Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition Hands-On

Capcom's fighter is heading to Nintendo's handheld with new 3DS-specific features.

The 3DS's button layout isn't exactly ideal the Street Fighter six-button control scheme. Sure, you can get by with four face buttons and the two shoulder buttons on the 3DS if you're so inclined, but it can be a bit of a struggle to execute the moves as proficiently as you would with a stick or fight pad. Therefore, Capcom is introducing a few different control options that should not only appease Street Fighter vets, but also make the Street Fighter experience a bit more accessible to those previously intimidated by its control scheme.

For starters, there are two different control schemes to choose from--light and pro. The difference between these two setups is based around what you can map to individual buttons. In light mode, you can map both controller movement and button presses, so in theory, you could map a dragon punch or a fireball to a single button. Conversely, pro mode only lets you map multiple buttons to a single button, so an example would be mapping all three punch buttons to the Y button on the 3DS. If that isn't enough, you'll be happy to know that you can also customize and save moves into each of the four panels on the 3DS's touch-screen display that already has supers mapped to it.

Though we didn't get to multiplayer matches, you might think that offering such control schemes to players would inevitably make things a little unbalanced. Fortunately, Capcom will be including a feature that lets you filter out opponents based on your preferences, so if you don't want to play against players using the light option, then you don't have to. As for more details on multiplayer matches, there will be both local and global multiplayer matches, and like in the console games, you can set everything up in such a way that other players can challenge you while you're playing solo in the arcade mode of the game. Additionally, there will be a ranking mode similar to the one found in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, based on battle points. Up to six people within a local area can also watch multiplayer matches and can do so in either the standard view or the new 3D view.

3D view in Super Street Fighter IV: 3D edition places the camera high over the shoulder of your selected character. This view does a really nice job of showing off the great character models as well as the 3DS's 3D effect. That being said, in the brief time we spent with 3D view, it takes some time to get used to. We had a little trouble measuring the distance of fireballs (in other words, we jumped into them--often), but we'll be interested to see if we get more acclimated to the new perspective with a little extra time.

When playing multiplayer matches, you can use the camera perspective you prefer, so one player might be using the 3D view, while the other can use the standard view. It's worth mentioning that both perspectives use the 3DS's 3D effect, which can be turned off completely for both views by using the slider. If you do turn off the 3D effect, the frame rate will get a little extra boost, but even with 3D turned on, the frame rate is fine.

In addition to arcade, versus, training, and challenge modes, Super Street Fighter IV contains a StreetPass-specific mode where figurines do battle. There are approximately 500 figurines in the game that can be found either by grinding for them in various modes or by entering a lottery option. Each figurine has its own unique set of stats that come into play when you come across someone else with the game and figurine data. When you're not actively playing the game, your figurines will do battle with another player (via StreetPass), and you can find out the results of these matches when you start playing the game again.

A few more extra details: It seems all of the costumes from the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game will be available in the 3DS version from the start. There's also a game-sharing feature where you can send a limited number of characters and levels to other people without the game so they can give it a try until they turn the system off. But overall, the game plays just like the console versions, and while there are some slight changes to the backgrounds (some objects don't animate like they do in the console versions, and there's some detail missing), the game looks great. We'll bring you more on Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition as it becomes available.

To all you people complaining about fighting spammers, I have quoted this, the second sentence of the second paragraph from this very article: "Fortunately, Capcom will be including a feature that lets you filter out opponents based on your preferences, so if you don't want to play against players using the light option, then you don't have to."

@sonictb18gamer So you deal with pros by spamming them with the cheapest moves you can? That makes you one of the bad and cheap players plaguing the Street Fighter community.Do us a favor and learn how to play or just dont play at all.Spamming is not how you should be playing the game, there are other moves for a reason.I may have beaten tons of spammers on PSN but i rather not deal with people who are not willing to learn how to play the game.Which is getting steadily worse and worse.

@DevilKazeya Thats fine i finally decided i wont be buying the 3Ds anyway. After seeing the NGP i have no reason to. I guess not many gets the point of my posts or are REAL fans of street fighter. At least people who played Capcom VS SNK EO 2 know what i mean. I just dont see why people are defending this.It doesnt teach anyone anything on how to play the game.It teaches that spammers are good, i already had enough of that on the ps3 version. Now its going to be far worse.Even if they switch to pro mode they will be trying to spam just as they had before. If you dont understand now, you will when it comes out.I forsee many many threads complaining about spammers and turtles.Oh wait those already exist and yes it will be worse. For people who dont get this ill just take it that your one of the casuals or "pro casual" that are ruining games these days.Making them easier and taking away that sense of accomplishment when you beat a game.I have been taking back games left and right because of this.Besides Demon Souls and few others, real difficulty just isnt alive anymore.

