Study: Minorities underrepresented in games

USC researcher surveys 150 best-selling games, finds zero Hispanic or Native American protagonists; women, children, and the elderly also disproportionately rare.

Recent years have seen the explosive growth of games into previously untapped demographics. And while publishers have pursued these new markets by focusing on accessibility and games in nontraditional genres, they're missing an opportunity to open the field up even further, according to one University of Southern California researcher.

Black characters are underrepresented outside the sports genre, with Williams saying games often portray them as
Black characters are underrepresented outside the sports genre, with Williams saying games often portray them as "gangsters and street people."

A study published last month in the journal New Media & Society surveyed the 150 best-selling games from March 2005 through February 2006 (which accounted for more than 95 percent of game sales over that span) and tallied up the race, gender, and ages of the characters within. The study, conducted by Dmitri Williams, an assistant professor at USC's Annenberg School for Communication, found that adults, whites, and men are disproportionately represented in games, to the detriment of nearly all other demographics.

"The results show a systematic overrepresentation of males, white and adults and a systematic underrepresentation of females, Hispanics, Native Americans, children and the elderly," Williams concluded.

As might have been expected, men were grossly overrepresented in games. While they make up slightly more than half the US population, men account for more than 85 percent of game characters. As far as age groups go, adults were overrepresented (nearly 87 percent of game characters compared to 59 percent of the US population), at the expense of children (less than 4 percent of game characters but 21 percent of the country) and the elderly (less than 2 percent in games, but more than 12 percent of the population).

The study also found that white people make up about 80 percent of game characters, compared to 75 percent of the US population. Asian/Pacific populations were the only other race category to be overrepresented (5 percent in games compared to 4 percent in the US), with Hispanics and Native Americans both significantly underrepresented.

Hispanics make up less than 3 percent of game characters, but more than 12 percent of the population, while Native Americans represent less than 1 percent of the country and make up less than 0.1 percent of game characters. On top of that, the two groups appeared solely as supporting characters in games, with the researchers recording no Hispanic or Native American protagonists in their study.

Williams said the underrepresentation could be interpreted by players as a message that the missing minorities are "relatively unimportant and powerless compared to more heavily present groups." He went on to express concern that Latinos and other groups could be turned off to games by their lack of representation, and "subsequently, they may have less interest in technology and its opportunities for class advancement. Ironically, they would be less likely to become game makers themselves, helping to perpetuate the cycle."

Interestingly, the breakdown of gender and race representation in games closely mirrors that of US game developers as a whole, with one exception. Williams said black characters are overrepresented compared to the number of black developers in the workforce.

Portrayals of Native Americans are rare in games. Prey and Brave have come out since the study was conducted, but examples are still few and far between.
Portrayals of Native Americans are rare in games. Prey and Brave have come out since the study was conducted, but examples are still few and far between.

The researchers looked at the numbers for player-controlled characters, as well as supporting characters, and weighted the results according to sales. As explained in the article, "when the most popular game (Madden 06) sells over 6 million copies and the least popular (game #150 in the present study's sampling frame, BeyBlade) 15,000 copies, it is safe to assume that one game will be played significantly more than another. Thus, if the goal is to measure what the public is actually consuming, content from the two should not be given equal weight in the analysis."

There are other factors acknowledged by Williams that should be taken into account. The researchers only considered human characters in compiling their numbers. Data was obtained for quasihuman and nonhuman characters as well, but not incorporated in the paper on age, race, and gender portrayal. The popularity of sports games influenced the survey's gender results, as there are an abundance of games like Madden NFL and the WWE SmackDown titles, but no games for women's professional sports.

Finally, Williams said there was a "striking similarity" between his findings and similar analyses performed on television programs. He suggested that Latinos and Native Americans are systematically underrepresented in many forms of media and expressed surprise that the situation persists despite the growing Latino population in the country.

Williams told GameSpot that he has another article that will soon be published looking at body shapes of game characters versus the body shapes of real people. He also previously studied the amount of profanity in games (and determined there wasn't a whole lot of it).

@thundaro America is held to a high standard because they made that standard. America thinks they're great and people say, "OK, why are you great?" and get responses like "Uh....Diversity?". You americans hold yourselves to a high standard and claim you're better than everyone just because you're country is called america. Look at how many WWII movies/games are made by americans, the people who decided to wait for it to come into their backyard before they even batted an eyelid. So, in conclusion, americans created those standards for themselves, and everybody dislikes them because they don't live up to those standards while americans just say things like there's a "Hate America trend".

So is this researcher saying that he is disappointed that there are not enough blacks, hispanics and asians to shoot/blow-up/kill in video games? Since most games involve violence of some sort I am wondering why we need diversity in the maiming of our fellow man? Do I really need to concern myself with...golly, I sure fragged a lot of white people tonight, sure wish this game had more blacks to frag for equalities sake! I find studies like this do more to set back human relations then promote them.

This study seems stupid to me and I am black and a psychology grad that has looked at researches with demographics bases. But I think looking at them in games is a little too far and a waste. I dont play games because of the races represented, I play them because they are fun. On another note, we have Cole Train and that was enough for me. lol.

