Sony six-month losses nearly $700 million, PS3 sales up

Better-than-expected July-Sept. quarter sees current-gen console sales jump to 3.2 million, but PSP sales fall to 3 million and PS2 sales drop to 1.9 million; annual loss estimate lowered.

Yesterday, Nintendo reported a ¥69.5 billion ($766 million) net profit for the six months ended September 30, far below analysts' estimates. Today, rival Sony announced it took a ¥63.2 billion ($696 million) net shortfall during the same period, following the $1.03 billion annual loss it reported in May--its first since 1995. Revenue for the April-September period was ¥3.261 trillion ($35.85 billion), down from ¥4.051 trillion ($44.54 billion) during the same period in 2008.

While dire, Sony's losses were less than expected.
While dire, Sony's losses were less than expected.

While substantial, Sony's red ink was less than that predicted by a Thomson Reuters new service survey of analysts, thanks to a better-than-expected ¥26.3 billion ($289 million) net loss on during July-September quarter. During that time, the company took in ¥1.66 trillion ($18.26 billion) in revenue, down from ¥2.07 trillion ($22.77 billion) during the same period the year prior.

The three-month period saw Sony's Networked Product and Services Division, which includes Sony Computer Entertainment, generate ¥352.6 billion ($3.88 billion) in operating revenue for an operating loss of ¥ 58.8 billion ($646 million). Though it did not break out SCE's earnings, Sony did say that "sales in the game business decreased year on year primarily as a result of the appreciation of the yen, as well as a decrease in unit sales of PlayStation 2 hardware and software." The company's admission comes just two days after it used the platform's ninth birthday to declare the PS2 was "showing no signs of slowing down."

Indeed, quarterly PS2 sales dropped from 2.5 million units in July-September 2008 to 1.9 million units during the same time frame in 2009. Quarterly PSP sales were also down, falling from 3.2 million units to 3.0 million units. But thanks to the introduction of the $300 slimline model in late August, PS3 unit sales rose from 2.4 million units to 3.2 million units.

Sony also cited lower movie revenue and declining sales of its VAIO laptops, Bravia HDTVs, and Sony Ericsson mobile phones as other reasons for its losses. However, a doubling in finance-sector revenue, an increase in music revenue boosted by sales of the late Michael Jackson's albums, and eventual savings from a massive companywide restructuring, which saw 16,000 jobs eliminated, caused the company to raise its full-year earnings projections. The company now expects to lose ¥95 billion ($1.04 billion), down from ¥120 billion ($1.32 billion).

Seems like Sony is only facing losses because it is driving its quarters all over the place while one of its major revenue comes from games. But hey, business is business, most businesses would spread out it's company so to not face major losses when a sector is doing less than perfect. One day, that Sony Vaio may actually play a role in the company.

This is bad ... I hope to see a brighter future because I don't want to have bought a 400$ consol that will be abandonned. But ... sony always do something like that ... the PS1 was very desapointing until 2 or 3 years after hitting store shelves. Same story with the PS2. They may have a the same idea with the PS3. While writting this, when the PS1 came out, they put CD technology in it, it was really new at the time. Same thing with the PS2 with DVD technology and now with Blue-Ray. They have a plan.

For the people asking who buyes ps2 in this times, well is a simple question you live in the USA your economy is much better that the other countries and you have much more prices than other places. In my country i know people that still play ps1 because they cannot afford a ps2. So there is your answer. There is people that instead of a ps3 or a 360 they buy a ps2.

As well as it should . It annoys me that they are still trying to repackage old systems in different styles and sell them. Why the hell am I going to go buy a PS2? I bought one 6 years ago and if I wanted to play it I would. Why would I buy another PS3 just b/c its slim? Another PSP because its slim? Whatever. I'm not a hater of any system. I am a game player and I and a fan of any game that is good. I am sorry that all those people lost their jobs though, which is the saddest part.

The HDTV thing is kind of funny. Samsung makes a better TV. Sony makes a lot of stuff, it's not just the gaming or TV part of the biz. It's everything Sony makes that has put them to the place they are in now. Fom TV's DVD/Blu-Ray players, computers, MP3 players and so on. If i was sony, I would stop making digital SLR's. They suck and don't sell. I would also stop making all kinds of video cams. They are not Canon and only 2 video cams they make are good. 1 video cam is in the 1000's. and the other is $1200 but that video cam is not even as good as the JVC HD cam. Sony needs to slow down and cut a lot of hardware off until they can get going once more. Just cut the crap and stick with a small hardware biz for now. Hell maybe if they ask Obama for some cash they might get it. J/k. Obama sucks.

@ Inconnux but face it, ps3 has the best exclusives when sony is in losses. imagine how many first party titles they would invest in when their out of the recession. as long as sony are making losses it will continue to prove which hardware is valued the most........the ps3. if wii and xbox are making profits it tells me one thing........the hardware is cheap which is why their making money on it when its priced lower then the ps3. common sense tbh.

Wow, I can't believe it, I'm actually getting bored of reading idiotic fanboy posts. I think fanboys enjoy arguing about games more than playing them. Well, I'm off to do other stuff, like play games, instead of just arguing about "My dad will beat up YOUR dad."

@hman1111 YOU ARE A FANBOY! Your rating of games says it all. Get over it. You, Vasot and salarianchemist are the biggest and most annoying xbox fanboys on this website. You guys always have to add some sort of fanboyism comments and start a fanboy-war. Stick to the topic or go to the system wars forum...enough is enough.

