Sorcery Impressions

Sony describes Sorcery as a "next generation" motion controller experience, and we got to see it at E3 2010.

The PlayStation Move is set to be one of the big stories of this year's E3, so it was no surprise to see the new controller as the focus of Sony's press conference. One of the first games demoed on stage was Sorcery, where you'll play as a young wizard who must stop a great evil, using the Move controller as your wand.

As the sorcerer's apprentice, you can call up a wheel to select spells and then wave the wand to cast them. You can control the power and direction of the spell by the way you move your arm, doing different things depending on how you shake the Move controller. You can flick it to fire at enemies or move it across your body to draw a wall of fire, for example. We saw a selection of spells, such as fire, ice, and whirlwind. You can even mix spells to create a whirlwind of fire, which you can then steer using the remote.

You can also drink potions to turn yourself into other creatures, such as a rat. We watched as the Sony demonstrator shook the remote to mix the potion and then made a drinking motion to drink it down. As a rat, you can then get into smaller areas, and there will be other forms you can take in the finished game to reach other places. There are also more utilitarian spells, such as the mending spell that will help you fix broken bridges.

Sorcery looks like it takes place in a Fable-esque world, as the demo ended as a huge ogre stormed through a corridor, knocking down pillars as it charged toward you. The demo ended before we got to see an epic fight, but it was still a tantalizing glimpse at one of the games Sony is clearly hoping will sell Move to family gamers. We'll bring you more information on the game when we have it, and you can catch it in stores in the second quarter of 2011.

looks pretty good, ill porbably buy. move is starting to look better than kinect, which seems to me like eyetoy 2.0... looking at the demo for the kinect star wars game, alot of it seemed to be just waving his hand to deflect bullets. Maybe im just imagining it, but it'll sure be interesting to see what comes out on top when theyre both released

I don't know why this game looks so fun! At the start of the Sony conference I was like 'meh' to the Move, but at the end I was like 'YEH!'

Meh...the core casting doesn't sound too unique thus far. The storyline so far seems pretty typical. Games like Eternal Darkness which really challenge the player to think of interesting limitations and challenges DURING combat should be the priority of Sorcery before getting too excited about being able to wave a wand around. Obviously these observations are based off of little to no information, but I just hope we don't have to go through another thousand titles of "OMG MOTION CONTROLS, I CAN WAVE THIS THING AND STUFF HAPPENS."

This might be what will make me buy Move. I got bored of motion controls with the Wii, but this game looks amazing! If they keep making games like this for Move, I'll definitely get some of these controllers.

@HollowNinja, it's impossible to assign a score from a brief 3 min video. But even so, this clip showed at least a solid AA title, easily. And it definitely was not the only game worth owning Move for... Socom 4 will be the first title worth owning it for imo. But Resi5 Gold, Killzone 3, & SportsChampions will all be worth owning Move.

I was pleasantly surprised by this demo!!! Not only was it a great demonstration of Move implementation... it was a genuinely fun looking game! It reminded me of the core experiences that made the PS2 so great!

@HollowNinja True from what we saw it's at about a 7. But it's not being released this year so they have plenty of time to implement a lot more interesting things. Also i posted a thread on the forums with more info on the game (i got bored). The final game should feature: more spells, progress from apprentice to master wizard and of cause some "stop bad guy/gal"-storeline. Hope they make some interesting puzzles and it might be enough to warrant a PS Move buy. Time will tell :)

@Morf_uni Well, yes, that part was quite interesting, I'll admit that. The idea of mixing spells as potential. But that in itself can't carry the entire individuality factor of the entire game. I'll admit that that's a new idea, but it doesn't separate the game from the pack. Out of all the Move games, this is the one that came closest to capturing my interest. But at best, this seems like a 7/10 game: Just average (kind of leaning down to a 6 even). Granted, I haven't played it. I don't know everything about the game. But from what I've seen, there isn't much new to be seen, other that the motion control gimmick (which was at least implemented well).

@HollowNinja i must disagree, the ability to mix the spells (whirlwind+fire = firestorm), makes the game different from what else i've seen out there. Also it did seem it was very well integrated with the Move controller. Personally this is about the only move controller based game that have ignited my interest. My 2 cents.

You know, if this made no use of motion control whatsoever, it would just be another cookie-cutter fantasy game, no, THE cookie-cutter fantasy game. The only selling point to Sorcery is the use of the Move. That's not a good thing.

Move seems great for targeting hardcore and casual gamers. Where as kinect seems to work well with the xbox media interface, but for good games......you really need buttons.

not sure a bout move, kinect just seems like a much bolder and promising move. Id rather buy 3-4 games frankly than another controller

Yeah this looked really decent, nice to see that Sony is taking a more hardcore approach to introducing its motion sensing gaming.
