Starfield And Redfall Delayed To 2023, Gameplay Deep Dives Coming "Soon"

Bethesda has officially pushed back the release dates for two of its biggest games to 2023.

122 Comments

Two major Bethesda games, Starfield and Redfall, have been delayed to 2023. Starfield originally had a release date of November 11 for PC and Xbox Series X|S, while Redfall's launch date had yet to be announced but was slated for this summer.

Specific new release dates for either game have not been shared yet, but they're both set to launch during the first half of 2023, meaning by the end of next June. Gameplay deep dives for both games are expected "soon."

"The teams at Arkane Austin and Bethesda Game Studios have incredible ambitions for their games, and we want to insure that you receive the best, most polished versions of them," Bethesda said in a statement announcing the delays. A follow-up from Arkane and Harvey Smith described Redfall as the studio's "most ambitious game yet," adding, "The team needs more time to bring the game to life."

Starfield's slip to 2023 is the more surprising development of the two, as back in June, Bethesda's Todd Howard said that he was positive that the game would avoid being delayed. "We're confident in the date," Howard said at the time. "Otherwise, we wouldn't be announcing it."

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer also recently tweeted that he'd met with Bethesda, so it's possible that the decision to delay the game was discussed at the company this week.

Even without Starfield and Redfall being headline acts for Xbox in 2022, they're likely bound to have a big presence at the upcoming Xbox and Bethesda Summer Games Showcase on June 12. Gameplay for either title has yet to be revealed, so the joint Xbox and Bethesda event would be a great platform to show off what players will be doing in each title. As noted above, Bethesda teased that "our first deep dive into the gameplay for Redfall and Starfield" is coming "soon."

Not too much is known about Arkane's Redfall at this point in time, although leaked images did suggest that the game will resemble a fusion between Borderlands-style loot-shooter action and vampire hunting. Starfield, meanwhile, is the next open-world RPG from the team behind Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3 and 4. The two games being pushed out of 2023 suddenly leaves a gap in Xbox's first-party lineup, though it remains to be seen how or if that will be filled.

I have seen a lot of concern online about Xbox management for some weird reason and I think this actually shows the improvement of management. This team is the same one that ditched kinect, bought 10 studios not counting Activision, created Game Pass and was the highest rated publisher on Metacritic for 2021. Delaying these games is the right move if the teams creating the games think its the right move. Period. If this year suffers so be it. If you want to garner the same reputation that Sony has with their first party you can't just force a game to come out.

@ggali09: I’ll bet we still see Starfield. Maybe not a massive live gameplay demo like Fallout 4’s E3 premier, but I’m guessing Starfield is close enough to show something, even with the delay.

These release dates have less precision than a blindfolded monkey throwing darts at a calendar. What’s even the point of them anymore?

I don't really mind next year for Starfield. Though it was my reason for buying a Series S last year. Glad there's my backlog of games to keep me busy.

Damn it! Not the news I wanted to wake up to this morning. Honestly i kinda thought Redfall would be delayed and not really surprised about Starfield but I did think Starfield had more of a chance of meeting its initial deadline. Oh well, I'm totally addicted to Halo Infinite right now anyway the last spartan standing (mini battle royal) mode is fantastic and keeping busy. Nice change of pace from the og modes. Plus campaign COOP should be soon which I'm dieing to play.

And looking forward to the Top Gun expansion to Microsoft Flight Sim.

Oh well we don't want another Cyberpunk situation do we? The ponies would in this case though lol.

How else are they gonna charge $70 for the game, if they release this year folks would still be expecting it at $60, so its just bad bussiness.

@mogan: In case you didnt hear, they paid 7 billions for bethesda, and am pretty sure that their goal is to recoup that sum somehow...

And why wouldnt they, Sony already charged 70 for horizon west. MS is just waiting till sony set the pacing and take the flak, by next year all AAA tittles will be costing that and plebs wont even flinch.

@mogan: Well.. didnt gran turismo also cost $70, and how much you "guess" god of war ragnarok is going to be priced at? Even Nintendo is going to launch Zelda next year at 70 as well.

But seeing as you moderate this forum for no charge at all, its no wonder you cant see the big picture. Maybe next year when you are paying (if you can afford it) for starfield and you look at the receipt it will come as no surprise the $70 as price tag.

@s1taz4a3l: Gran Turismo and God of War are Sony games, and Sony has been selling first party AAA for $70 since the start of the generation. Microsoft has been selling first party AAA for $60 since the Xbox 360 launched, and while I'm sure they will raise their prices eventually, I haven't heard anything to indicate it will be next year with Starfield. It could be but saying soright now is just a blind guess for the sake being cynical. Either way, when I do get Starfield, it'll most likely be via Game Pass, not by paying retail.

Also, please refrain from insulting other users (including mods).

@s1taz4a3l: "Even Nintendo is going to launch Zelda next year at 70 as well."

Where did this info come from please? Everywhere I see online that is taking preorders, (Amazon, Best Buy, etc), is taking them at $59.99USD.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo wouldn't have retailers take reserves at $59.99, and then tell everyone who pre-ordered, (or paid it off already), that now they have to shell out another $10 at release.

Unless you can share some proof to back up that claim, I'll assume it's made up.

@walbo:

What do you mean? Halo Infinite is a phenomenal shooter! It may have a content flow issue according to some folks but the gameplay is awesome and is what keeps me playing not new cosmetics or a battle pass. It would be icing on the cake if they nailed that part too of course but it's not a deal breaker for me like it is for some. Maybe I'm showing my age but I don't need tons of cosmetics in my games. As long as the gameplay is on point which it most definitely is I'm good!

@gamerbum: na to me personally it isint even a halo game. Its been well reported just how bad a state the game is in especially when it comes concurrent players. The game for me is a bare bones mess of a game that just dosent know which direction to take itself and the fact that they still cant even get co op to work in a halo game would be laughable if i didint like halo so much in the past.

@walbo:

Steam players have dwindled yes but Xbox player counts are healthy and you can’t say the gameplay is bad or it doesn’t feel like a Halo game that’s ludicrous and flat out wrong. Gameplay wise it’s phenomenal. It’s the amount of content that some folks are not happy with.

They’ve nailed the most important part the gameplay and that’s what matters most.

@gamerbum: hey man i wish i liked it i really do. I would give it ago again if like you say if the core gameplay has been fixed like hit boxes not working etc but im over the greedy, broken and bare bones multiplayer to be honast . A halo game for me is a great co op experience and a multiplayer where i can play a range a maps and modes and be able to customise my Spartans how i like without having to worry about paying for the colour blue lol. Il be back if they ever get co op campaign to work though as iv been holding off playing more than a couple of hours of it so i can play with my son as we have played all the others together in the good old days of halo.

Yeah, i had a feeling this was going to happen, but on the bright side, I would rather them take the delay time to make sure the game preforms the way it should, and the story is solid, then have a quick release on a piece of shit.

So I'm willing to wait patiently. Between PC/Switch/PS5 i have a rather large backlog.

This is the new status quo nowadays. Just don't even bother giving a date anymore. Release it when it's finished. Game devs are going to spend the next two years after release getting the game to where it should have been originally anyway.

@jaykobwerdnahs: And in the case of Bethesda, you mean the modders/customers working for their love of making things right, and bethesda gets a free workforce to take advantage of while they charge for the fixes via the creation club since the post launch team is non existent.

Totally expected this delay to happen for Starfield for the most part and most gamers like myself called it too. Release dates aren't always set & in stone and if this delay helps polish the game, I'm always supportive of delaying games for this purpose...especially since this is Bethesda we're talking about.
