Square Enix Answers Final Fantasy 15 Fan Questions

Final Fantasy XV is finally launching this year.

Final Fantasy XV developers have answered a string of fan questions about the long-in-development RPG, which will finally be released later this year on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

No Caption Provided

Three fan-submitted questions were answered today in the Final Fantasy forums. The questions centered around topics like difficulty options, how much of the game's major cities can be explored, and warp abilities.

You can see the questions and Square Enix's responses below.

Final Fantasy XV is scheduled to launch this year for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The game's release date, as well as the first "real" footage of the game, will be revealed sometime in March.

You won't have to wait until then for more details, however, as the next Active Time Report broadcast is scheduled for later this month.

WILL LARGE BUILDINGS HAVE MULTIPLE WARP POINTS TO ALLOW NOCTIS TO SCALE AND EXPLORE ROOFTOPS?

"Why of course they will!" lead level designer Terada Takefumi said. "The warp ability that lets you teleport instantly to high up locations is a vital part of FFXV’s battle system. The ability to use multiple warp points in a strategic manner is especially prevalent in the game’s large scale battles over urban terrain. It is not just the buildings though, and we have also created exciting aerial battles with flying foes and gigantic boss enemies, so watch out for those."

HOW MUCH OF THE BIG CITIES LIKE ALTISSIA/INSOMNIA WILL WE BE ABLE TO EXPLORE?

"I can tell everyone a little about Altissia at this time. Altissia has many and varied locations, such as multiple cafes, ship-bourne market places and parks etc. The city is of a considerable scale, to the extent that even the developers sometimes get lost there!" Final Fantasy XV planner Ishikawa Tomonori said. "The player is free to take a leisurely walk around the complex maze of streets, or ride the gondola to see the sights and there is also added enjoyment to be had looking for restaurants to visit! You are bound to encounter some unique characters when exploring the city streets. So we have created lots of different things to enjoy in Altissia and hope everyone is looking forward to visiting!"

HOW WILL THE DIFFICULTY MODES COMPARE IN TERMS OF XP GAIN, ENEMY STATS, DAMAGE AND A.I?

"The equivalent to difficulty level settings in FFXV is a system where you can switch between different battle modes," lead game designer Takizawa Masahi said. "By having this ability to switch modes, we want to make it so that both players who like action oriented, technical gameplay and also those who want to fight at a slower, more relaxed pace can all enjoy the combat in their own style. This switching system is a key part of the gameplay that we decided to introduce based on the feedback we received from the Episode Duscae demo. We will go into more detail about the system closer to the game's launch so stay tuned for more information."

Why does it seem like that last question was completely dodgy?

@imajinn: Because according to the answer there are no difficulty settings, just two different modes like there were in Xcom Apocalypse (only game i can think of that had a turn based and a real time mode that you could switch between on mission basis)

So yeah, its their way of saying "sorry, no difficulty settings, just casual turn based fanboy, and salty stream monster modes"

@jcove2050:

What needs explaining? Those are names you'd expect out a thirteen year old's brainstorming session:

"Hmm...I need some cool-sounding names for my characters. Noctis, Ignis, Gladio, Prompto...What else? Nephroth...Crimzon...Mortalis....Yeah those sound BADASS!"

I'd rather play ff with mixed genders and fictional races instead of forcing us to play an all "pretty boy" group

@mxero: This is a very tired topic and frankly people need to get over it considering there is is still very little we know about the game. They have already said that women will play a huge role in the story and some even as villains. You really don't have much ground in this argument, nor do you have any clue as to whether or not there will be other fictional races. Don't give up on it before it even exists. Play the game, if you don't like it fine. At least make an educated decision, you wont have that until you play it. The demo doesn't count as that was to showcase specific aspects of the game not the story.

Why don't we just "not buy it?" I can just not buy the game, not my loss.

