheap' AI, etc maybe the blood and gore were the reasons for this technical issues. and if toning it down will fix these issues, then so be it. smooth gameplay > blood and gore. also, more content such as, more characters, co-op, new weapons, new bosses, etc is a good substitute for blood and gore. dont get me wrong, I love NG's blood and gore, it really gives it, its unique look, but it is otiose.

Um... darn? I can't say not having Monty Python-esque fountains of blood really concerns me, but the title is almost entirely incorrect for this article. Less blood doesn't mean the guy's head is coming off any more pleasantly nor are any ultra-violent moves being removed. And let's not forget (though Gamespot seems to have) that there we will have two extra hotties to play as among other improvements. This was actually all covered on PlayStation.blog, but with a far less negative slant.
