Switch 2 "Reviews" Are Overwhelmingly Negative So Far At One Store

Shoppers are expressing their anger and frustration about not being able to get a Switch 2.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launches in June, but preorders in the US began today, April 24. Official reviews for the system are expected later, but for now, user reviews at one retailer are available--and they're overwhelmingly negative.

Reviews for the standard Switch 2 console at Target are currently hovering at just above 2/5 stars, with more than 400 people weighing in. Of course, no one actually has a Switch 2 yet, so the reviews are instead focused on the messy preorder experience and other factors.

People are using the review page to express their frustration and disappointment about the preordering experience, which left many people unable to secure a console. Some people claim Target's website and order process was anything but smooth.

To be fair, plenty of other retailer websites had issues, too, presumably due to overwhelming demand. But because Target has user reviews available, people are taking every opportunity to share their thoughts. Why Target would even allow reviews for a product that hasn't been released is unclear.

Extremely high demand for the Switch 2 was always expected, but many were hoping for a smoother experience in terms of reserving a system. The first wave of US allocation is sold out, but Nintendo is expected to--at some point--have more units available to preorder.

If you really can't wait, you can take your chances on the secondhand market with sites like eBay, but you should be very careful and expect to pay a premium.

Preorders were originally scheduled for earlier this month, but were delayed for the US as Nintendo had to assess the impact of Trump's tariffs. There was also some initial concern that the price would change for the console, but only some Switch 2 accessories' prices were raised.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5. Launch titles for Nintendo's latest console include Mario Kart World, enhanced versions of The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and Tears Of The Kingdom, Street Fighter 6, and Cyberpunk 2077.

(on the headline itself). So far? At one store? HA!

Actually, the Switch 2 itself is priced pretty much where I guessed.

But the games & accessories? Game key cards?

I'll tell you what: I'll go & buy a spare Switch 1 & ignore the Switch 2.

The Switch 2 is bad, because you can't get one easily at launch?

So months ago we went from, "The price is too high, no one will buy this..." to now "We want it!!!" The only winners here are Nintendo. Reviewers come off as whiny entitled kids. This is always the case with new launches. There's never enough to satisfy everyone and the pre-ordering will always have problems.

But no one complained about the system cost, so your point is irrelevant. Everyone complained about the game pricing. And let’s keep in mind. The system can still play the older games. But it’s a bigger screen and a better resolution even if you’re just gonna do that

@KingWormer: People were complaining about the cost of the system as well. But even if they were complaining about game prices, unless they are just buying the system to look at it, they will be shelling out for those games they were complaining about.

These websites need to more heavily regulate their reviews. If people have not purchased the product, they should not be allowed to review it. Makes perfect sense.

@feral411: Exactly, those that did not plan ahead to pre-order in the agreed to time frame should not be leaving negative reviews regarding the product that they have never seen..

On another note, great job to all those who got up late and obtained their pre-orders of the Nintendo Switch 2, You are about to have an awesome time with your amazing new consoles!!!

LOL. Nobody throws a tantrum like the gaming community. You could visit every pre-school and daycare in the country and not find a single toddler who can match the tantrum output of an allegedly adult gamer.

The only thing game reviews measure at this point is the current need/demand for therapists.

@esqueejy: Furthermore, I think many in the community conveniently ignore the past and how producing too much of a product has at times, not been a success. Clearly Nintendo produced a great deal of product for this launch. I'm getting a kick out of people who have worked in the industry, in some capacity, complaining that preordering was too difficult. Welcome to what we have to deal in hobbies with VHTF and in demand items.

@Solaryellow: Totally. The Kotakus of the world acting like the sky is falling over this is hilarious. This is how it goes. Online preordering was expectedly horrible. I went to a GameStop and preordered one, no problem. The fact that preordering online was a bad experience doesn't indicate anything in terms of stock, I think. I actually think Nintendo did meet, or at least came close to meeting demand.

@unclejohn0525: It's not just "the Kotakus of the world" (and all the known connotations certain folks intend that reference to convey at this point). Plenty of the usual suspects on the other side of that imaginary fence were tossing tanties too.

