Spy Hunter flick targets July '07

The Rock says script is done, shooting begins this year; Universal aiming for July 2007 release. Haven't we heard something similar before?

Will moviegoers finally hear "the Peter Gunn Theme" in a local Cineplex? According to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, they will by next summer.

The arcade classic Spy Hunter, which used the aforementioned tune to lure gamers into its tale of espionage and fast-driving cars, has long been in talks to get the big-screen treatment. In 2003, Universal Pictures bought the rights to make a film based on the game from Midway Games.

Can you smell what the Rock is driving?
Can you smell what the Rock is driving?

Little was heard about the film for months, until action director John Woo was tied to the film and scheduled for a 2005 release. Reports of Woo fleeing the project like a flock of doves (he has since been reattached) and 2005's passing without a single oil slick or smokescreen hitting theaters left many thinking the project was dead.

New (and likely more reliable) information on the movie has surfaced courtesy of Johnson, who has been pegged as the film's leading man since day one. Johnson, fresh off of starring in the big screen adaptation of Doom and lending his voice, likeness, and knowledge in hand-to-hand combat to Midway's upcoming Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run game, revealed new Spy Hunter details to Yahoo! Games.

The former wrestling star has said that Stuart Beattie's (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Collateral) script is complete, shooting begins later this year, and the film has been pegged for a July 2007 release.

"Spy Hunter will have great action. Some of the set pieces that were written are absolutely mind-blowing," said Johnson. Apparently, Universal has high hopes to turn Spy Hunter into a long-running franchise. However, The Rock believes that kind of success can't just rely on the brand.

"A lot of times the successful video game doesn't always equate to a successful movie," he said. "It all comes down to the writing..."

Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run will be released on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox this September. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Silent Hill was a fairly good game-to-movie transition, despite the dodgy ending, as was FFVII: Advent Children. This could turn out ok but the developers need to have an influence on the movie, as Hideo Kojima will with the announced Metal Gear Solid movie.

The Rock was good in The Scorpion King. And when he was in the movie Doom, I began to lose interest in The Rocks movie career, or the lack thereof. This movie is going to flop so bad.

Yawn.... The Rock? Cmon this must be an ultra-low budget film or else good ole' Rocky is getting typecast for all videogame-movies. What's next? Metal Gear Solid with the Rock?

Doom sucked, but the rock is a decent actor. He has a new movie coming out where he plays a football coach for a juvinile detention center or something. It looks like his best acting.

Sweet, another Rock film coming our way. I think the Rock is a decent actor. He's only been at the acting gig for a few years and you know he's busting his hump to become better at acting. If you disagree with this and want to challenge this opinion, "Just Bring It!"

This'll probably be a piece of crap. I mean, how many good movies are EVER based on video games? It's not that video games don't feature compelling storylines and plots that would translate well to the big screen...it's just that more often than not, the games Hollywood chooses to adapt for the big screen are incredibly ill-suited to make the transition to movie form. They're either terrible action movies or shlocky horror flicks. Even when great games are chosen for adaptation, they often still don't translate well (Resident Evil). The fact that the "star" of this movie is a professional wrestler should tell you all you need to know. According to The Rock, "Spy Hunter will have great action. Some of the set pieces that were written are absolutely mind-blowing." In other words, lots of crap blows up real good. Whoopee. Also, shouldn't the movie be titled "Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run: The Official Movie of the Game"? Seems like you can't release a big-time movie tie-in nowadays without that idiotic subtitle.

I dont care who is in it. John Woo sucks. He gets praise for his action sequences when they are cheesy! Look at Face/Off and Mission Impossible II. Too many friggin sparks and crappy everything. I hate him as a director lol

probally the film will be good i mean halo is going to theatres next year as planned and has peter jackson helmed as executive producer on the flick and is being written by the writer of 28 days later. Also it supposedly to have guilermo del toro director of hell boy working on the movie but has dropped out since he wants to do hell boy 2 by middle or end of next year. The point of me saying that is probally spy hunter will be good and concidering the screen writer of pirates of the caribbean and collateral is attached then it might as well be good. I did like doom to a certain extent since I am a fan of the game series also a sequel was announced to doom right after the first came to theatres so theres more game to film adaptations to come like half life and F.E.A.R to name a few

My guesstimate on the movie will be this: 3300 starting screens $9.2 million release week. $7 million following. Total gross $36 million after 8 weeks. After marketing costs and production costs, they lose $8 million on the whole deal. I doubt this movie will cost a lot to make and most of the money will have gone into marketing.

Nice but the Rock needs to learn how to be an Actor. He was real bad in the movie Doom. THe game looks weak. I also wonder why it would be on the Xbox not the 360. By that time the Xbox will have died.
