Switch 2 Will Play Switch 1 Games, Nintendo Confirms

It's unclear yet how the Switch successor will approach backward compatibility, but Nintendo is promising details at a later date on this feature.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that the Switch successor will be backward compatible with the original Switch console "software" and the Switch Online service, and he added that specific details will be revealed at a later date.

"At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch," Furukawa wrote on X. "Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date."

This has been something that Nintendo briefly touched on last year, as Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser added that a single unified "Nintendo Account" will smooth the transition into the next console. The Switch hasn't featured traditional backward compatibility since it launched, as it shifted from the disc format of the Wii and Wii U consoles back to cartridges. It's not clear yet if the Switch 2 will have a dedicated cartridge port for original Switch games, or if it'll implement a similar backward compatibility approach toward downloads of digitally purchased games like on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.

As it enters its eighth year, sales of the Switch have begun slowing down and an official announcement on it is expected within the next five months. 140 million systems and more than 1 billion Switch games have been sold so far, and Nintendo said in its latest earnings result that hardware sales continue to remain stable. Nintendo stock has also been on the rebound--shares fell yesterday after Nintendo revised its sales forecast and confirmed that Switch sales were starting to slow down--increasing by 5.8% on November 6.

As for when exactly the Switch 2 will be revealed, analysts predict that it won't be this year as Nintendo wants to avoid diverting attention from its current system before it heads into the lucrative holiday season.

As someone who bypassed the switch this generation but often looked at the games and thought I'd like to play them, this is the kind of thing that will lure me into buying a Switch 2.

So it's a good move

Do you need to buy original Switch Joy Cons for games like Labo on Switch 2, or will the Switch 2 controllers work?

Just wait for the caveat that b/c is only supported for games purchased via the digital marketplace...

I guess in addition to what the quoted guy says about Switch 2 not being experimental..adding backwards compability also increases the chances of people staying with Switch and Nintendo for the next generation .... even though Steam Deck is here, GTA VI is soon here and might not work on Switch 2 and Switch 2 probably does not have any title as huge as Zelda BotW to generate the initial sales. But it could have games like Pikmin 5, another Mario Kart, another Smash Bros and a new 3D Mario game. And splatoon 4. Metroid Prime 4 might be a game for two generations of consoles.

i wonder if switch accessories works on switch 2. Joycons, gamepads, nitro deck and so on..

I think they might release two versions of Switch 2. One which is digital only... and one with a cartridge port or two cartridge ports (like DS which had two ports, one for GBA games and one for DS carts).

They might even go back to a disc format like PSP. The problem with PSP was all the sounds from the disc reader. Since Sony did not use discs on PSP 2 maybe the chance Nintendo would is quite small. But a bluray mini disc reader might be able to store more info than a cartridge .. for cheaper.

But Switch 2 probably has cartridges. Discs seem less likely.

Since it is for kids and families a lot i think they might stick to cartridges and might not go digital only. Like Steam Deck does.

Definitely getting one now. I think a big reason why the PSVR 2 wasn't successful was because it wasn't backwards compatible. If it was I would have got one instead of upgrading my Quest 2 to Quest 3. I still have about 50 OG PSVR games that are basically useless to me now.

@leon1978: I think PSVR2 is unsuccessful mainly because it has a very high price and because Vr is not the big next thing some people thought or wanted it to be.

@leon1978: The PSVR 2 couldn’t be backwards compatible. Lol. It’s an entirely different headset, technology wise, and the games need to be built around it.

@fdlewisii: How about if you are only able to play your old games offline without Switch Online. .? Oh wait, it is already a thing.

Who expected otherwise? Every video game console they release as 2 partners in a row that has very similar name always has such a relationship. That's why buying the 1st partner is nonsense for 2nd partner will be the best version ever while people are being a willing playtesters who give lots of money to be a tester for the 1st version of the pretty much same console. :DDD

However Switch doesn't have a video game library enough for me to buy, Switch 2 will be no different for lack of technical capability prevents Nintendo from keeping up with current technologies enough to keep up with PC but fundamentally this generation sucks hard and don't tell me Zelda and Animal Crossing is a good game lol. All the Nintendo games I care about can be playable on my Wii U + I don't think Nintendo would care to release most of good Wii U games on Switch, rest of the games like Zelda has better PC version called Craftopia. As for Animal Crossing, any mental hospital will be a better experience instead, especially hanging out with crazy people who believe they are not human but some another human and they talk a lot with weird voices. :DDD

Kudos on Gamespot for not using this article to talk about US politics like other outlets did

It’s funny to me how Phil Spencer has convinced himself ‘making great games’ won’t save Xbox, but then you read articles like this about Nintendo and how well they’ve done with just a tablet. The success of Nintendo switch is absolute proof that gamers will buy a console to play great games. Who woulda thunk!

@dominicwow: Great games could save the Xbox but it might be hard to get close to playstation again since playstation is in the lead and all the multiplayer games are available on playstation and are not xbox exclusives.

And also because a lot of people bought ps4 and now they have a big game library and want to stick with ps5 to play their older games.