@esqueejy: Unfortunately it's true, especially in the current environment. You don't wanna buy a game because you have no interest in it, you're automatically anti-woke if it has DEI&B content. But if you have interest in that same game and buy it, then the anti-woke community gets mad at you. It's a complete cluster-**** now sadly. I miss back when a game could release and no one complained, people were just happy.

@princemagnus0: Nope. Nobody's fooled by these silly attempts to turn everything upside-down inside out and backwards. Nobody is attacking anyone for simply not being interested in a game.

Pro Tip: If you have NO INTEREST in a game, loudly proclaiming it everywhere you can on social media and arguing and fighting with people to try to convince them not to like it or to put aside any interest they have in it is a MENTALLY ILL WAY OF SHOWING YOU HAVE NO INTEREST IN IT.

@esqueejy: I do have interest in it, I'm just not saying whether I'll buy a game / product or not. ^_^ I do hope the Oblivion Remaster does well honestly, not that this article is about that just an example.

Don't be mad at the retailer, be mad at the company that produces the product there isn't enough of. If there was a massive stock everyone wouldn't need to fight over the 'scraps' to even be bothered by this pre-order hullabaloo.

Plus, considering Nintendo hasn't addressed, or at least I haven't seen they've addressed the stick drift from the Switch for the Switch 2, you might be better off waiting in general until enough units are in the wild long enough to know if that or any other issues are pervasive.

@julianwhatthe: Haven't they made like millions of them? Also this always happens with big console launches, regardless of supply. And had Nintendo held off longer to make more, well, people were already b****ing about how long the next console was taking, so they would still have caught s***.

I might buy a Switch 2 in a few years (depending) but if the game is not on the cart, I will not buy that game.

PERIOD.

As someone who often still plays my 3DS/DS and all my old Nintendo consoles, this WILL directly affect me when they shut the servers down in 10 years or so.

I am planning on leaving my game collection to my daughter someday so I have a vested interest in those games being playable. Whether she keeps them to play or sells them is up to her but they will be hers to decide what to do with, not Nintendo's decision.

People need to grow some balls and speak with their wallets. I hear so much of "well this sucks but I'll give them money anyway". Look what happened with Alan Wake 2. People protested the no physical copy and sales tanked. What did Remedy do? They came out with a physical copy to appease a portion of people that refused to buy the product.

If you say you don't support a behavior, you can't turn around and just say "well I'm going to support it anyway and hope the giant money making corporation will just do the right thing"

Nintendo offers (from what I know) 8GB - 64GB on the new S2 carts to third party game publishers. They might even have a 128GB card (unconfirmed).

A 64gb high speed SD card can be gotten for $10 these days on Amazon. Nintendo's carts are probably cheaper. They are probably charging $2-3 bucks for a 64GB card wholesale.

Many of these third party games can fit on a 64gb card. But you are seeing these games announced as download keys on 8GB carts with Switch 2...and they will be $80-$90 !

Bravely Default literally says the cart requires a full game download of "11GB".....11 GB !!!! They couldn't be bothered to fit that on a cart.

Street Fighter 6 requires a full game download of "50GB" ?!?!? ...why can't that fit on the 64GB cart ? Cyberpunk 2077 will apparently be on the cart and be upwards of 60GB so we know it can be done!

Elden ring PS4 version is 45GB on disc....yet this is this a Game Key Card on Switch 2. Why is FromSoft and Nintendo requiring a download of the full game?

Why?...That is the question you should ask yourself and you know the answer already.

Imagine review bombing and item that isn't even out yet BECAUSE you can't get it easy.

Reviews don't actually mean anything anymore. Just a place for people to do their "L+Ratio+fell off".

These are people who are going to still buy it.

How is this Nintendo fault? Reviews should be on the hardware and their service if you want to rage do it at the customer service of the companies you bought it from.

@chiyochan111: it's also Nintendo's fault. They first started with this strategy of only selling consoles to those who got their not-so-appealing online subscription (at least 2 years), and even after that you couldn't purchase one from the Nintendo Store. They could've avoided it, and they claimed it wouldn't be a problem (but it clearly is).