I am so ready for this game to come out its been a long time since SF was on Nintendo systems so it a great way for them to come back, and we won't have to buy the costumes from the first two game (sweet :D)this game is so on my pre-order list with the 3DS I can't wait.... But everyone who getting mad about the light mode just calm down I mean yeah there will be rookie spamming the touch screen, but if you are a pro then you should have no problem dealing with them (most of the so-call-pro I deal with spams with ryu & ken moves anyway :D) besides look at the rookie eyes some of them may have never play a fighting game like street figther there whole life and the one that will buy the game made only buy it after playing it with the single-card download having no skill and fighting a all-out pro who can use every single fighter with a 45 hit-combo you would use light mode yourself :P and don't say the all light mode ppl are weak just for they use it (I was a easy mode user when blazblue came out and now I am a pro with a lot of combo, and that don't need it WHAT :D) just have fun with the game thats what I am going.(with the figure mode and 3d) if your to pro to have fun then set light mode and deal with it and your life for you have issue epic fail to angry pros :P.

No offense but any time i would encounter a 'light mode' user it would be beating a helpless child.Just to clarify on how easy moves are.Down forward punch, down back kick, thumb roll on the directional(wiggle your thumb) punch. You mastered Ryu's basics.Im just saying light mode isnt needed thats all.The game was fairly easy to begin with. And honestly any friend of mine that comes along with a copy and starts playing light mode i wont take it easy on.After that ill teach them how to really play.Tbh on the playstation network i took the time out of my day to teach new players i faced the basics in private rooms.I would even teach how to agressively counter fireballs and such to deal with spammers. I guess for the most part i just dont understand why this mode is needed.Street fighter 4 holds your hand alot already, more than any street fighter game to date.I just think this mode is overkill.

Actually to just clarify... I get the idea for an easy mode for new players. We can all relate to trying to teaching people dragon balls and dragon punches. Which is why it's cool. I had a personal misunderstanding where I read it as it will improve gameplay for us vets because of the 3DS's layout. My bad. @WolfGrey Also dude... get over it. It's optional. You don't like it, you don't have to use it... at all. But you never know... When you have a non-SF player game-sharing with you and you're trying to explain the Quarter circle forward motion you might be glad it's there. If you know what you're doing you'll still easily beat them, but it won't feel like beating up a helpless child.

@King9999 I'm sure they'll balance it out. I trust Capcom know what their doing. My guess would be that pressing a charge move on this 'easy mode' will just automatically start an animation process. So if you press a button for a flash kick and Guile was standing, it would go into his crouch stance before actually doing the move... ..At least I hope. Could you imagine flash kick spamming? Online would be a nightmare...

I don't get the need for an easy mode. I spent years playing different versions of Street Fighter 2 on my SNES controller just fine... And then again with the same set up on PSP with Street Fight Alpha 3 and PS3 controller with SFIV and SuperSFIV. Heck, I even did OK with SFA3 on the 4 button set up of the GBA... when you had to push both buttons to do a medium attack. In fact I had issues when trying to move over to an arcade stick at first because I was so used to the typical controller layout. But if it helps more people enjoy the game... Trying to play Street Fighter on the Genesis/MegaDrive with a 3-button set up... now THAT was a problem.

One last note: Its one thing to enjoy a game but another to take it for a ride without enjoying the point of the game.Light mode players will never really see what a fully fleshed out character is like to really use. They wont know that most of the commands for fighters like ryu,ken and MANY others are so simple a little kid could do it.Giving them insta moves will just take away from the experience. At least from what the real street fighter game is.I feel like it was just tacked on so they would get more money because people who arent willing to even focus on the game they bought will play then. It takes maybe only 5 minutes to learn the basics of a character. If you choose to master that character it will take longer but there is a certain joy to doing so dont you think? There is a challenge mode that can teach you the simple basics required. In 10 minutes you know all the specials and supers of a character.Who knows, you might even discover that you can do more than that. My point here is that players dont have to dedicate a large amount of time at all to learn the basics of a character and have fun.To take away even learning how to play(which is so simple) is just sad to me.Call me stubborn, call me elitist, i dont care.I just want street fighter to remain what it is.

I dont see many people here understand what catering to casuals can do to games like street fighter or others.I guess ill give a few examples. Devil May Cry 3-Very difficult game for many but a great hit with amazing sales and was well received. Devil May Cry 4-Was made easier for players, the difficulty was toned down a great deal. Most who bought it , beat it once and left alone, for many there just wasnt a want to do more modes like 3.Ironic that you found less copies of DMC3 on a used game shelf than DMC4. Snk Vs Capcom SVC chaos: Great game, it seemed oddly aged at release but was a very solid game and well done. Capcom VS SNK 2 EO:When released it received alot of attention but however not very many sales. Many people like me would shy away from it.However i did buy it eventually and i did enjoy it for a short while. But after seeing the EO system at work i was shamed of having bought it.So took it back. Im sure i can easily look up other games.Like Ninja Gaiden Black for xbox to Ninja Gaiden Sigma(same game basically).Lost alot of difficulty in the transition and kinda took away the real fun of the game.Still solid but kinda of a shame.