@bc2999: It is a loss because for all you know you will be missing out on an amazing experience. Sure it could also be a horrible experience but hearing how much influence FFVI had during the creation of it, I am rather intrigued and can't imagine it being bad. FFVI was by far, one of the best Final Fantasy's ever created. I have been such a huge fan of the series since FF1, I have played through every single one of the core games that has come stateside, I love the stories and how unique yet familiar each one is. I can't stand seeing people give up on these games before they even give it a chance, for some reason I have a we bit of passion about this. I apologize for sounding so short, but I cringe when some of these trivial details become a reason for not checking the game out or "giving up" as some people have done. Yeah I know it is a matter of opinion and taste, but if you like Final Fantasy or JRPG's in general, there is really no reason not to at least look into it.

I find people get so caught up in being negative about this series, only because it is so popular, they shield themselves from the positives and refuse to look back. I imagine Square-Enix staff put so much love and passion into the Final Fantasy games, they aren't afraid to try new things, sure some of their ideas may not work out as they imagined but they still try so hard in giving us an amazing new world, intriguing, well rounded, characters and a fantastic new story with each game. I don't see other similar games getting so much flak,

I can't remember who it was, one of the longtime directors of the series. He did an interview regarding FFVIII, Seeing this game come to life and especially the cut scene of when the characters first took off into the sunset with their new airship. This scene put him in tears because it was exactly as he imagined. That is passion. Granted FFVIII wasn't the most popular of the series to the fans but to see the passion he had for that game triggered a realization in me that the games are more then just that to their creators. That passion is why the series is so great. That is why I am so passionate when people talk horribly about Final Fantasy. "End soap box. :)"

@jcove2050: "This scene put him in tears because it was exactly as he imagined."

I think this is what separates the two groups. There's the group that likes to play a good JRPG game, and the group that is 100% interested in the story and just makes up apologizes for the bad game play. The best FF I've played in a decade is Final Fantasy Record Keeper on iPhone, it is by far the most true-to-source of all of the games out right now. Everytime I play, I want to jump on XIII because of how good it seems, only to be disappointed by the garbage combat system again.

If this series wants to be about story telling, it needs to innovate like the Witcher 3 did. So many options, fully voice acted, dialogue with numerous characters. In contrast to FF XIII, you walk in a line, mashing the A button for combat, and there is no choice. FF is the only game series where changing your equipment does not change the appearance in game.

All we have now is a series that entirely focuses on graphics and story telling elements (although the story itself is poorly written, and generally makes no sense), and some poorly executed hybrid combat system that they just can't get right.

IMHO, they should ditch all this emo wifu crap and just make go back to their roots, like Megaman did. Just give these bad games a new name and their own series, and leave the FF brand alone. There wouldn't be any arguments at that point. And truthfully, as a long time FF fan, I am not missing out. Since X, I've pretty much lost interest in this series. I certainly follow the news in hope that something will catch my eye, but this game is pure dud material. It's a half-ass attempt to rebrand a bad FF XIII sequel, and nothing more.

At least for older fans like me, what made Final Fantasy good at the time is not reflected in the newer games. They are not challenging or fun.

He doesn't have ground in this argument? It's a tired topic? That's hilarious. Easily one of the biggest (and most widely acknowledged) criticisms of the franchise over the last 10 years has been its positively dreadful character design. If I didn't know better, I'd guess that Tetsuya was TRYING to design annoying, idiotic and unlikable characters.

By the way, who are you to decide who's argument has ground? I could tell from early footage that I wanted nothing to do with the game. I have ZERO interest in spending hours watching a band of overly effeminate try-hards doing everything they can to look cool.

It's a shame, because most of us here criticizing still have a soft spot for the franchise...as it was.

@Abberon: FF characters are well known and loved. Look up the result of the latest survey about FF XV characters likability. The main characters design got 8.5 out of 10 in the Global Breakdown... so yeah. Don't mistake your personal preference with facts. And as I said, The four main characters have different deign philosophy.

