Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS gets new character: Punch-Out's Little Mac

From the February Nintendo Direct, Super Smash Bros. is getting the short star of Punch-Out who packs a powerful punch.

The diminutive fighter from Nintendo's Punch-Out series is the newest contender in the Wii U and 3DS's Super Smash Bros. roster.

During this morning's Nintendo Direct we saw Little Mac unleashing a flurry of punches against his opponents, but just like in the game, his signature move is a powered-up uppercut. The move seems to leave you temporarily vulnerable, making him a potentially high-risk/high-reward combatant.

A sampling of some other recent additions to the Smash Bros. roster since it's E3 reveal include:

Luigi
The Pokemon Lucario
King Dedede from the Kirby universe
Super Mario Galaxy's Princess Rosalina
Olimar and the Pikmin (which sounds like a great band name)
Sonic
the Wii Fit Trainer

And there were also some upgrades made to the iconic Home Run Bat and controversial changes made to the way edge-grabbing will work in the game. Super Smash Bros. still has no firm release date; we know it's coming this year, but we already knew from earlier reports that the game won't be released this Spring. And while the game will come to both 3DS and Wii U, the title will not feature cross-play capabilities. But that leaves a lot of time to add even more characters to the roster. WOW FINALLY, the mighty boxer from nintendo is recognized in the way he deserves. COME ON! someone that can beat Myke Tyson must be in smash bros.

In the other hand, there are a lot of heroes they are not taking in count, one of them, SKETCH TURNER from Comix Zone!, his combos, RoadKill, and the super hero guy! it could be a really great opponent from sega... a more real character, like little mac, and a fresh wind from old times.

I wrote an analysis on Little Mac to clear up some of the confusion about the character. The boxer's combos are devastating! If you don't know much about his super armor or low moving normals I highly suggest checking it out.

<< LINK REMOVED >> seeing you're profile picture makes me wonder why they havent put rpg characters in the brawl games such as chrono,frog,robo,magus (chrono trigger).....cyan,sabin etc (final fantasy 6).....boy,girl and sprite (secret of mana). The next Brawl game would sell like crazy if they included some of these characters.

Why are people so obsessed with Little Mac? I have nothing against this guy and he brings some variety to the roster but why is he such a popular charackter, I really don't know.

As for his popularity, (Mike Tysons) Punch Out was a very beloved game on the NES. One of the classics. Other Punch Out games were also well liked, but the original is a piece of gaming history.

Can't say I'm surprised people are excited about it, though I'm guessing it's probably more of the older crowd.

This guy was better off as a Assist trophy

SSB4 needs more heavyweight original and unique fighters and villains like King K. Rool from the DK universe would totally fit in instead of another generic human character with barely any interesting move-sets. Heres a preview of what King K. Rool would look/play like << LINK REMOVED >>

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The powered up KO punch looks like it would work like Ike's neutral-B, where you can let it go early but if you get it fully charged it's lethal. The little arrows are just for user-friendliness I'd imagine.

Grammatical snafu aside, (proofread your articles closely!), he looks like a fun character. Has to get up close and personal and with lack of projectiles, it should make those happy who like to be in the thick of things. I see him as a character who'd do well with players that have a quick hand-eye reflex and able to respond quickly to attacks and the ongoing action on the screen. If the player keeps their cool and keeps that counter move ready in their back pocket, along with dodging skills to sidestep projectiles and get his way in, Little Mac could definitely float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.

I have to say though, I'm not too keen on his Final Smash. Get huge and rampage around is one we've seen done before, and I would have preferred to see something more unique from his character. Like maybe utilizing a play on "Shadow Boxing", where a boxer trains by landing blows and practicing against an imaginary opponent. Such as, say, creating a silhouette of Mac across the arena that moves in towards the center as Mac does, and so on, covering both sides of the field at once to pincer opponents between them, while attack power and speed is heightened, to attack from both sides. That would be interesting.

The game that is really going to push Wii U consoles is clearly Mario Kart 8. With it releasing in late May, Nintendo is giving PS4 and even Xbone a chance to over shadow any momentum they are anticipating. I own a Wii U and will certainly be picking up Mark Kart. For those that don't own a Wii U... 3-$350 to play Mario Kart? Good luck Nintendo, I'm still pulling for you.
