Split Fiction Is Getting A Movie Adaptation, Just Like It Takes Two

Hollywood studios are expected to begin bidding for the chance to adapt Split Fiction for the big screen.

The launch of Split Fiction couldn't have gone any better for Hazelight Studios and EA. In just two weeks, Split Fiction has become EA's No. 2 all-time game on Steam. Now, a Split Fiction movie is reportedly in development, and the project is expected to attract a bidding war from Hollywood Studios.

According to Variety, Hazelight is reuniting with Story Kitchen, the media company that helped sell the movie rights for the studio's previous game, It Takes Two, which landed at Amazon MGM Studios. The report indicates that Hazelight and Story Kitchen are already assembling cast members, writers, and a director for the pitch before Split Fiction goes out to potential buyers.

The game follows two young women, Zoe and Mio, who are strangers to each other before they find themselves trapped together in mishmash of the sci-fi and fantasy stories they've written. In order to escape from the virtual world and return to reality, the two women have to figure out how to work together and use their skills to survive the experience.

Split Fiction has the distinction of being EA's first game to reach 90 or above on Metacritic since 2012's Mass Effect 2. It also received a 10/10 score in GameSpot's review. Hazelight announced earlier this month that Split Fiction has already sold two million copies, and it seems likely to be one of the top-selling games for March.

Hazelight Studios continues to prove itself as a powerhouse in narrative-driven co-op games. Split Fiction’s rapid success on Steam and critical acclaim (90+ on Metacritic and a perfect GameSpot review) solidify it as one of EA’s most celebrated titles in years.

The announcement of a Split Fiction movie isn't surprising, given the industry's growing trend of adapting video games into films. With Hazelight partnering again with Story Kitchen (which helped with It Takes Two's adaptation), there's a strong chance this project will attract big names in Hollywood. The blend of sci-fi and fantasy storytelling in Split Fiction makes it a compelling choice for a cinematic experience.

Given the game’s sales momentum—already at two million copies sold—it seems likely to be one of the top-selling games of March. EA hasn’t had a first-party hit like this in over a decade, making Split Fiction a major win for both the publisher and Hazelight. It'll be interesting to see how the film adaptation unfolds and whether it can capture the charm and uniqueness of the game.

I watched people playing and it looks terrible I just think people are desperate for coop games. I played their other game in the prison years ago, it's really shoddy.... But any game is fun when you're playing coop.

@Slannmage: I played Redfall and Anthem when they first came out; not every game is fun in co-op.

@Slannmage: I beat Split Fiction with my best friend within its first week of launch. Not only do I believe it is a 10/10 game, I think it might be the very best co-op game ever created.

Is it, though? We're still waiting for the It Takes Two movie.