Ok here then. This is why there should not an easy mode.Ill have to add reasons from EO to get my point across. 1.It lowers the bar greatly so that people who arent willing to work or practice the game and enjoy it to its fullest can just pick up and insta move. 2.Judging by EO(very similar system)the inputs for these instamoves are actually faster than you can perform normally. So yes somone who knows the cheap inputs would beat someone in pro mode or at the very least be the worst kind of spam fighter possible. But you can choose who you fight. 3.By catering to casuals with a game that will be bought by many, the game company is then expected that the next one will be just as easy and friendly.Lowering the bar once more and might very well eventually ruin the game. Hell me myself , im only an average player despite how much i like street fighter, but i earned all my victories with the real system not some cheap one button press one.If i lost oh well i practiced harder.Isnt this the point of fighting games? The spirit of them? 4.For all of you who hasnt played Capcom Vs SNK EO, i suggest you go watch some vids of EO players. Its very bad.And broken. 5.Im not an elitist, im someone who wants the street fighter to remain intact and to remain true to its roots as much as possible. This was never a problem selling them before, why add this terrible mode now? 6.If you arent good enough to win then practice, dont resort to some insta move mode.

not everyone has the same motives for playing video games. a lot of people just want to enjoy them and have fun. i know i'm not willing to dedicate hours up on hours to learning how to play a game so i can beat other people online. not that i will use the easy mode, because i could care less about if it's in the game. if you are good, you won't have a problem beating someone who is using the one button moves.

@WolfGrey Cheat for new players? What in the friggin hell you mean? Mapping buttons for specials is BS anyway, and won't make anyone better. If you have minimal knowledge and execution, your output will be far better in the pro mode, and you'll never lose to anyone just because they traded normals for an insta-hadouken. Seriously, people that simply can't do a dragon punch motion won't start to beat everyone else just because now they don't need to execute the motion. Plus, they just lost a bunch of normal moves, what makes them even more vunerable.

SSF4 on 3DS over a PC version!? After everyone at capcom-unity asking for a PC release for nearly 2 years. This is BS. Capcom needs to figure out that PC gamers are also a Part of their repotoire. This is a slap in the face.

@WolfGrey there's having a valid opinion, and there's being an elitist who thinks that only people such as yourself and I who are vets at games should enjoy games. You even acknowledged that you'll be able to play only people with your same skill level so what's the big deal? Face it, games aren't as niche as they used to be. They're expanding, demographics are broadening, and it's time to accept and embrace the change.

@dzimm My point was about even having the feature at all.It shouldnt be there. There shouldnt be an easy mode feature at all. Lol at all the people thumbing me down. You guys approve of the game having a way to basically cheat for new players? So you dont actually ever learn how to play the game?Because that was what i was bashing. If this what you approve of then thumb me down.Enjoy your watered down street fighter. Thumb up if you dont approve of this new player friendly crap. All the skill needed to play is taken away. Why would anyone who has played easy mode switch to pro mode? Why bother when they can do all the moves in just a touch? If you want this easy mode removed thumb me up.

Before you girls get your panties in a bunch, you should be aware that you can elect to filter online opponents so that you will only be matched with those using Pro Mode (meaning no touchscreen presets).

@fetusfart18 Im with you.We were doing this long ago with Street fighter alpha and such. Why in the world does it need to be changed for a system that has 6 buttons anyway? @King9999 Its easy playing them on a handheld. If you actually lay the layout over a controller you will see the layout is the same. The only difference is there is only 2 shoulder buttons and your "controller" is wider. You have light, medium, and heavy punch and kick easily put to the layout of the 6 buttons. That covers all the buttons with ease.Pressing two punch buttons or kick along side one of the shoulders for ultras is easy too.Use your thumb to cover both.As long as the buttons respond well you are safe to play well. As for your question about charge characters, dont worry about it.They have never had anything happen like that on the old handhelds(gameboy advance and even gameboy) so i doubt there will be a problem. The charge attacks will be the same as usual. No change.Same with charged supers and ultras.

