Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake Is No Longer In Development - Report

The report comes after Sony recently removed the game's announcement trailer from YouTube and social media.

Embracer Group's troubled Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is reportedly no longer in active development, according to GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb.

In the latest episode of Grubb's video game news show Game Mess Mornings, Grubb definitively stated that the Knights of the Old Republic remake, once being handled by developer Aspyr Media but later announced to be a co-project between it and Saber Interactive, is not being worked on right now.

Now Playing: Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake Update | PlayStation Showcase 2021

"This game is not being worked on right now, full stop," Grubb said. "This game is not being worked on in any way, at any studio."

Grubb's statement comes after a report last year that stated the game had been delayed indefinitely following the firing of two lead developers at Aspyr working on the project. It was additionally reported that Saber Interactive was taking full control over development of the title. Though publisher Embracer has not confirmed the project has fully changed hands, it did state in August 2022 that one of the company's "AAA projects has transitioned to another studio within the group" in order to "ensure the quality bar is where we need it to be for the title."

A remake of BioWare's beloved 2003 Star Wars RPG for PlayStation 5 and PC was announced with a teaser trailer during a PlayStation Showcase in 2021, with Sony set to co-publish the title. Flash forward to September of this year, and Sony removed any mention of the title from its YouTube and social media channels, instantly sparking concern about the project's future. Sony has stated that it removed the trailer due to needing to "delist assets with licensed music when the licenses expire." That answer didn't exactly alleviate fan concerns, though.

Sony has not elaborated further but, according to Grubb, wants nothing to do with the project going forward. Grubb theorizes then that the only party that could potentially save the project would be Lucasfilm.

"The only reality of this game getting made is if Lucasfilm completely takes it over and does all the work themselves to spin it back up," Grubb said. "No way this game ever happens. That's my opinion right now."

When asked about the status of the Knights of the Old Republic remake during a recent financial presentation, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors said, "I notice that anything I say to this becomes a headline, so that is my only comment."

The Knights of the Old Republic remake isn't the first time Aspyr Media has encountered problems over its handling of a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game. Aspyr's remaster of Knights of the Old Republic II for Nintendo Switch initially promised to include much of the game's cut content as DLC. The studio later announced the restored content DLC would not be happening and instead offered those who purchased the game another free Star Wars game of their choosing. That sparked a class-action lawsuit against Aspyr, with disgruntled fans who purchased the game accusing the developer of false advertising. Aspyr has since stated it planned to release the DLC but was blocked from doing so by an unnamed third-party's objections.

Current approach to Star Wars- whatever the fans want, do the opposite. Seems like its really working out for them.

It's for the best. The remake would've been infested with woke inserts with questionable character presentations & designs. The story would've been butchered for a "modern audience."

I'm taking this as good news! The original is a masterpiece, not sure they could have replicated that today!

Probably for the best. They likely would have made Bastila the lead and Revan canonically female. At least we will always have the original.

So, the thing that NO ONE wants to say is probably this. LucasArts KILLED the project. Period. They didn't want anyone changing or redoing the original ideas and gameplay that was involved in the project. I could give 2 $hits if someone that was working on the project was "woke" or some bs. That's the world we live in. Love it or hate it, it's true. Still, I'm pretty sure LucasArts saw what was being written and redone and simply said, "NOPE". End of story. No more redux. Period.

@naomha1: Lucasfilm has been entirely reactionary after their products or other products by the creators they've hired reach the audience, not beforehand. They've been ridiculously hands-off beforehand.

@naomha1: It'd be Lucasfilm Games now (LucasArts is long gone), and I can't imagine the project would have even made it to announcement if they were anti-change or just didn't want a non-canon Star Wars product made. You would think the IP holder would be one of the first blessings you'd go looking for when putting together the project.

I imagine the turbulence and contraction at Embracer, and that there were so many spoons in the pot, is why the KotOR remake didn't get off the ground. Two developers, Sony co-publishing, and Disney getting a cut (I assume), probably didn't make for a very attractive investment for a publisher trying to be choosey about where they put their resources.

Probably numerous reasons why this happen. One of which is probably updating the combat for modern audiences. That was thing I was really curious on. No way they were gonna do the old school pause and play style of combat in a modern AAA game. But then they’d have to justify that change with something REALLY good or else they’d of pissed off the fans. I’m pretty sure this might of been at least a small part of the problem.

Good. I'm not really a Star Wars dude, but KoTOR was (and probably still is)the best Star Wars story since the original movies. Nothing drives me more bonkers than when people who never created anything of note, swoop in and think they know better than the original writer of the source material and proceed to ruin the property.

Still would love to see a 1:1 remake with new assets or something clearly made with the love and understanding of the source material, like the FF7 remake was. This wasn't going to be either.

Nothing good was going to come out of it anyways, especially with the writer being woke. The damage she'll do to the beloved characters is reason enough to cancel this remake.

I've said it a million times across not only the videogame industry, but across all life in general. There are far too many people getting paid far too much money to be terrible at what they do when it's not that hard to get it right. A remake of KOTOR, if done well, is a license to print money and a potential source of goodwill from millions of gamers at a time where Star Wars has probably never been more popular or had such a large fan base. If you can't get that to happen, everyone involved in the mess should be out of the industry. They won't, they'll continue to make millions, and we'll be stuck with whatever garbage they throw at us.

@azalis: The problem is that The Old Republic already butchered the storyline so there can't really be a direct KOTOR 3. It would have to be a fresh start and new story in the same setting.

@loveblanket: What? Like that hasn't been done before? GoW reboot. Tomb Raider reboot. Deus Ex reboot. We've rebooted so many story lines and pretended that the cannon before them never existed it isn't even funny. Kotor 3 would be amazing. We could just say SWTOR was a dream someone had and that's that.

This is why you shouldn't get excited over a CGI trailer. So much hype got built for a game that'll never come out.

Just a reminder the Mass Effect 5 trailer is now three years old, and Beyond Good and Evil 2 has broken the record of longest development with 15 years.

@gamingkoala: To be fair a new Mass Effect teaser just dropped the other day.

And I still have hope for Beyond Good and Evil 2. I mean they basically want to do what No Man Sky is doing but with no procedurally generated worlds and on a AAA level and that will take time (though only for a solar system, not a whole universe). No other game has done that. Yes, while technically the game was revealed in 2008 I'm pretty sure that was very early development and sometimes games are even put on hold because the tech isn't there yet. So maybe that is why it took so long before the reveal in 2017. Not to mention the game was intended for last gen consoles so when the new ones were revealed I'd bet they are designing the game now for them.

@sippio: I mean, Star Wars wasn't in a great place prior to Disney's buyout. Those prequels were dire. Disney was the great hope; the folks who made the MCU (good at time) were going to fix Star Wars! Instead, they ****ed it up just as hard as Lucas had, but Star Wars didn't become bad since 2012, it stayed bad.

Mostly. There's been some good Star Wars side content under Disney.

@mogan: Rogue One was the ONLY good Star Wars movie to come out of Disney ownership. Solo had some good moments (Kessel Run was awesome), but it's been pretty bad regardless for the most part.

@ironhorse89: I liked Solo alright, but Andor was great and Ahsoka was good. And Season 1 of The Mandalorian was pretty solid too. And even though Disney wasn't involved beyond licensing there've been a few good video and physical games for Star Wars since the buyout.

Star Wars hasn't all been terrible, but Disney did F'd up the most important movies and about half the TV shows.

@mogan: On the Tv side, I agree, Disney has done great. But the Video game category? Hell no. Lucas did way better in comparison. Only good star wars games in the last few years has been Jedi fallen order and survivor, so base game, ans sequel.

Back in the day we had Jedi outcast, jedi powerbattles, pod racer, the good battlefronts, Rogue Squadron trilogy, empire at war, etc. They had so many games and in like every genre. today we have 2 souslikes that are good, and a now good shooter, battlefront 2, but it took them years after release to make it good.

@itachi1255: We had a lot more Star Wars games when LucasArts was at the helm, but we also had a lot more bad Star Wars games. For every Jedi Knight, there was a Demolition, and a Bounty Hunter, and a Super Bombad Racing. For every KotOR, there was a Phantom Menace, a Battle for Naboo, and a Star Wars Kinect. Star Wars video games before Disney were like Warhammer/40k games now; loads of them, some of them good, and a lot of them bad.

Still, I do agree that lots of Star Wars games is still better than just a handful. Nowadays, if a Star Wars game is bad, you might not see another that year. I think the massive drop-off in quantity is a testament to how big a pain in the butt Disney is to work with.

@ironhorse89: I will admit, I liked Masters of Teras Kasi. I was young, and it was Star Wars. Even so, I knew it was a bad fighting game. I bought Tekken 3 at the same time, and the difference was obvious even to a kid.

Same with Rebel Assault; I'll always have a place in my heart for those games ... but they were barely games. : p
