Study: Minorities underrepresented in games

USC researcher surveys 150 best-selling games, finds zero Hispanic or Native American protagonists; women, children, and the elderly also disproportionately rare.

Recent years have seen the explosive growth of games into previously untapped demographics. And while publishers have pursued these new markets by focusing on accessibility and games in nontraditional genres, they're missing an opportunity to open the field up even further, according to one University of Southern California researcher.

Black characters are underrepresented outside the sports genre, with Williams saying games often portray them as
Black characters are underrepresented outside the sports genre, with Williams saying games often portray them as "gangsters and street people."

A study published last month in the journal New Media & Society surveyed the 150 best-selling games from March 2005 through February 2006 (which accounted for more than 95 percent of game sales over that span) and tallied up the race, gender, and ages of the characters within. The study, conducted by Dmitri Williams, an assistant professor at USC's Annenberg School for Communication, found that adults, whites, and men are disproportionately represented in games, to the detriment of nearly all other demographics.

"The results show a systematic overrepresentation of males, white and adults and a systematic underrepresentation of females, Hispanics, Native Americans, children and the elderly," Williams concluded.

As might have been expected, men were grossly overrepresented in games. While they make up slightly more than half the US population, men account for more than 85 percent of game characters. As far as age groups go, adults were overrepresented (nearly 87 percent of game characters compared to 59 percent of the US population), at the expense of children (less than 4 percent of game characters but 21 percent of the country) and the elderly (less than 2 percent in games, but more than 12 percent of the population).

The study also found that white people make up about 80 percent of game characters, compared to 75 percent of the US population. Asian/Pacific populations were the only other race category to be overrepresented (5 percent in games compared to 4 percent in the US), with Hispanics and Native Americans both significantly underrepresented.

Hispanics make up less than 3 percent of game characters, but more than 12 percent of the population, while Native Americans represent less than 1 percent of the country and make up less than 0.1 percent of game characters. On top of that, the two groups appeared solely as supporting characters in games, with the researchers recording no Hispanic or Native American protagonists in their study.

Williams said the underrepresentation could be interpreted by players as a message that the missing minorities are "relatively unimportant and powerless compared to more heavily present groups." He went on to express concern that Latinos and other groups could be turned off to games by their lack of representation, and "subsequently, they may have less interest in technology and its opportunities for class advancement. Ironically, they would be less likely to become game makers themselves, helping to perpetuate the cycle."

Interestingly, the breakdown of gender and race representation in games closely mirrors that of US game developers as a whole, with one exception. Williams said black characters are overrepresented compared to the number of black developers in the workforce.

Portrayals of Native Americans are rare in games. Prey and Brave have come out since the study was conducted, but examples are still few and far between.
Portrayals of Native Americans are rare in games. Prey and Brave have come out since the study was conducted, but examples are still few and far between.

The researchers looked at the numbers for player-controlled characters, as well as supporting characters, and weighted the results according to sales. As explained in the article, "when the most popular game (Madden 06) sells over 6 million copies and the least popular (game #150 in the present study's sampling frame, BeyBlade) 15,000 copies, it is safe to assume that one game will be played significantly more than another. Thus, if the goal is to measure what the public is actually consuming, content from the two should not be given equal weight in the analysis."

There are other factors acknowledged by Williams that should be taken into account. The researchers only considered human characters in compiling their numbers. Data was obtained for quasihuman and nonhuman characters as well, but not incorporated in the paper on age, race, and gender portrayal. The popularity of sports games influenced the survey's gender results, as there are an abundance of games like Madden NFL and the WWE SmackDown titles, but no games for women's professional sports.

Finally, Williams said there was a "striking similarity" between his findings and similar analyses performed on television programs. He suggested that Latinos and Native Americans are systematically underrepresented in many forms of media and expressed surprise that the situation persists despite the growing Latino population in the country.

Williams told GameSpot that he has another article that will soon be published looking at body shapes of game characters versus the body shapes of real people. He also previously studied the amount of profanity in games (and determined there wasn't a whole lot of it).

Why the hell does it matter? I don't want to see a properly represented black game character, they'd probably get it horribly wrong either way. Its just like the Asian impression of a black person. We've all -got- to have fat sausage lips. Or we aren't black.

systematically eh? all the game developers get together and say that black people will be "underrepresented" by 2% this year, is that what they mean? put all this studying effort into finding out why no racing game seems to have a mazda mx-6 in it, or better yet do something useful like finding ways to make crops yield more food in 3rd world countries

Yeah, like others said the reason most game characters are asian or white is because asians and whites make games. If other races want to be in games then they need to get crack'n. It's no one else's responsibility, but their own to make sure they get represented. Whites, and the Japanese are not the baby sitters of the human race. Imagine America get's to Mars and everyone says we are racist for not putting a Mexican flag up there! Also why are there not any white people on BET or the WB? Why are all the Wayans brothers black? Why are there so few Asians in Mexico? Why is there only one white rapper and no asian rappers? Why do comedy's with mostly black casts use horribly stereotypical asians, gays, and whites? Are black people racist or something?