Obviously you don't know much about polling or statistics. Maybe consider the audience for the demo and how they might not be very representative of the intended player base.

@Abberon: Obviously you don't know how to accept facts. this polling is obliviously voted by the people who are interested in the franchise. They ARE the target audience. We are talking about global audience not just one country. Type-0 (the demo came with it) sold over 1 million in one month, A sizable player base got access to vote so the result is a strong evidence. What do you have to present as evidence other than a loud voice and "might" ?

Your "facts" suck. You're polling an audience that would give positive feedback if the main characters were vampires that glitter in daylight. It's like asking 15 year old Bieber superfans to give him feedback on a new single he's planning to release.

Go back and reconsider:
A) Who ran the survey

and

B) Who took the survey

@Abberon: It is the official survey by SE, There were article about it on every major site including Gamespot. So the audience that participated is from all over the world, there is a breakdown for every major region. The survey reflects the opinion of the TARGET AUDIENCE who are interested in FF in general. It the only opinion that really matters to SE.
You need to accept the fact that your own preference does not equal a universal fact. You simply don't like the designs and that is fine, That how opinions works.

It's the official survey (by SE), surveying the most dedicated and eager portion of their fan base. Given that the game developer ran the survey and its results in-house, there was exactly ZERO chance that the published outcome would have been remotely negative. That, of course, ignores the fact that they were surveying a particularly friendly audience in the more dedicated and eager FF fan base. These are the clowns that buy games like Dissidia and rave about how awesome they are.

@Abberon: It's the official survey (by SE) ... Which was widespread and could be found on every major gaming website... for a demo and a game that sold over a Million in just one month. How is that "particularly friendly audience". That is a significant part of the audience itself.

Running in cycles, aren't we? So, the fans of FF like the character designs of FF. The survey is a strong evidence to measure what the fans think. You have ZERO evidence to support your words. Just speculations and wishful thinking without any foundation while keep calling people names because they don't agree with you. xD

Have a good life, sir.

You have zero evidence yourself, goof.

We are talking about a 100% subjective topic (in case you were confused), but if you think a non-third party survey of ultimately forgiving super-fans is worth ANYTHING, there's really nothing else to say. I mean, this is literally the most worthless type of survey you could possibly publish. It's like surveying your parents and close family members on how "cool" you are.

Okay pal, you're mom said you're cool. Evidence.

@Abberon: What part of a "widespread" you don't understand? If all of FF fans like something does than make their opinion invalid because they are fans? lol. They weren't born fans you know. It is the things that they like about FF that made them fans in the first place. Simple logic. You have it backward to suit your agenda.

SE were looking for feedback to improve things and it turns out that the characters are liked by many people on a global scale. surveying my parents is not enough data to come to conclusion, however surveying the whole region would be excellent indication of how cool I am. If most think I'm cool then I'm simply that cool. no one has the right to say that their opinion is invalid because they are fans (of me xD) especially if that person can't see beyond his nose. You really should educate yourself in sociology instead of you conspiracy theories.

No need to walk the path of immaturity, it doesn't help your case. Nothing wrong in being in being a part minority who think it is cool to hate of FF characters. But again all you have to offer is a loud voice. I don't even know why you are angry xD

Widespread? Your sample sucks. I'll forgive you for not knowing anything about marketing or statistics, but the people who filled out the survey are not representative of the Final Fantasy fan base. They are PART of the fan base, and a relatively small (but exceptionally dedicated) one at that.

The OVERWHELMING majority of Final Fantasy fans did not play this demo. The criticism of the character design is EVERYWHERE. Do a 30 second Google search if you don't believe me. Heck just read through this thread. FFXV's cast been mocked and ridiculed globally (apparently that matters to you).

It's not just this game either. Just look at FF XIII's sequels if you need any indication of how enamored people have been with Tetsuya's emo brand. XIII-2 couldn't even retain HALF the people who bought the original and practically nobody bought the finale in that abortion of a trilogy.

