Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake Coming To PS5/PC

Developer Aspyr is remaking BioWare's Star Wars RPG for PlayStation 5.

During PlayStation's September 2021 Showcase, developer Aspyr announced a remake for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The game got a very short teaser trailer as well, while a post-show interview described this as a "complete remake." It's headed to PS5 as a "console exclusive at launch," with a PC version also in the works.

Aspyr has already made a name for itself in the Star Wars universe for making modern-day ports of popular Star Wars games, like Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and Star Wars: Republic Commando. Knights of the Old Republic Remake, however, is the first full-blown remake being developed by the studio.

Now Playing: Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Rebulic Remake Teaser Trailer | PlayStation Showcase 2021

The trailer for the remake doesn't reveal what it looks like in comparison to the original game. We do get a pretty badass look at Darth Revan, a fan-favorite (though no longer canon) Star Wars character.

The original Knights of the Old Republic (first developed by BioWare) is considered by many to be one of the best (if not the best) Star Wars games of all time--we said as much in our round-up of 10 best Star Wars games. The game takes place long before the events of The Phantom Menace, and sees you explore a galaxy where a Sith armada is trying to crush the Republic.

Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic Remake is scheduled to launch for PS5 and PC.

@just1mohr: Sounds like Sony paid for a console exclusive launch. They aren't the publisher though, so I imagine it'll come to Xbox eventually.

Well this is going to be an agenda driven rewrite based on the writer who doesn't even like KOTOR and hates male star wars fans.

@jenovaschilld: But why wait for drama that might happen later, when we can manufacture our own drama today? : \

@mogan: Because throughout history prejudices in the media have always been destructive. It’s primitive. We’ve actually gone backwards since the 90’s.

@jenovaschilld: you probably don't know who Sam Maggs is.

She is the readhead getting interviewed in the clip bellow. She is basically a female, redhead version of Jack Thomson. She wrote the poor story of ME andromeda, and now she got hired for the remake of KOTOR.

@PETERAKO: 'virtual rape' is a far stretch, though in Halo I was brutally and frequently molested by many soldiers who lightly dropped their scrotums onto my head over and over again.... the pain.

Jack Thomson was a pos who really didn't even believe what he was selling, just using it as political campaign theatre and hocking some air time along with some books.

It is sad to hear that she was given the story as compared to ME Andromeda, hopefully her part will only be updating branching dialogue and keeping it as close to the original as possible. I just did a quick wiki and did not see her name as being a part of the team. So not to worried. , it takes a ton of idiots to frig a game up nowadays.

As far as ME Andromeda... there was a ton of problems with that game beyond just the story. I played this game and it was a mess technically, as it released very buggy along with slow patch roll outs. Plot was too slow and derivative, I also did not like the VO acting, maybe i was spoiled by the originals. The combat was too action and less RPG, and the side quests or missions were coma inducing, I was so disapointed. I blamed EA monetization influence more then any single person, as no game made today can be ruined by a single effort, just ask EA -they really work hard at it.

@chiyochan111: Just no. In the first 3 years of release, the game sold around 1.3 Million copies on XBOX. It didn't even reach 500,000 in that same time period on PC.

@thecupidstunts: Yep. I played on both. The PC version was distinctly better...as were pretty much all games back then. But that's what happens when you play a game on what is essentially a $3,000 console. Which is also why sales numbers will skew HEAVILY towards the XBox. Mom and Pop aren't going to spend that kind of cash for little Jr. to play video games...they will buy a $300 console instead.

Initially I was excited to see this announcement. Then I found out the lead writer is an activist and admitted KOTOR isn't her favorite Star Wars game. And the lead producer says "Remade for a modern audience. With necessary changes and updates."

@Heartagram_03: Best to tell people while we still can to play the original as it respects the source material. I suspected this garbage was going to happen since everyone nowadays is choosing to brute force current world problems into games when things don't go their way via social media hot takes. sigh

@Dark_sageX: All this says to me is: I don't like a controller.

As said already, KotOR was an Xbox console exclusive which PC gamers were begging to play on their home computer and it played just fine with a controller.

@gotrekfabian: That's what PC fanboys always do.

