Star Wars: Han Solo Movie Starts Shooting, Working Title Revealed

Star Wars: Red Cup continues the trend of strange working titles.

Ahead of its planned release in 2018, the Han Solo Star Wars spinoff movie has started shooting, director Chris Miller has revealed. Miller posted a picture on Twitter today of the first take from shooting.

He captioned the photo, "Han First Shot," a playful reference to the never-ending back-and-forth about whether it was Han or Greedo who shot first (it was Han) in the 1977 original.

The image also reveals the movie's working title, Star Wars: Red Cup. This follows in the tradition of strange titles for other Star Wars films during production. The Last Jedi was known as Space Bear during filming, while Return of the Jedi was famously shot under the title Blue Harvest.

You can also see Bradford Young's name on the clapperboard. He is the cinematographer for the movie, following his highly praised work in the same role on Arrival.

Alden Ehrenreich plays Han Solo in the movie, alongside Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has an unspecified role in the movie, while Hunger Games' Woody Harrelson plays a mentor character to Solo.

The film takes place during the "early scoundrel days" of Solo and Calrissian, before 1977's A New Hope. It is directed by Miller and Phil Lord, who worked together on the celebrated Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street.

The next Star Wars movie is The Last Jedi, which comes to theaters in December. For more on that movie, check out GameSpot's breakdown of what the mysterious title might mean.

Isn't the point of giving these projects code names to help keep them secret while they're being made?

I'm a huge fan of Star Wars but they'll end up quickly saturating the market if they keep making these types of movies. People WILL get fed up of it, I don't care if its Star Wars, people will burn out from all the nostalgia BS being thrown at them on a yearly basis. There was no need to make a Han Solo movie, its just simply a cash in. Just like the rumoured Boba Fett movie. We don't need it.

They need to expand the universe and stop shrinking it because it feels safe. Star Wars is such a huge sandbox of potential stories that it begs to have talented creative minds working on it. It's why I loved it so much growing up, I'd dream of all the other places, characters and battles we never saw in the movies.

We've had four movies with Han Solo, and as cool as he is, he's a one dimensional character, you can't change him or develop him because you'll fundamentally change him. All this movie will be is some young guy pretending to be Harrison Ford and it'll have the same old tired, cliché BS story for mindless morons to fawn over and claim its brilliant due to all the fancy CGI and endless cameos and fanservice. To those thinking it was the same for Ewan McGregor playing Obi Wan - no it isn't, its completely different. For all the flack Lucas gets for the Prequels, at least he told a new story, at least he went forward in a new direction. Because of this we got new and valid Obi Wan content because it was telling something we had no idea about. This Han Solo movie is about nothing but HIM and things we already know about i.e. we'll see him meeting Chewie, winning the Millennium Falcon, the Kessel Run, run in with Boba Fett and Jabba and smuggling around the Empire. All things the original trilogy already told us about and established. We don't NEED someone else's interpretation of the literal steps of these events, our imagination, four movies knowing Han and the aesthetics of the originals already gave us enough to know how it went.

This will be the first Star Wars movie I won't watch and from listening to what's coming out of Disney, it won't be the last.

@tidus_ff: People might burn out and stop watching them, but Disney's going to make a whooole lot of money before that happens.

This isn't really that strange a working title. Red Cup = Solo Cup.