@Abberon: Getting tired of this honestly.

1. They are not "exceptionally dedicated" they bought FF Type-0 which is a new game in the west. which sold over a million in on month. Like any other FF game.

2. Yes the majority of the base did not take a part of it but a sizable part did. It is a very good indication and there is absolutely no reason to ignore the results expect if you are based.

3. I can literally find a criticism about every single thing, 100 persons ( for example) can make a lot of noise you know. and I can find a lot of praise too. Isn't freedom of speech great?. That why surveys exist.. to measure things in a mature and reasonable manner, Counting comments and posts here and there is laughable to be honest.

4. Direct sequels always sell much less than the main games. XIII was criticized for a lot of thing but it had a different team behind it, nobody asked for a sequel. So yes it sold less. I hope you know the XIII is the forth best selling in the franchise history though.

@amubhervx:

The overwhelming majority of FF fans didn't even consider buying Type-O. Those that did are the super-fans that buy nearly every title and rave about them. All you need to do is look at Dissidia (which sold over 2M) to see that these sorts of fans will buy absolute trash and call it wondrous as long as it has FF in the title.

People will only eat crap for so long though. FF XIII was criticized because it was a lousy FF game. It sold well because it had the FF name on it and people believed in it just for that (myself included). Most people didn't buy the sequel because the first one sucked. Almost nobody bought the third because people are smart enough to stay clear after being burned twice. That it was a sequel had little to do with it. Have you ever heard of Mass Effect, or any of the other numbered franchises that consistently release blockbusters? Don't let facts get in the way of your nattering.

Honestly though, if you think that a marketing survey of a game demo run and then published solely by that game's developer is worth anything, you're not worth talking to. The GIGANTIC conflict of interest, total lack of transparency and then brutally biased survey sample are all elements that (by themselves) would academically disqualify the results. Put all three together and it's just laughable. These are the facts you're trying to peddle and defend here. It's embarrassing.

@Abberon: Only assumptions about Type-0. No objective basis as expected. Dissidia is another genre completely, Type-0 is an rpg that appeal to the usual fans... world map, random encounters, multiple characters and so on.

XIII was a disappointment for me too. Thankfully XV is taking a totally different direction, which is why I'm exited. X-2 also sold much less than X. People in general expect new things and experiences from every FF. It is in the nature of the franchise. But yeah. XIII didn't deliver....

You don't get it, do you? Surveys are made for a reason. SE lately have been interesting in getting feedback from the audience. And they addressed many of the criticism about the demo like the targeting system. They improved. If the characters were unloved SE have no reason not to change their design philosophy ever since FF VII. Why wouldn't they?

And That would be it xD

Like I said, if you think the published findings of that survey have any worth/reliability whatsoever, you're a lost cause. Yours is not a mind worth engaging.

You'd have to try pretty hard to find a more biased sample. You'd have to look far for a less reliable survey host. If you can't wrap your head around that, I just feel bad for you.

Anyways, I have no idea why is the shallow point is being brought up in every single article about the game. It must be THAT good seeing that there is no objective criticism for it.

You're correct to a degree, but it's a little naive to think that visual appeal does not play a large part in the experience. I would go so far as to say that I couldn't care less how well this game ends up being written. I know that won't be the case, since Square hasn't written even a semi-decent story in over 10 years , but even if it was, I'd have trouble watching it play out with this girl-boy cast.

@Abberon: That is a little close minded in my opinion, to let the subjective factor covers the potential of the characters by that much. However, the cast, even though is all males, they are different and varied. Ignis Gladio for example are designed like what you would expect in any other game. Noctis is the usual "cool" and quite character, kinda looks like Cloud in a way, which is one of the most iconic characters in the industry. Not really girly, nothing wrong in being pretty xD

Prompto is obviously the one who intended to be like Riku in FFX.

