STALKER 2 Update Teases New Art, Music, And Twitter Account

"Time's money, get talking."

There isn't much to say about STALKER 2 at this point, to be honest. But the fact that the game's official website has been updated with new key art and music is enough for fans, like myself, to get hyped up. In addition, the project launched its own Twitter account (@stalker_thegame) which it says will be used to share news and "interesting content" for the franchise. As for the music that plays on the site, it's a three minute(ish) creepy, foreboding ambient track that fits the series' often terrifying post-apocalyptic atmosphere.

STALKER 2 was revealed to be in the works when the site went live back in May of last year--at the time, it simply featured the game's title painted onto a concrete background with the number "2021" clearly implying that the game won't be around until then. The team behind the original entries, GSC Game World, is heading up STALKER 2 as the company's own site says it is currently in development.

Now Playing: House of Horrors - S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

GSC Game World has been through a lot since releasing the original STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl and the two follow-ups Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat. Plans for a full sequel began in 2010 with the hopes of hitting a 2012 release, but was eventually cancelled. The studio remained relatively quiet, but released the strategy game Cossacks 3 in 2016.

For those unfamiliar with STALKER, it's a first-person shooter and survival horror series loosely based on the Russian novel Roadside Picnic and movie Stalker (1979). It's set in an alternate reality where another nuclear disaster hit the Russian nuclear zone of Chernobyl. The story takes supernatural turns as you uncover the mysteries of the Nuclear Exclusion Zone alongside other stalkers, who are rogue hunters and scavengers in "The Zone." STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl was one of the best games of its time despite having a lot of technical bugs; you can read more about it in our list of great games from 2007.

Holy hell, I totally missed this announcement. I pretty much gave up on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series as the few unofficial projects seemed to be all we would ever get, but this is just awesome.

I own all three of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games and yet, there they sit, within arms reach on my shelf, STILL in the plastic I bought them in, mocking me...

@Brakkyn: That first time I came face to face with a bloodsucker..... I pissed my pants. He came out of complete darkness with yellow eyes and big claws swiping at me in a rusty old powerplant close to Pripyat. Scary moment !! That's STALKER for you. I suggest you play those games.

I loved STALKER so much. The bugs sucked and my pc could barley handle it but I loved it. At one point I would just hang out with the guy playing guitar in their little circle around the fire and just sit there enjoying the atmosphere. Still waiting for that experience again. Man, if they put ray tracing in that game....anyways, RT or not I'm in!

Metro: Exodus, while a good game, still didn't scratch the STALKER itch for me sufficiently, despite capturing some of the basic atmosphere (including some anomalies). Can't wait for another genuine STALKER game.

@mdinger: Well I agree. However, the METRO games are NOT meant to be like the S.T.A.L.K.E.R ones. The setting is the only thing quite similar in that both are in nuclear wastelands filled with mutants, enemy factions etc. But METRO was always meant to be a quick paced action shooter unlike the 'survivalist' traits of STALKER where your guns cannot save you always and you constantly have to kill other stalkers/faction npcs to scavenge ammo, rations, artifacts etc. So STALKER is hardcore in every way, psychologically challenging you to explore the unknown-danger filled radiated wilderness around the Chernobyl NPP. METRO gives a false sense of open world when it's really not (which isn't a bad thing for it). There are many other differences too.

@mdinger: I agree. I didn't think it was a bad game, but not close to STALKER as far as atmosphere.

@mdinger: I've been considering picking up Exodus because of that. I'm quite the S.T.A.L.K.E.R fan! But from what I can gather Exodus is not so much similar as I would like it to be.

@ziltoid: It really isn't. But still, if you're into atmospheric Russian nuclear disaster settings, the Metro games deliver the goods imo. They're more CoD (Metro 2033 and Last Light) and Far Cry (Metro: Exodus) than STALKER as far as minute to minute gameplay is concerned (i.e. there are not a lot of RPG elements).

BTW, I scribbled a shortish review for Exodus: https://www.gamespot.com/metro-exodus/user-reviews/2200-12783177/

I was psychologically affected playing the Stalker games. So immersive, realistic, TOUGH games those. Not for your average Joe fps gamer.

The original is genuinely one of the best games I've ever played; an unforgettable, atmospheric behemoth like nothing else. I hope this sequel is the real deal and not some multiplayer-only garbage using the name to trick people.

The original soundtrack is also quite something:
