Summer Game Fest And Xbox Are Releasing Over 40 Game Demos Next Week

Be the first to play Tunic, Lake, Sable, and more exclusively on Xbox consoles starting on June 15.

Following on from the success of the ID@Xbox Summer Game Fest Demo last year, Microsoft is once again partnering up with the Summer Game Fest to help showcase over 40 games next week exclusively on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S starting on June 15. Many big independent titles, such as Tunic, Lake, Sable, and more will be available to play as bite-sized experiences ahead of their respective launches.

The Xbox Wire post stresses that these demos aren't like many that you can find on the Xbox Store today. Instead, they're meant to represent something akin to a show-floor demo that you'd typically find around E3; short, vertical slices that give you a good idea of a game but might still be far from what the final product represents. Some of the games receiving demos might be close to release while others might still be months or years away, so it's good to keep that in mind.

Now Playing: Tunic Gameplay | Summer Game Fest 2021

That said, there are some great titles coming to the program next week. Sable, the eye-catching, desert-faring adventure had its release date announced during the Summer Game Fest kickoff presentation, but you can give it a go next week for an early taste. Tunic, the Zelda-like adventure, will similarly be present, as well as the narrative adventure Lake, base-building survival game The Riftbreaker, turn-based adventure game Echo Generation, and more. Microsoft says it will release a full list soon.

These demos will only be available for a week, although the post does hint that some developers might choose to keep them up longer. Either way it would be best to get to the ones that interest you most as soon as you can.

This sounds really exciting. I'm looking forward to exploring some of these. Especially Tunic! :)

Great news and a great way for Indies to get the publicity they often don’t receive.

I just saw a new Kickstarter. It seemed very interesting to me. Please support it.

@johnny0779: Yea, but you have to sieve through a 100 of them to possibly get one title & that one ends up not playing for long anyways. Personally, not worth all that effort for bloatware.

Escape from Tarkov looked rather interesting though, but Crossfire X appears to be better.

After this showing I am more convinced now than ever that gaming is dying a slow & greedy death! The indie, lifeless & colorless content that comes out is utterly depressing.

In the 90's & early 2000's devs could only dream of what they can do with more power & struggled to make the best out of such minuscule of resources. Now they are just plain lazy & strive for the bare minimum & enough to just say they have a game. It is really sad to see in a time when we have the worlds most powerful console ever!

I hope E3 will not foster more disappointment...PLEASE!

@just1mohr: Game development, on the scale you are describing for today, is incredibly expensive, time-consuming, and complicated. To do what your asking takes massive resources, and that would be the studios sole project for 5-7 years, most likely.

@theduckofdeath: If they would have showed me a new Metal Slug but with modern day graphics, StarFox, Contra, 1942, Soviet Strike, PunchOut...I would have been ecstatic. All would have taken 2 years or less given modern day engines & resources.

@just1mohr: That would be cool. I just don't see it happening (for most of those), unless a small team was handed the task or the rights. Fan made projects would likely be hit with cease & desist letters.

Most companies would not take the risk on those series. Maybe they ran their course -- multiple sequels and remakes are out there for some. I could see Nintendo doing something with Star Fox, though.

@theduckofdeath: No, I mean I would take any type of clone in the aforementioned list & there are many other games I would love to see as well. I did come across in today's showings two games that I am excited for, Splitgate & Haunted Space...finally.

Haunted Space looks like it might be the StarFox type clone I have been waiting for. Tiny Tina art style also looked interesting, but if the gameplay is slow then it would be a turn off FOR ME...remains to be seen.

@johnny0779: Oh so you want me to pretend & lie and you want to live in a world of lies? The one who rates SoulCalibur V a melodramatic 6/10?

Fine when you do it, but no one else can have a contrary opinion.

You can love the show & express your feelings toward it and I would love to hear it at the same token. In my circle of friends none of us are running out to buy these games & we all have the same sentiment about the tons of garbage that are being pumped into the digital stores nowadays.

@just1mohr: Hades

Celeste

Limbo

Inside

Braid

The Witness

Super Meat Boy

Bastion

Subnautica

Fez

Undertale

You may not like many, or ANY of these games. But you'd be hard pressed to find a person willing to call them lazy or colorless.

@VANGUARD003: I believe I own just about all of those on some platform or another. Good words abound regarding these titles. While I haven't gotten around to playing many, I did chip through Limbo over a few years and am now far into Inside. Great games -- Limbo was brilliant. Fantastic aesthetic and truly well design puzzles.

@VANGUARD003: Glad that some people like them, but if you gave them to me for free I would not play them. I cannot lie about my stance & feelings about this.

I look at games like Cool Spot (SNES) & Sunset Riders (SNES/arcade) and the artistry & details that were pushed during that time are utterly amazing when compared to many Indies this gen. Every pixel was pushed & there was a sense of striving for the best & not settling. I am happy just to look & not even play the aforementioned games, but they are also fun to play. Metal Slug & Contra had amazing art styles too. So I find myself wanting to go back & play these older games rather than even start the majority of these Indies.

So now what is happening is that the digital stores are filling up with an insane amount of these games that not many really ask for & not many play (aside from the more popular ones). This clogs up the stores & makes it much more cumbersome & annoying to find the games you like & it is an injustice to the extraordinary work of some of the AAA & AA games on the store.

At the very least they should have made a separate section for Indie & smaller games & not clogged the stores. And this way, even I would visit them from time to time to hopefully find that needle in a haystack.