It's not close minded. It's a video game. Everything about everyone's opinions is subjective. We all have a ton of different things we can spend money and time on so why would we waste either on a product that we know we're going to hate looking at the whole time? If the franchise had managed to pull off a non-retarded story in the last 10 years, what you're saying would hold more water, but since it hasn't, and since it clearly invests primarily in visuals first, everything else after, your comments are coming off a little ironic.

As for a varied cast, excuse me while I roll my eyes at the descriptions you're giving. You're basically confirming everything that myself and others hate about FF character design over the last 10 years. They're not characters. They're walking clichés and stereotypes. Everything about the character design, from outfits, outlooks and attitudes, is desperately chasing cool-factor. Trying THAT hard is never cool though. It's just sad.

@Abberon: Evey design can be labeled cliché and stereotype these days, including Western RPG and so on. That is not stopping them from being good and memorable characters as they grow and develop through the game. You are not giving an objective reasoning. As I said first, All male party is just a different approach, and should be taken just like that, a different approach. jumping to conclusion already is sad. To each his own I guess :-)

An all male party is fine. An all boy-band party with names like Noctis and Gladio is just retarded. Sorry. If you like fanfiction written by 13-year old boys, I can understand why you might think this type of trash is compelling. I'll assume that's the case and leave it at that.

@Abberon: I simply think the is a potential to it beyond the shallow way you look at it. There is potential for these characters to grow and developed. They suffer a huge burden but they still laugh and tell jokes while you are playing. Young men being young. You can't look beyond your own personal preference... which is sad imo.

There may very well be potential. They may actually be interesting an compelling characters. Unfortunately, Square is following up on over a decade of laughably bad character design so there's not a lot of credibility left for them to get the benefit of the doubt. When they've been giving us horribly written characters for over 10 years and when the upcoming batch looks similarly retarded, please forgive us if we assume we're getting more of the same.

From a writing and design perspective, these characters just SCREAM at us about how desperately hard Tetsuya is trying to make these guys look cool. By appearances, it's obnoxiously juvenile, try-hard fan-fiction fluff.

@Abberon: They are designed to look cool. OK. I agree. What was the problem again?

@amubhervx:

Because they're trying way too hard and as a result they're failing miserably at it. Instead of actually designing interesting, multi-faceted characters that we can actually empathize with, we end up with Tetsuya's caricatures - all style, no substance. It's desperate, phony stuff that most people can spot a mile away and usually outgrow by the time they're 15.

@Abberon:We? so all the people at 15 think the same? This is getting hilarious.

@amubhervx:

Not as ridiculous as you quoting Stephen Hawking in a 100% subjective debate about video game design. I mean...the irony of it is almost poetic.

@Abberon: Subjective, yet you have the right to include those who are over 15 with you, as if it was some kind of fact.... poetic indeed xD

Ai, all these teases. Can't wait for the ATR this month. I've been wanting to know more about the Niflheim Empire for ages. Still, nice to know they're allowing us to switch to a more leisurely battle style, AND giving us something like those scenes from the earliest trailers where Noctis was flashing around like... I' don't actually have a comparison to make.

The real questions asked should be are they a boy band or not, and if they're not why do they look and dress like one? The game in its current state looks pretty dull, it's just you wondering around an open world with nothing in it but miles of open land and random mini games like fishing...

This is what 30 hours of the game will be.

@zaku101: A video clearly said "Driving Gameplay", intended for showing... you know... driving. You clearly hasn't played the demo, tons of things to do and enemies to fight.

All I can say is thank you for the ability to switch battle modes as the combat in the FFXV demo was truly dreadful. Hopefully they changed it to a more kingdom hearts type battle system.

Can we use all 4 characters? Noctis is cool but it would feel so much more like Final Fantasy if we can switch players by a click of a button(similar to FF12 or Dragon Age). So that's my biggest question since Episode Duscae, can we play as Ignis or Gladio or Prompto???
