Square Enix Answers Final Fantasy 15 Fan Questions

Final Fantasy XV is finally launching this year.

Final Fantasy XV developers have answered a string of fan questions about the long-in-development RPG, which will finally be released later this year on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

No Caption Provided

Three fan-submitted questions were answered today in the Final Fantasy forums. The questions centered around topics like difficulty options, how much of the game's major cities can be explored, and warp abilities.

You can see the questions and Square Enix's responses below.

Final Fantasy XV is scheduled to launch this year for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The game's release date, as well as the first "real" footage of the game, will be revealed sometime in March.

You won't have to wait until then for more details, however, as the next Active Time Report broadcast is scheduled for later this month.

WILL LARGE BUILDINGS HAVE MULTIPLE WARP POINTS TO ALLOW NOCTIS TO SCALE AND EXPLORE ROOFTOPS?

"Why of course they will!" lead level designer Terada Takefumi said. "The warp ability that lets you teleport instantly to high up locations is a vital part of FFXV’s battle system. The ability to use multiple warp points in a strategic manner is especially prevalent in the game’s large scale battles over urban terrain. It is not just the buildings though, and we have also created exciting aerial battles with flying foes and gigantic boss enemies, so watch out for those."

HOW MUCH OF THE BIG CITIES LIKE ALTISSIA/INSOMNIA WILL WE BE ABLE TO EXPLORE?

"I can tell everyone a little about Altissia at this time. Altissia has many and varied locations, such as multiple cafes, ship-bourne market places and parks etc. The city is of a considerable scale, to the extent that even the developers sometimes get lost there!" Final Fantasy XV planner Ishikawa Tomonori said. "The player is free to take a leisurely walk around the complex maze of streets, or ride the gondola to see the sights and there is also added enjoyment to be had looking for restaurants to visit! You are bound to encounter some unique characters when exploring the city streets. So we have created lots of different things to enjoy in Altissia and hope everyone is looking forward to visiting!"

HOW WILL THE DIFFICULTY MODES COMPARE IN TERMS OF XP GAIN, ENEMY STATS, DAMAGE AND A.I?

"The equivalent to difficulty level settings in FFXV is a system where you can switch between different battle modes," lead game designer Takizawa Masahi said. "By having this ability to switch modes, we want to make it so that both players who like action oriented, technical gameplay and also those who want to fight at a slower, more relaxed pace can all enjoy the combat in their own style. This switching system is a key part of the gameplay that we decided to introduce based on the feedback we received from the Episode Duscae demo. We will go into more detail about the system closer to the game's launch so stay tuned for more information."

Squeenix, please release on PC also. I'm still picking it up on the PS4 regardless but this game deserves a PC version so it can be experienced in all it's glory.

I'm afraid the game will be compromised solely because it had to come out on XONE as well.

@Ripper_TV: I'm afraid the game will be compromised because Square Enix is still the dev...this company hasn't developed a good game in more than a decade...don't worry though, Sony is the home of jRPGs...thank god :)

@Daelusca: Well that's a lie. SE made plenty good games / JRPGs in the last ten years. Most of which were on handheld such as the DS.

@Daelusca: Well, Final Fantasy 14 A Realm Reborn is considered very good. Off the top of my head Life Is Strange is another game that has been well received.

@nunyabee: FF14 is junk. Life is Strange is a good game, but was not developed by Square, rather by a French company, Dontnod; Square was the publisher only.

@Ripper_TV: Nah. Not in terms of the games vision and what it sets out to do. Graphically the game will be compromised but honestly I think that goes for both platforms. When I played the beta the only thing I could think of was that this game deserves a PC release to be experienced in all it's glory. It definitely pushes the boundaries of what both consoles can do and you can tell Squeenix held back some.

@LadyAika: I'm hoping. This game deserves a PC release. I was stunned by it's visuals on the PS4 I'd love to see how much better it will look on a PC running at a smoother framerate.

My question would be: How difficult was it to find a balance between its realistic elements and the world's fantasy-based lore (whether it's been removed from FNC or not)?

You guys could have asked more interesting questions, like, why did this game take as long to make as Final Fantasies 2 through 7 combined?

@lostn: Well, to be fair, the development for this particular game is actually closer to 4 years. They had halted development (or something like that) on Versus 13, and then restarted development completely on FF15 in 2012.

@nunyabee: Still has the same characters and setting, so I wouldn't call it restarting completely. They don't get a pass for putting the game on hold. If they had to lend their hand to another game, it means that other game took even more man hours to make than everyone thought. The failure was just shifted from one game to another, but still a failure nonetheless.

@lostn: Why would they? The tale of FFXV's development is out there. Basically it amounts to stretched staff due to the development of simultaneous projects at multiple points plus a loss of the original director, lack of a solid concept for the game for the first few years, a platform change and as a consequence an engine change, re-evaluating the game's concept, and shaking off traditional development practices for more efficient ones.

It doesn't take much to blow up a development window so given all the missteps along the way I'm surprised we're even seeing the game.

@lostn: Simultaneous projects because they have to pay the bills and they have pretty long development cycles anyway, loss of the original director because he was assigned to the Kingdom Hearts sequel, lack of a solid concept because of the volatile state of the staff and more focus on other projects, platform change because of time and a growing vision, engine change because of platform change, and re-evaluating the game's concept because as it developed they decided to remove it from the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythos.

@lostn: Are you seriously comparing the develpment of an HD rpg (with voice acting in multiple languages, light and physics effects, fully rendered 3D enviroments and so on) with that of 8-bit and 16-bit rpgs? Besides the issues the game faced outside of development you can't expect it to take the same time to make as final fantasy 2, that's just unrealistic.

@cheto88: I've seen HD games being made in 2 years, so yes.

It's actually a very fair comparison. Games now are a lot more complex and harder to make, but development teams are now measured in hundreds of staff as opposed to a few dozen. A lot more man hours are put into a game per year than back in the 8 bit days, so year for year, it is very much a valid comparison. If they took the 30 people working on FF2 and had them make FF13 with the same graphics and scope, then maybe it would have taken 50 years to make. But that's now how they do things these days.

@lostn: Fair point, though I still feel making an HD game in 2 years is the exception rather than the norm. COD, for example, can do it because they have multiple studios working on those games and nothing else, whereas companies like square enix have several projects they work on simulaneously. Maybe FF15 could've been made in 2 years, but without a whole lot of resources and manpower that I think SE doesn't have (at least not for a single game) it's impossible. And the game did have a troubled development history, so there's that too.

@Daelusca: I didn't say that, learn to read. 10 years is too long even by today standards, but can you seriously expect the development of an HD game to take the same amount of time as an 8-bit or a 16-bit game? If you do then you have no idea how game development works.

@oddsnake: people was making big noise about the battle system. They seem to have changed it a little due to feedback. Personally I love both styles so this news is only benefiting gamers as more styles have been added. Good chance of Replayability.