They b**** about a game not coming to PC. And beg like an annoying Stepchild for it to come on PC. And then when they finally do get it. They act like the PC version is the definitive version (Even if it runs like dog crap or gold). And that the series doesn't belong on console anymore. And anyone who picks the console version over the PC version. Is a peasant who knows nothing about true gaming. Like when people console versions of CoD, 007, Halo, Gears, RDR, SF, RE over the PC one.

And from the Sony event. I feel like they're going to do that with Uncharted 4. As if it never ran well on PS.

@illegal_peanut: I have no time for fanboys of any type, they constantly lie to themselves to the point that they believe what they make up in their own minds and then try to push it onto others.

I have a couple of friends IRL that would take one look at a console game and declare it as "a load of rubbish" simply because it wasn't a PC game. When looking at their computers they had poor set-ups that were only just capable of running the latest games at the time and it amazes me how many PC fanboys do the same thing and pretend that they have the latest CPU/GPU/RAM/monitor.

@gotrekfabian: That is like a lot of games, I have played over a few decades. Morrowinds Oblivion where someone had complaints of long load times, large game saves, and clipping during far of textures...... that is crazy who has time to notice something like that. When a game like that pulls you in so deep, it is like dating Emilia Clarke and complaining about her webbed toes the whole time.

KOTOR was created at a perfectly magical time, that would be hard to recreate in any other time in history. A young hungry studio, with talented SW fans who also happened to be huge D&D fans, who were able to purchase the SW license super cheap because SW games were at an all time low. This allowed most of the budget to actual go into the game then just the brandname.

@ice12tray: Funny thing is, I Played it on both PC and Xbox back in the day and the PC version actually had a lot of cut features that didn't make it to the Xbox. There's a quest to a hidden space station and this guy you save will sell you the best legendary weapons and armor in the game. Credits are redundant at the end on the Xbox version because there's not anything to buy, where as in the PC version your saving the credits to get the custom gear at the end.

@jenovaschilld: Yeah, I remember buying an OG Xbox for KOTOR and Fable back in the day. I bought it on PC later down the road because it had some big framerate dips on Xbox during fights, and I only discovered the cut content on PC after I started playing the game.

@march202002:Same, once upon a time the xbox was known for RPGs and JRPGs instead of FPS and bro games. With must have titles like KOTOR, FAble, Silver, KOTOR II, Jade Empire, and 360 titles like Blue dragon, Eternal Sonata, Lost Odyssey and so much more. It was a console whose library was taking risks, and hugely diverse. Sadly during the late 7th gen and all 8th gen an rpg exclusive was no where to be found.

9th gen, even if this is a playstation exclusive, who knows maybe rpgs can once again come back to the xbox -

@thecupidstunts: I think the said it was limited exclusivity, and if you take games like FF7R that has been out for almost 1 1/2 yrs and no PC or xbox yet, or Tomb raider for xbox that was 7 -8mnths or Death Stranding that also took a while... After a year or so and with price reductions you have saturated your buying base to a point, that you are not going to lose customers by sending it over to the other side.

Considering that Kotor was an original xbox, then took few months or more before PC and now is going to be a PS 'timed' exclusive in a similar way, yeah it is a shot across the bough. Same as MS buying Bethesda and possibly making the next Morrowind game exclusive.

Do not get me wrong, these are great things as platforms: PS, MS, Nin, steam, apple, etc, are throwing tons of money at publishers who ensure studios have the cash, freedom to create exclusives, is great for all gamers. Which ensures a healthy industry, quality, and competition.

When the next KOTOR R, comes out as a timed exclusive on the PS or PSNOW, whew, that would be big in the industry. A system seller. As we know, some people just have no patience.

@jenovaschilld: You make good points, (although if we're talking about "shots fired", I definitely wouldn't put KOTOR timed release on PS5 in the same league as MS acquiring Bethesda).

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 🙂

@thecupidstunts: No you are right, Bethesda publishing is huge, that is without a doubt one big acquirement and lets the gaming industry know, they are gonna compete this 9th gen. When that next Morrowind game come out as an xbox exclusive... wow the skies will open and the ground will shake.

Though one thing, Bethesda as a game publisher/dev has been putting out some ... not so good games lately, hope that is not a trend.
