Sony's Big New PS5 And PC Game Concord Got Off To A Slow Start

"I really hope people give it a shot," developer says about Sony's big new PS5 and PC game.

Sony's latest big PlayStation 5 and PC game, Concord, launched on August 23 after an estimated eight years of development. The game did not, however, appear to put up big numbers at release, despite being generally well-received by fans and critics. [Update: Less than two weeks after launch, Sony has announced that Concord will go offline.]

On Steam, Concord peaked at 697 concurrent users on launch day, August 23, and has fallen off since. PlayStation 5 player numbers are not publicly available, but Tweaktown discovered that Concord ranks at No. 50 right now on the PS5 best-seller charts on the PlayStation Store.

Now Playing: Concord Everything To Know

Concord's special-edition DualSense 5 controller remains available for purchase, whereas some of Sony's previous controller releases themed around new games sold out quickly. There could be any number of reasons why one controller sold out and another didn't, however, and the fact that Concord's controller didn't sell out doesn't necessarily speak to the popularity of the game.

On launch day, a number of Sony's other internal PlayStation studios rallied around Concord and released statements praising the game and creating custom art for Concord. Sony's Insomniac (Spider-Man) and Bend (Days Gone) studios played the game live on Twitch to help drum up excitement for it.

Some expected Concord to be a free-to-play title, but it had a premium release, priced at $40. It is a live-service title, with multiple upcoming seasons planned, but--in an unusual move for 2024--does not offer a battle pass or microtransactions at launch

The hero shooter didn't have a long announcement-to-release period, as Concord was announced at the end of May and launched about three months later.

Concord was developed by Firewalk Studios, which is owned by Sony, and it's the developer's first game. It was in development for 8+ years, according to lead designer Joe Weisnewski. "Concord has so much humanity and depth to it. I really hope people give it a shot. Insanely proud of the game and we’re strapped in and ready to push it for years to come," the developer said.

Sony was at one point planning to release 10 live-service games by 2026 but later cut the figure in half as the company outlined a plan to focus on quality over quantity. Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Online, once described as the developer's most ambitious game ever, was canceled

According to a report, one of the last major decisions that former PlayStation boss Jim Ryan made was a mandate for PlayStation's teams to make more games-as-a-service titles. A number of PlayStation developers were said to be upset by this, and the blame apparently fell on industry veteran Connie Booth. A 30-year veteran, Booth left PlayStation in October 2023, and no reason for her departure was ever provided. Some believe she was fired. Booth is now an executive at Electronic Arts.

Looking ahead, Concord Season 1: The Tempest, launches in October--it adds a new character, new map, new variants, and additional cosmetics and rewards. It also introduces a new season of weekly cinematic vignettes that will further flesh out the narrative. Season 2 is scheduled for January, with Season 3 expected in April.

At least 75% in the comment section writes immature "after-wise" comments about how bad the game is or looked, how they should have cancelled it, how they would have cancelled the game years ago if they were running Sony Computer Entertainment.

Why not go ahead and try to be CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, folks? You seem to know exactly how to run things.

A word of warning though..it is probably not as easy as you think when you have to make decisions ahead of a game release and not after a game flops, and also have to think about stupid corporate greed concepts like "revenue" or "profitability".

As for the game itself.. some gamers are a bit picky sometimes, and likes to complain a lot. And it shows sometimes. They seem to either love or hate some games. No balanced and sober reaction sometimes.

Maybe the game would have been more successful with a better marketing campaing and another release date. It just happened to get a release almost at the same time as the sleeper hit of the year, Wukong.

Or maybe releasing it at the price 40 bucks was a mistake instead of trying to release it for free (maybe a 40 bucks physical collectors edition). Many other gaems like apex Legends for example are free. So selling something for 40 bucks when there are similar fps multiplayer games out there for free is sometimes tough. Maybe the developers behind Arc Raiders rethinks their new 40 bucks price now.. But Arc Raiders might be more original and worth 40 bucks perhaps.

@simonthekid7: You work at Sony?

Only reason I can think of to defend this soulless dumpster fire.

@skippert OK, I have to make a small statement. This isn't anything to do with actual diversity. No doubt, the developers slinging crap at gamers are white people, who then turn around and brag about how tolerant and accepting of other people they are... Into an echo chamber chiefly full of white people. Games like Overwatch, Valorant, Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, et al prove that a diverse cast can work... Provided the characters are interesting.

Using right-wing talking points like "DEI" and "woke" only serve to provide these Silicon Valley trust fund babies excuse to dismiss the legitimate desire for good games with interesting characters while driving away minority and gay players who, let's be honest, want the same thing that we do - great games. No one wants this patronizing Rooney Rule nonsense, everyone wants meaningful inclusion. Remember, gamers are gamers, regardless of their race, color or creed.

@simonthekid7: First you blame gamers for not understanding how game development and marketing works. Then you say it's because it's not a free-to-play model and the lack of marketing campaign that caused this failure. How about proposing that developers just make a good game? How about the fact that people are not waiting for this type of game? How about people are not waiting for DEI in games? The servers of this game are going down the drain. It wont exist in a year from now. Nobody asked for it, and nobody is playing it. Stop defending garbage.

@simonthekid7: Except it's not afterward. The signals were there for a long time. But they are pushing for a non-existent modern audience in a genre that nobody is asking for - a genre that started dying 5 years ago BTW.