Im getting a laugh at the fact my comment was thumbed down to the point of it being hidden. The choice of not using the feature wasnt the point of my comment. It was the point the feature was even there.I take it anyone who didnt agree with me is either: 1.Not a big street fighter fan and thought street fighter 4 was too hard 2.Never played Capcom Vs SNK 2 EO so has no clue why the system was broken when it catered to casuals 3.Prefers games to become easier rather than work to play them, who needs practice if you can do a super at the press of a button huh? You casuals make me sick.Street Fighter 4 was even more casual friendly than many games in the series. You had a challenge mode that could walk you through every technique in the game and give you good combos to learn.A very easy to read command chart. And even has ultras to use when you get beaten too much and need a come back.Certain characters were harder yes but for the most part it was easy to learn. And now you get a easy mode where you can do some of the hardest to pull ultras or supers at the touch of a button.Akuma anyone? Look i appreciate they made it so you can choose which but the easy mode just shouldnt be there. This is ruining the games that we took pride for being able to get good at.What is the point if some kid can do the same move in half a second as well as chain every move possible with ease? All the work is taken out.

@SolidTy: They clearly changed the control scheme because of the 3DS' layout, not because it's a Nintendo system. It's not easy playing a six-button fighter on handhelds, and definitely not on the GC pad. I'm curious as to how charge characters (Guile, Dee Jay, etc.) will be handled since the properties of their moves are different from non-charge characters...will there be some sort of cooldown before you can perform a move again? I'd hate to see things like Flash Kicks while walking forward.

@Shadow_Fax because with the fast paced, hitbox-based nature of fighting games, if they aren't running at 60 fps, It's fairly likely you'll get hit by an attack you didn't see coming or you thought was going to miss. Shooters and action games can get away with 30 fps (40 for multiplayer shooters), and RPGs can work with anything short of completely stopped (though it won't be much fun).

All we need now is for the 3DS to show as much graphics as this game dose on the new mario Kart game and we would be in buisness. I mean Nintendo kinda dropped the ball on the Wii platform, and the DS platform. Now they are doing everything they can to stop supporting it with shovelware, and start supporting it with good third, and first party titles that dont take 2-4 years to hit the market after almost everybody stopped caring. Wii is turning it's self into an online platform this year as after the 3DS launches a new online system will be added via a system update, as well as several key games that will take advantage of their new DLC system for it as well.

@ WolfGrey Yeah, the easy supers with just a hit of a button will make this game more easier but, how about they make matches online have a choice to fight with the help buttons or without them it would make more sense if it did happen making matches with more variety. If you dislike that feature when playing versus a computer then just ignore that the help buttons exist but, that's what I would do.

This game looks surprisingly good, te 3DS is one powerful little box. @WolfGrey, I agree with you I also don't care for casual gamers, they are the reason kinect exist, and that NINTENDO is now seen as a Childish company

Great so street fighter gets an easy mode just like capcom vs snk 2 eo.mapping supers and specials at the press of a button. How lame....even pro mode has a couple training wheels. They think we never got by when we played the old gamebody advance editions.I mean two shoulder buttons and 4 normal buttons is fine.Isnt that close to the normal layout anyway?Just keep that.I mean it just means we wouldnt have the 3 button in one for ultras.Thats fine any player can get by on that. Really stupid move to make the game so casual friendly.Ya alot of people complained about street fighter 4 being too hard but these are also the people who shouldnt be playing a fighting game anyway or at least not online if its too hard. The button presses were always fairly simple, you want complicated then go play the tekken games. This catering to casuals crap is killing games left and right, making them easier and leaving real players like me in the dust.It saddens me.

"If you do turn off the 3D effect, the frame rate will get a little extra boost, but even with 3D turned on, the frame rate is fine. " This line concerns me... as a Street fighter game, I've assumed all along that it would run at 60 fps in any mode, as any fighting game should. But, unless the ds screen runs above 120hz (60hz divided by 2 eyes), which I doubt, there shouldn't be ANY room for improvement in framerate at all. So are we talking 30fps in 3d mode? That would be very disappointing. Fighting games have to be 60fps, 3d or not, portable or not. ***EDIT*** it's been confirmed all over the place that DOA will run at 30fps in 3d mode, and 60 fps in 2d mode (3d slider turned off).Perhaps it is the same with Street Fighter. If we were indeed locked to 30fps in 3d, the 60fps 2d option would certainly be a nice alternative.

@Eddie G0RD0 They'd just release a new version. "Street Fighter IV, Super Turbo Ultra Alpha 3D Edition", perhaps. Can you even do such a big change in a patch alone?

3D view just doesn't seem very Street Fighter-ish. Of course you still have the 2D view option, and other series change a lot more between entries, but for a series that never changes, the angled view is a pretty big difference. Not that it bothers me, it's just a bit surprising.

Cool Capcom, I guess. But how about bringing out the Arcade Edition characters to consoles, like fans have been asking for, for months and months and months?

Can't wait! If Kid Icarus doesn't make it to launch, this is the game I'm taking home with my 3DS. I don't see why people would hate light mode though. Seems a lot more practical.