To a point, making it about race isn't helping anyone. But at the same time there is this overabundance of white male adults in video games, but I can't say that it bothers me. I don't really pay attention to the race or gender of the characters. As to why kids aren't represented; they are kids, if an M game had you playing as a kid shooting people. Everyone would be upset.

@supermike6 then they should say they dislike things from there and not trash the whole country b/c of one dingleberry who gets himself published, that btw only a very small group of Americans would even care to read or care about it at all for that matter this Hate America trend is really annoying, mainly b/c it has no legs to stand on for many people, EVERY country, ALL of them have done things that they should not be proud of, why is it that only America is held to such a high standard and is expected to be perfect? it is pure and utter bullcrap IMO, thumb me down if you want i really do not care, just stating my opinion:)

@im-a-roustabot I totally agree with you. This anti-American rhetoric coming from people from other countries is getting on my nerves too. However I do want to correct you and point out that the current GTA series is being developed in the U.K. even though R*'s World HQ is in NYC.

@im-a-roustabout Wow, I'm surprised how many americans felt they need to respond to this. America (he meant the USA, btw) is not a continent, it's one third of one. He obviously didn't mean this completelyy literally, it's just generally american's who make stupid studies like this. Would you hate him so much if he had said something about Canada, or any other country? You guys are waay too patriotic and need to realize that when people say they hate america, they usually just mean dislike things that come from there.

Yea, the other day when I was playing Batman Arkham Asylum, I paused the game for a moment and thought to myself "Hmmm the lack of inclusion of Ethnic Minorities makes me feel as if they are relatively unimportant and powerless compared to more heavily present groups."....

@ Rontor That was low to say that and I feel like you owe this whole forum an apology. You wouldn't even be on this site posting if it wasn't for America. 360 is American, and so are a lot of third party publishers that make games like GTA. How dare you say you hate a whole continent when it was one group from one state in one city in one county in one business that conducted this study. Next time you have something to say about America keep it to yourself.

Well, duh...... this was true even in Bully, where there were very few Hispanics, children, blacks and an overwhelming number of white people. Heck, even the few girls in the thing were.... white! I was disappointed at that seriously.... I was hoping that at least ONE of the older white girls who you could kiss would be black.

Thing about it is, when you represent a race in a game, people get offended. If a hispanic (which I am) is in a game, but has a typical accent people will say it's racist when I feel like it's not. Same thing as the token black man. Make him talk like a thug and people start thinking whoever made the game is racist which is kinda unfair. People have differ kinds of vernaculars and lexicons, and I feel that developers wouldn't mind putting in more minorities if they knew they wouldn't be crucified for it! I for one would like to see a hispanic kickin' ass with the best of them :)

There are prominent minorities in all of the games I play- Fallout 3, GTA4, Halo 3, NCAA football, and Gears. And the reason there are more men in games is because men play games more than women. Protagonists in all media are usually men. I really get tired of the politically correct studies though. Only from academia, where people don't live in the real world and productivity does not matter, does stuff like this come out.

@Rontor I was going to state how ridiculous the study was as well. There is no doubt about that. But you gave me a reason to rant about ignorant POSs like you. How can you say that you hate a whole country just for what several individuals decided to do. Thats as stupid as saying I hate whatever country your from because it is your country of choice. You sir, are more useless as a person then this study is for the game industry. End rant I just have to say though the study got one thing right. There has to be more Womens basketball and Shuffleboard games. lol

Who sits around complains about this stuff? Really? Are you serious? Whoever has the time to do a study like this needs to get their priorities straight. I guess they didnt think about all the games that have CUSTOMIZABLE CHARACTERS. For every game someone can name with a white protagonist I can give you a game with a minority protagonist or atleast a side character. This is ridiculous, no wonder minorities think white people are all racist because some a-hole publishes studies like this.

Well first off I would say the reason the reason kids and the elderly aren't in games, is because violence is such a big part of the game industry now and shooting children in the face isn't exactly politically correct last time I checked. Yeah there is little reason why Nathan Drake couldn't be black or hispanic but since I'm not a racist, his race is inconsequential to me. Maybe the fact that the biggest icon in gaming is a short, fat. Italian plumber will make him feel better. Hell that even works for his next study on body types :P lol this wasn't a problem back in the days when all main characters were anthropromorphic animals i.e. Sonic, Gex, Donkey Kong

This is stupid. Most writers write themselves or some exaggeration thereof. Minorities/women/elderly aren't equally represented because they aren't the ones making the games.

The USC Professor that made this study has way too much time on his hands. When I'm playing a video game, I don't think to myself; "I really hope there are some elderly folks (lets say in Prototype) or minorities in any other type of game. Useless study.

People try to breathe racism into everything nowadays, don't they? We're trying so hard to be PC when we're already so much better than we used to be. It's like the opposite of racism, being nice to someone too much because of their colour and what are race did to them in the past. Also, I love the last sentence of this article, it made me laugh.

The thing about it is...nobody gives a damn when they are playing through a game. How many white dudes played through San Andreas and didn't feel completely immersed in the character of CJ? Probably not many. My CJ had a tricked out car and huge afro...and I felt like he was an accurate representation of myself at the time I played through the game.

Here's a clue to researchers----when playing a game, I don't really care what race my character is. I'm not opening a game and saying to myself, wow, the character is white, I feel bad. This is a case of someone who's got way too much time on his hands.
