Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake Coming To PS5/PC

Developer Aspyr is remaking BioWare's Star Wars RPG for PlayStation 5.

During PlayStation's September 2021 Showcase, developer Aspyr announced a remake for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The game got a very short teaser trailer as well, while a post-show interview described this as a "complete remake." It's headed to PS5 as a "console exclusive at launch," with a PC version also in the works.

Aspyr has already made a name for itself in the Star Wars universe for making modern-day ports of popular Star Wars games, like Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and Star Wars: Republic Commando. Knights of the Old Republic Remake, however, is the first full-blown remake being developed by the studio.

Now Playing: Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Rebulic Remake Teaser Trailer | PlayStation Showcase 2021

The trailer for the remake doesn't reveal what it looks like in comparison to the original game. We do get a pretty badass look at Darth Revan, a fan-favorite (though no longer canon) Star Wars character.

The original Knights of the Old Republic (first developed by BioWare) is considered by many to be one of the best (if not the best) Star Wars games of all time--we said as much in our round-up of 10 best Star Wars games. The game takes place long before the events of The Phantom Menace, and sees you explore a galaxy where a Sith armada is trying to crush the Republic.

Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic Remake is scheduled to launch for PS5 and PC.

"Remake" scares the hell out of me. That sounds like they intend to do more than update the graphics.

@Wraith3: I hope they do update more than the graphics. I've got all the nostalgia in the world for KotOR, but it's rough trying to play that game today. It pushed RPG design forward and was left behind by all the games it influenced. That's the hallmark of a true classic; it doesn't age well. If it did, that'd mean game design hadn't advanced.

@bloodbornelore: Good deal. Hope this turns out; BioWare's Old Republic setting is probably about the best (and most consistently good) Star Wars has been since the original trilogy.

@mogan: And she has vehemently expressed disdain towards the original. Which makes me wonder why she was brought on board.

@mogan: Nope. That’s who’s writing the script. I don’t think it’s a good deal at all, considering her previous work.

@mogan: Wow. There’s no need to call people crazy. Especially when I was just helping you out. Sam Maggs is the new writer of KOTOR. No need to take it out on me.

Edit: Regardless of how you feel about it, I for one don’t think it needs re-writing.

Are we still going to pretend like SW:TOR isn't 8 different "long-awaited" sequels, with expansions that aren't better than recent films? Cool.

You guys are kind of pathetic, SW Fans can never agree on anything, it's so toxic. Of course, @mogan Mogan, half of those storis in SWTOR can basically be single player games, nerdslayer already said this in his video -- half of those expansions easily could've been 3 different games or least 2 with 1 of them being a sequel. Doesn't matter, personal phases are a thing and SWOTR isn't likely going to be the only MMO nor is SW: Fallen Order going to be the only SP game we get. Remember the contract with EA isn't permanent anymore, other studios are making games.

Also you most of the user base on the game side is seeing at SWTOR the wrong way, need to look at the game as "Not KOTOR 3" and especially not "SWG 2", like it's insane, even for someone myself who already has KOTOR1/2 I know for a fact it isn't either. Sad truth is Disney is responsible for the splitting the userbase again for making the KOTOR/SW Rep Com games include SW Empire at War apart of their "Legends" philosophy I honestly hate canon v non-canon debates it is a waste of energy, ruins things and limits the potential of franchises overall... what's the point in KOTOR or even any Old Republic titles if it'll just be labeled non-canon?

@timthegem: Are you saying the class stories in SWTOR are or aren't better than the sequel trilogy?

@mogan: EP 1, 2, and 3 were trash. EP 4, 5 were amazing. Ep 6, 7, 8, 9 were also trash. So were all the spin off movies.

@r3gn4r: I agree. The class stories in SWTOR were better than 6 of the 9 numbered films, and they were MMO stories.

Eh, I hope this is a precursor to getting that long awaited sequel.
Played through this game enough times when it first came out, not sure if I'll be putting it high on my games list since it'll be a remake.

Will definitely be keeping an eye out for some freshly remade cinematics though lol

It's also been confirmed to be coming to PC. No mention of Xbox yet. It is not an exclusive.

@jeremyalexander: It’s just a timed exclusive. Probably 6 months to a year before it hits Xbox.

@blondie_82: I would wager 6 months instead of a year. Star Wars is a huuuugeeee IP that would sell everywhere, so Sony would have to shell out insane money for 1 year of exclusivity.

@restatbonfire:

Or a sequel.

The issue is, of course, how can we get the IP transferred away from the rotting corpse of Bioware and the malignant tumor of EA to someone who might take all that fantastic material and do something actually useful with it?

I mean, can we start a gofundme or something?

@restatbonfire: That'll probably never happen. Great game, but it sold like garbage. It might do better today but I doubt a company run like EA would take a risk on it. Remember EA is a company that's buried some of the best game companies and IP's in history.

No retract that statement, garbage in the eyes of EA who continues to ruin what we like. Jade Empire was fine: combat, story, interesting repeatability... from an era before everything went into subscriptions and mtx.

The gameplay is one of the biggest appeals of KOTOR to me, so I'm not really excited about a remake at this time. I just know they'll want to remake the gameplay into something like Jedi Outcast or Force Unleashed, or Fallen Order.

@WarGreymon77: I hope they do. The only thing I didn't like about the originals was that garbage combat system. Star Wars is action, not some wank WOW style press buttons and watch garbge.

*stunned silence*

Okay, now that I've gotten by my initial reaction to the confirmation that my second favourite game of all time is getting remade, there are a few things I'd like to know: which EA studio is doing it, which engine is being used to make the game, is it a faithful remake, will it restore the cut content, and is this an exclusive (doubt it)?

@Barighm: Apparently it is being made by the Aspyr studio. I'm only going on the rumour/leaked info from April mind.

@WarGreymon77: OH RIGHT! I just remembered. The original rumour suggested it's NOT an EA studio doing the game. Looks like Disney is going back to more internal development.
