Tango Gameworks Saved By PUBG Publisher Krafton, Hi-Fi Rush Rights Also Acquired

The PUBG publisher has rescued the tenured studio from Microsoft's axe.

Tango Gameworks was closed by Microsoft in May, and many lamented the loss of a studio that had operated for nearly 15 years and produced games like surprise 2023 hit Hi-Fi Rush. Seoul-based publisher Krafton Inc. has saved the day, however, as the firm announced that it has acquired both Tango Gameworks and the Hi-Fi Rush IP from Microsoft.

The agreement will allow Tango to "continue developing the Hi-Fi-Rush IP and explore future projects" according to Krafton's official announcement of the move. The statement also confirms that there will be "no impact" on other Tango projects like The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo, which will remain with Microsoft.

We bet there will be a lot of fistbumps at Tango when they get back into the office.
We bet there will be a lot of fistbumps at Tango when they get back into the office.

Krafton announced the acquisition Monday morning in Seoul--Sunday evening for North America--and said that the move "reinforces Krafton’s dedication to expanding its global footprint and enhancing its portfolio with innovative and high-quality content." Speaking with Windows Central, a Microsoft spokesperson said that the company is "working with Krafton to enable the team at Tango Gameworks to continue to build games together and we look forward to playing their next great game."

Tango Gameworks was one of four studios shut down by Microsoft back in May, with the other three being Alpha Dog Games, Roundhouse Games, and Arkane Austin. At the time, Microsoft said in a company-wide email that the closures were "tough decisions to create capacity to increase investment in other parts of our portfolio and focus on our priority games."

Hi-Fi Rush originally launched in January 2023 for Xbox and PC as a surprise release after the Xbox and Bethesda Developer Direct. The game was then released on PlayStation 5 earlier this year, along with other Microsoft-Studios-developed games like Pentiment, Grounded, and Sea Of Thieves.

@RSM-HQ: They don't have the rights so probably not. Evil Within 2 was already too americanized so if there is 3 it would be even worse.

@neometal89: 2 was significantly better than 1. So, 3 would likely be even better.

@neometal89: Resident Evil is also Americanized so I don't see your point. TEW is a spiritual successor to that series at the time when the Resi series saw a decline.

& nah, TEW2 was dope and majority Survival Horror fans I know think it's dope too. God Mode is also unlocked for beating the game on Classic Mode which is a challenge in-on-itself.

@RSM-HQ: No lol, the cheats are unlocked when you create bethesda account. You can beat classic with the cheats. And yeah modern resident evil is also americanized, that's why it's so safe and sterile.

@neometal89: I have 100% achievements for both The Evil Within games and not aware of this. Looking into to it those cheats, they came with the Gamepass edition, & the accont cheats have restrictions. Have not tested what those restrictions are. With how infamous TEW is known for difficulty-wise I can see why Microsoft pressured this feature for TEW games.

"safe and sterile" Don't you play Fifa and give them 10/10's???

Overall to each your own. majority agree recent wave of Resident Evil games is the best the series has been in a very long-time; with Capcom as a company being the best its been in decades.

Lastly all Resident Evil is "Americanized" it's the point of the setting across the entire series, not just modern entries..

@RSM-HQ: I don't play fifa but whatever you say. The cheats are in the game long before bethesda was bought by microsoft. And crapcom are the best in their modern audience imposed censorship. Check out the article of the soon releasing modern audience remaster of Dead Rising with the turned off comment section by gamespot.

@neometal89:

"I don't play fifa but whatever you say"

Why lie!

You know anyone has the ability to click on your User and see the games you rate right?

Fifa, NBA2K, Lego LotR, Quake 4, The Battle for Middle-Earth. These are games you rate highly. Whether you still think they are 10/10's or not is irrelevant. This is a basis on the taste from a person who is calling modern Capcom games & TEW2 (both exceedingly well regarded) "crap"

& on that note "Crapcom" meme (in 2024)... Anyone can see your whole tell.

@MigGui: I'm saying it's worse than the first because it's way more simplified and less scary especially with the more open world areas.

@neometal89: TEW2 isn't open world what-so ever.

It has two open ended zones similar to the Silent Hill series, & TEW2 makes it clear to be paying respect to that franchise. SH are also not open world.

Grand Theft Auto and The Elder Scrolls are open world games.

It's odd when a bad developer saves a good developer because the bad developer has a lot more money.

The rhythm based combat of HiFi Rush didn't do it for me, but I did like the charm and vibe of the game. I am not really interested in more from that franchise, but Tango is a talented developer. I hope they create some cool new IPs.

It's a shame they can't have another stab at Ghostwire. I really liked a lot of it and a sequel could have smoothed off the rough edges.

@stickemup: brilliant is right. The Tokyo design is literally singular. No game so far has created such an atmospheric, colourful, tonal rendition of modern Tokyo. And the gameplay was a very refreshing take on first person action. The mythos and world building had a really great set up and was filled with potential. And the character and enemy designs were gorgeous.

Does that mean there wasn’t room for improvement? No. There was. The gameplay, its locations and its quests lacked variety. That could have all been built on in its sequel.

Microsoft is so stupid. I'm just trying to figure out why every time they build momentum, they completely drop the bomb on not just their developers but their customers (me). I stayed loyal because of the backwards comp and the ability to boost performance with series X installs but I'm getting over it.

Not much reason for consoles anymore unless you are really hung up over console timed exclusives which seems to be coming to pass.

Steam for life.

@vgmkyle: With these closures it was because of the $70 billion purchase of Activision-Blizzard.

It made it so Xbox isn't just a rounding error on Microsoft's books anymore and there's suddenly a mandate from Upper Microsoft for Xbox to quickly increase profits at all costs. Costs like sacrificing smaller lesser-known IPs because CoD is assumed to make up for it I guess

@vgmkyle: Microsoft has done this my whole life lol they're not QUITE as bad as EA, but sometimes they seem to read from the same playbook.

Cool IP generating developer out there? Acquire them. Force them to make a crappy entry in that IP that's rushed and half-baked... Close the developer sell off the assets. IP goes dormant.

@erustenebrus: I would argue that they're worse than EA. Mostly because MS has the money to support them and keep them in business. What with their billions and their massive Rep they could springboard off of.

EA doesn't have nearly as much assets as MS. So EA dropping an IPs makes sense. But MS? They literally buy out companies for billions on the regular. I think they can shovel a few million to support an IP and give it the platform it needs to grow.

bungie to. they let them go during 360. xbox 360 thought they could be third party and beat sony. they let there developers go one by one. from mass effect and more.

@gifford38: that’s definitely not an example of what they said. Microsoft didn’t close Bungie down, it spun it off. And they never owned BioWare, they just had exclusive rights to Mass Effect, KOTOR and Jade Empire. Neither Halo nor ME went dormant after interacting with Microsoft

@MigGui: microsoft dured bungie down for another contract. mass effect 2 was also offered to micro and turned them down to. they got cocky just like sony did with ps3. they thought they was going to beat sony so they just stopped paying for exclusives. thats what im trying to say and let sony pull ahead of the 360 the last year of the ps3. thanks to last of us and few others.