Sure, keep on minusing this and responding to this, I'm not going to bother responding now, got something else to do.

@alixkid Sure depends on how you look at it. Would you say the Wii won? The same Wii that looks like it won't make it through 2010 without being replaced with another Nintendo console?

That being said, I'm not going to say the 360 hasn't ever had bad news, it's just that the PS3 has had a LOT more bad news (feel free to look it up).

not surprising the key thing is the loss wasn't as bad, this is a global issue. and a strong yen does hurt them.

@ Mr_Tweedy: So you're assuming that a decrease in losses means that Sony is on the rise? Tell that to all the people who lost their jobs, the gaming division which has yet to see a profit. You can consider it a rise after they've come out of the red. And while you're doing armchair analysis, don't forget about market saturation. Nintendo wasn't going to sell 300,000+ Wiis a month until the end of time.

@hman1111 Don't claim that Xbox 360 hasn't had bad news, "Mr. I underrate opposite console's games low, because I don't have the system." That's what extreme fanboyism is.

@Inconnux Playstation 3 Slim is cheaper to manufacture than the older phatty models of Ps3, as for example the touch buttons got removed. Manufacturing costs being down to 70% is one of the reasons why it's possible having the system in the pricetag it's currently in. Sure, they still lose money every system sold, but they do get money from Bundles and all that for example. Playstation 3, however isn't the only way Sony is getting money, so basically you can't all say this is PS3's fault. It's recession's fault and it's not only Sony who is suffering, but they're the ones suffering the most with videogameconsoles, as their system was priced the highest, due to the manufacturing costs and third party developers not knowing how to properly advantage the CBE, ending up having nearly identical multiplatform games. I don't get why all the Xbox 360 -fanboys are being so happy about this, if there were no Sony, there would be no Xbox 360 price drops and all that other stuff they use for competiting with each others. If Sony lost, then MS fanboys would in a WAY lose too. However, I know for sure, that if Sony did lose, which I doubt will happen.. I still wouldn't buy any Microsoft consoles, after what my cousin has been throught. Xbox 360 owners.. ..if you don't have respect for Sony, because of PS3, at least care for them for the PS2. I'm sure a lot of us own at least one Sony product. I'm a Playstation fanboy myself which I've been ever since the first Playstation came out, I had respect in Sony then, like I still do.

Sony has been taking losses all year in pretty much every division. It'll be a while before they recoup the costs of the PS3, and even their TV division has gone under. Sony may arguably have some of the best HDTVs on the high end, but in the sub $2,000 market they're destroyed by Samsung (#1) and LG (#2). Even Panasonic is currently doing better. I doubt Sony would ever fold, but I do wonder if it will cause them to be less aggressive going forward.

What all this means is that Sony is still bleeding cash for each PS3 made and the price drop has made this worse. Sure they have increased sales, but more units sold == more losses. On the other hand the bad news for Microsoft and Nintendo... Microsoft is finally seeing a decent profit, even with the hardware issues, and Nintendo 'only' made over 2 billion instead of 3.3 that they were expecting. One has to wonder how long Sony stock shareholders will continue to accept the 'company line' and demand action. I know I am happy that I don't own Sony stock.

They had to release the PS3 when they did at as big of a loss as they did in order to win the Blu-ray war. It cost them lots and lots of money but it worked. Had there not been an HD-DVD format who knows when the PS3 would have been released. I guess time will tell if the royalties are worth the billions they have lost.

Sony has done an outstanding job at turning the PS3 around. Of course, I never thought it was bad in the first place, but now, anyone who says PS3 has no games is ignorant and stupid. These losses were probably more attributed to the other products and services in this division that was marked as losing money, not Sony Computer Entertainment specifically.

The last thing I want is for any gaming company to be losing money which may result in people losing jobs. I want every console to do well, so in case I decide to get another console, I will at least know it's a great console. I only have an Xbox 360 but if I want a console in the future, I'd WANT to make sure the PS3 or Wii or say PSP or DS is selling well.

The 360's profits haven't been through the roof. They've made a lot of off software, but all those RRODs add up. Not only that but the first Xbox NEVER made profit; it could have, but Microsoft pretty much cut all production for the first console after the 360 came out. I think with all the PS2s Sony sold over the decade, they can afford a hardware loss on PS3's, especially if the software picks up like it should over the next year.

I'm sorry I don't own any console except PSP but Sony fanboys have been saying this for past 2 years. Always great games coming out not this year but next year right? 2 years ago you guys said it will take a year for PS3 to get in shape, now you are telling me it takes 3 years to get in shape? Anyone who is a rational consumer would conclude that Xbox360 is the console of this generation right now after following all the news.

Did you miss this line in my comments? "Movie sales, Electronics sales and PS2/PSP sales are all down. " They had losses all around, not just in the gaming division. Read the article again. ******************************************************************* xophaser Sony's Bravia are over priced, was going to get one, but Samsung had a better deal at the time. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I hear ya. I own 2 Sony T.V.s (1 - 50" HDTV LCD and a 27" Trinitron), but my next HDTV 1080p will probably be a Samsung as there T.V.'s are pretty awesome and definitely cheaper then Sony's overpriced Bravia's.

Sony should stop making psp bundles because it makes the price of the psp look kind of high and lower the psp 3000 core to just $150 and the psp go to $200. i think that should increase the sales a little.