Oh great, by the end of this journalists march we are going to see some messed up games. Games that cater to both men and women. Gears of War 3 will have a clothing interface for all the characters and a motion controlled ball game. No wonder Natal was invented. Good thing developers look at the context of character and not the race.

Well, personally I don't care, really. If every character of a Final Fantasy game were black (And Barret was turned white, lol) I would enjoy the game just as much... (Mind you, I don't mean to use "black" as a harsh term, it is just that African wouldn't work since there is no Africa in Final Fantasy games.) But then again, I am white, so I guess it doesn't matter.

Umm...... I'm part Hispanic and i don't want or need to see some brown dude walking around in a game I'm playing o.o Things are working out just fine the way they are. The number one rule of EVERYTHING is: If It's Not Broken, Don't "Fix" It. This is a stupid thing to worry about.

Who.... cares? Wow, some people look wayyyy deeper in games than they should. Games don't represent reality, nor they ever should represent. On that note I'm pretty sure sex is underrepresented too, so why don't you start with fixing that.

my heart weeps at this news, what a travesty look this is not rocket science and i still dont understand why i have to hear this crap; it depends on the maker of the game - the majority of them are either asian or white so they make character that reflect themselves, and atleast in asia make up 99.99 percent of their customers i dont see anybody complaining wheres the white people in Maeda, its cause Perry is black, he makes movies based on what he knows and identifies with have you ever seen Telemundo or Gala or any other Hispanic channel, their casts to my knowledge tend to be almost all hispanic so this argument is very tired and needs to be put down, besides if you want to get technical, rpgs what i play are 90 plus percent of the time in fantasy worlds - these people technically arent white or asian but fantasy world race

Who here is interested in playing a game where the main character needs a walker? Wow, who would have thought that the elderly are under-represented in games. I think that some minorities are under-represented for good reason, while others are not.

I don't know about you, but it depends on the game I'm playing whether or not the identity of the protagonist matters. 3rd person action adventure games for example, given that the story fits, could be a three legged cyclops for all I care. If the game depends on role playing elements, then if given the chance, I would create a character similar to myself. At least for one play-through. That's part of the beauty of an RPG with a healthy amount of choice. I don't think it's fair to say that any one minority or group is underrepresented or misrepresented in a video game, especially if the game is written as a fictional story. It's the writers' right to do what they will concerning whom they pick to be the protagonist in their games. If you want more representation, then write your own games. We don't need to make everything politically "kosher".

On the last note-it really is sad how little profanity there is in video games. With the odd exception (GTA series, some shooters), there is almost no cursing to be heard in video games, at least compared to the level of violence in many titles. And why can't people say the f-word in teen games-are you really going to tell me that a teenager should be allowed to shoot virtual people in the face, but can't hear people use harsh language? Seriously, are you telling me that killing people is less immoral and offensive than HEARING a swear word?!?!?! But I guess that's the ESRB for you (the MPAA the exact same as well).

Oh boy, now they are pulling the "Race" card on Video Games? Well how about any other medium? I mean when is the last time you saw a major summer blockbuster action movie with a "Minority" as the lead? Then again what about strong lead female characters in action movies and in games? or gay characters? I mean I dont see the problem, if a game really offended those of a certain Ethnic or Sexual background cause of a lack of lead character that fits them then they shouldn buy the game, its as simple as that. But it doesnt look like that big of a deal outside the academics who only do research like this cause its a "hot topic" and they wanna make an easy in into the Journals.

the title says it all... by definition, minorities are under-represented. Also, what's this about have realistic body shapes? Video games are a virtual reality... do we really want our virtual reality to also be as disappointing as real life?

Personally I never understand why gamers are so offended by news like this. I was just reading G4's the feed and they had a similar article. People practically freaked out. This is relevant news, if not just to know about. For example there is 1 woman character I noticed in Gears of Wars 1 (haven't had time to play the second). Games could use a little more variety in gender and races. Now I'm not saying they have to, but many games are racist and sexist. I hate to piss off otakus, but Japan can be the largest perpetrator of this. To clarify I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT RES 5. Just take a look at any jrpg and you'll find almost nobody who is another color other than white. Well, I'm probably not going to follow this thread beacuse i'm probably going to get lists of rpgs that disprove what I just said or just be flamed. I don't feel like that bs so Im'a going back to my school work. sorry for the poor grammar and bad spelling, but I'm tired and I honestly don't give a damn what people think.

This study was a little pointless, I mean this is something we already know. With that said there should be more games staring minorities and women. The only thing that gets me is that they mentioned the elderly as one of the under-representative demographics in video games yet who honestly wants to play a game staring some old guy. Wait wasn't that MGS4!
