Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank Dev Insomniac Games Reveals New Logo

Insomniac Games has a new logo.

Insomniac Games, the studio behind games like Spyro, Resistance, Ratchet & Clank, Sunset Overdrive, and the upcoming Spider-Man game for PlayStation 4, has revealed a new company logo. In a blog post, the studio said it challenged itself to "think beyond the moon" for its logo. And this led to some big changes.

"We wanted a redesign that reflected our evolution as a studio and as people while retaining some familiarity to our past logo treatments," it said. "We're very proud, excited, and yes, a little nervous to reveal our new Insomniac Games logo."

The studio came up with this design "very early" in the process of coming up with a new one. Insomniac stuck with it because it ticked the right boxes.

"It's got a lunar theme, with what appear to be two crescent moons facing each other as the 'O'--reminiscent of our past and future. Many folks here also see a portal or lens for the 'O,' which we like because it symbolizes exploration as well as how many of our fans see us differently," Insomniac explained.

"Observant fans will see the subtle callbacks to our previous Insomniac Games logo, including the oversized 'O,' serif lettering on the 'N' and the positioning of 'Games' as a core part of our identity."

Insomniac went on to say that its new logo "may be jarring to some people." While the studio is mindful of its journey, it's also intent on evolving--and a new logo is part of that. You can see Insomniac's logos from throughout the years below, including when it was known as Xtreme Software.

Finally, Insomniac updated fans on some key numbers from throughout its history. The studio has released 25 games since its founding in 1994, growing in that time from 50 employees to more than 275 across its Burbank, California and Raleigh, North Carolina offices. Insomniac employees have collectively given birth to more than 200 babies since its founding.

I'm a fan of the minimalist style, but why would they change it?

This minimalistic trend needs to stop. What's the point of a logo if you're just gonna make it look like a regular font? They're one letter away from their logo just being the word "insomniac" in capital letters.

No creativity, no originality. I wonder if this is a subtle way of telling us that, because Sunset Overdrive tanked, they're done being creative and they plan on working exclusively on existing franchises and licensed movie games from now on. That would be a shame.

At least it's not quite as minimalistic as the new Rare logo. Now that one was stripped of any trace of life.

I am still pissed off with insomniac games, they are a sellout and betrayed ps4 by make that sunset overdrive game for xbox, I am happy that the game was a flop that is happens when you bite the hands that feed you, but I believe in second chances so I am willing to overlook it, but if they do it again then I am done with them.

@yukushi: Are you mad you didn't get to play it because you're a fanboy? Or are you mad because they made a Xbox game and you're a fanboy?

Personally not a fan of the minimalist style that seems to be popping up lately. I think there previous logo looked far better.

Hey, what do you know. They went with the less aesthetic. I guess this is a thing now. Ubisoft did that too.

It just screams "we care less about fun and more about saving money every step of the way".

That's just how I interpret this "less" aesthetic with what seems to be every developer changing their logo these days. This doesn't mean that's how they feel internally about video games (although, I'm pretty sure that's how EA feels).

@cornbredx: I just think it's cleaner and more business serious. The old ones look like something a 1 person startup might draw in their garages and think "this is the best logo ever"

But yea clean is a boring thing. But people also prefer a black suit and Mercedes and Volvo.

@cornbredx: If they were worried about saving money they wouldn't redesign the logo at all. It costs money to redesign the logo, it costs nothing to leave it the same.

Is it just me (-It's just you, Ninja.-) or has Insomniac not been churning out as many games as they did last gen? Other than Sunset overdrive and perhaps one or 2 Ratchet & Clank games I haven't heard much from them. I'm not sure if it is in fact true or not but last gen it felt like they were pumping out games at a much higher rate. Weren't there like 3 resistance games as well as a whole slew of Ratchet & Clank titles? Now I would rather have a company that takes 10 years to produce an amazingly well put together game any day over one that churns them out on a monthly basis with no thought or care but still I don't get the impression that there has been a substantial dip in care compared to their older titles.

Regardless, I'm actually looking forward to their next foray into the world of everybody's favorite wall-crawler. I have a feeling they are putting a lot more pressure on themselves to deliver on this outing than perhaps any other title they have released in the last decade.

@chiefwiggum16: THIS. The only flaw with that game was they simply did not promote it enough. I would love to see a second one but with base building a true coop campaign.

Uh...huh.

200 kids between them in 25 years, but only 25 games? Maybe they're having too much time off... =P