I hope Sony takes this knock on the chin as a lesson to stick to what they know, which is amazing single player experiences. That being said, I do think it was a huge mistake to charge any money for Concord. That took it from little chance, to no chance.

Hero shooters or team based shooters are just not for me.

The one thing going for it is getting rid of F2P monetization.

If it had a campaign and solo multiplayer then I would be more interested but it is team multiplayer only.

Give me a Baldurs Gate 3, a couch co-op like Mario Wonder, etc..

I’m sure some of the “live service games” are great— I’ve enjoyed Hell Divers, for instance. But as a general business strategy, I’m thinking people are tired of games you pay for and then have to keep paying for with micro transactions. Plus, consumers are tightening up their spending in general right now.

@bomarmonk: I imagine Sony's going to be looking heavily at their Live Service plans now. There's just not enough room in the live service space, especially not for a pay-to-play game.

Sony's best when making solo experiences. They need to stick to what they're good at, at what people want from them.

@Lunatic420s: Apparently Bungie did an audit of Sony's live-service games when they were bought by the company. I suspect some chicanery, given how Destiny 2 has been mismanaged.

When are these publishers going to learn that there is only so much room for these live service games?! Fortnite, CoD, Rainbow 6, Sea of Thieves, Apex Legends, Overwatch, WoW, FFXIV Online, Destiny....

There IS simply NO ROOM for new, generic versions of essentially the same games that already exist! Concord is DOA already, and after nearly 8 YEARS in development, that studio will probably suffer massive layoffs very soon, if not close as a result.

The industry doesn't need MORE games, it needs BETTER games. And while true that virtually anything these days is derivative of something else, good content still needs something unique in order to stand out. More single-player games in franchises that people love and have legions of fans (like Crash and Spyro) should be a no-brainer, but because they can't monetize it, nickel & diming the customer to death for the foreseeable future, sadly it's now low priority for most publishers.

@Furwings: I would argue the industry needs to step away a bit from the super giant budgets that have made game development completely unsustainable of late. Honestly, I'm not sure leaning into franchises is the answer, but games that are single-player with less of an obscene budget and an emphasis on a distinct style over generic photorealism will do wonders. Not every game needs to cost $300+ million to make in order to exist.

I'll write the same of what I said to someone: for this game clearly developed for little kids even little kids wouldn't play it for how childish it's. it's more attractive to little girls, not for boys at all. on top of it a game for kids not F2P so how little kids can play it? do they expect adults who earn their own money come from 9-5 job and with 2 hours of free time they have for themselves they play this game? if I had a kid who wanna play this I wouldn't give even $1 for this trash, I wouldn't want my kid to waste time on this trash even if it was F2P. it's waste of bill and unnecessary risk for the computer to stop working. another business fail from sony. move along :DDD

They could've released a new Dead or Alive or Senran Kagura instead of whatever this is and made a lot of money. Say what you want about those series and how "controversial" they would be for "modern audiences", at least they have a real target demographic. Concord was a vanity project made by arrogant developers who thought that the average gamer was a progressive overweight with a gender-studies degree. When you appeal to such a small demographic you can expect to lose money.

@plurmp: Sony does not release Dead or Alive games. Tecmo Koei does. For both playstation and Xbox.

But Sony could do their own beat them up, but the market is probably a bit crowded with all the established big names in beat them ups.

@plurmp: what the **** does being overweight have to do with your point? What an asshole. It was clearly designed to appeal to the most people possible? I don’t even know enough about the game to hate it like you do but clearly you’ve spent time gate watching content to rile yourself up. Pretty cool guy.

@jsatch87: Struck a nerve? Bro, I'm obese in real life, but that doesn't mean I want to play as a fat character. Being overweight is extremely unhealthy and should not be normalized or celebrated. Video games for most gamers are supposed to be an escapist power fantasy where you get to be something you're not in real life. Your idea of "appealing to most people possible" is exactly why this game flopped so hard. When you pander to narcissists who want to see their boring and ugly real life selves in a video game, you lose the majority of gamers who just want to play as cool and visually appealing characters.

@plurmp: I still don’t understand what you’re talking about. I just looked at the list of characters and maybe one of them looks fat? You’re complaining about them making characters pandering to a certain demographic but you have no evidence for that and are clearly just…..mad? One of them is a robot, one of them is a frog lizard person. Just don’t play the game. Stop trying to make everything about your agenda.

@jsatch87: I seem mad? Sure buddy. I'm very mad that this terrible video game flopped totally. Are you one of the devs who worked on this disaster? That's the only explanation I can think of to take my comment so personally. Just look at the official trailer for Concord. It has a 90% dislike ratio and most of the comments are negative. If you think the character designs are acceptable, you're in the minority.

@jsatch87: It's because there are multiple overweight characters in the game and they don't have a cool or likeable design/personality like the Heavy or Roadhog. No one wants to be a lame character in a video game. No one wants to be forced to look at lame characters either.

I'm not sure how you can arrive at the conclusion that this game was designed to appeal to the most people possible, when it clearly appeals to no one.

@Sushiglutton: I think Concord is failing mostly because it's too late to capitalize on the Hero Shooter craze, Overwatch (which is also "woke") is free, and because it got very little marketing. The only reason I even heard about Concord was because I saw some of the usual, "Everything is woke!" crowd mocking it. It seems like Sony sent this game out to die.
