Sony Shutting Down Its Rewards Program, Here Are The Deadlines For Submitting Claims

Sony is no longer accepting applicants.

Sony has revealed that it will be ending the Sony Rewards program offered through its Sony- and PlayStation-branded credit cards at the end of 2024.

In an updated FAQ page, the Sony Rewards website and mobile application will shut down on December 31, 2024. Users have until then to redeem any points and access their account, as well as submit any bonus points and purchase credit request forms through the app. However, after July 21, users will no longer be able to mail in physical bonus points or purchase credit request forms.

The rewards program isn't to be confused with the PlayStation Stars program, which is PlayStation's loyalty and digital collectibles program.

The Sony Rewards program involves using the Sony and PlayStation Visa credit cards to accrue points in order to redeem items such as electronics, gift cards, and PSN Store codes.

The PlayStation credit card was first introduced in 2017. Microsoft recently introduced the Xbox credit card last year with Mastercard, which recently became available to everyone outside of Xbox's insider program. It offers perks such as Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions for spending a certain amount of money within the first 12 months of opening the account.

This is a shame, I've been able to get some good stuff over the years. Movies, games, audio equipment. It looks like just before they announced the end of the program all the physical movies, games and PlayStation stuff was removed.

@illegal_peanut: Man, these days what doesn't? You can get a mastercard with anything on it, it seems.

@illegal_peanut: I never knew about it myself, but it is their program, and it must not have been doing as well as they thought. Now those that have used it and may have accumulated a lot of points now have to rush and redeem them and it may be on stuff that they may not want as said the premium rewards may have been removed. I do not use credit cards as it can be a boon or your worse enemy especially if the APR is high. Never heard of Sony PlayStation Stars either.

Sony seems to flat out hate their user base more and more every day. It's rather unique.

@BloodMist: Personally I've felt this to be the fact for multiple generations now. This is all revenge for the majority of people not paying $599.99 for PS3's at launch.

@mcnichoj: that’s one of the most nonsensical things I’ve ever read on here. Logic tells me that there’s no possible way you can be serious. Then reality sets in and I remember that this is the internet, where “Sony getting revenge on people for not buying the $600 PS3” is something that people are actually capable of believing.

Gen Z is really rubbing off on people.

@joecollin:It's an incredibly obvious joke but paired with a real sentiment.
idk wtf your post is though, crying about an obvious joke and then taking a random left field pot shot at Gen Z? That's ironically an incredibly Gen Z thing to do.

@mcnichoj: I missed the part where there was any crying. I did make a couple statements though. Comprehension must not be your strong suit. I stand by what I said.

@pillarrocks: The card is rigged for you to more expensive stuff if you wanted to redeem more. With these types of cards there is always a angle.

Just checked my balance, had about 850 points expired due to "inactivity". Which is odd because its supposed linked to PSN account and that's where I've been getting the points to begin with, and definitely have not been inactive. But for all the $100s I've spent, that 850 points is about a $5 Panera gift card. Not too worried to see the program gone.

I was pissed at first, because I thought the email I got was talking about the Stars program, but then I remembered they were two different things. I had just earned enough for a $20 store credit when the Stars thing disappeared. They’ve been working on fixing that for too long. They screwed everyone over during the Days of Play deals. It’s interesting timing for the Stars program to suddenly be “experiencing issues” not too long before a big sale. People better at least retroactively get points for their purchases.

@stickemup: PS Stars is absolutely not worth anything either. Digital collectibles not no one but you can see, why? Sure, you might be able to get some PSN credit (collect the 50 coins for doing the easy stuff) but to get anything worthwhile you have to spend your own money. You'd be better off just getting an Amazon branded credit card (5% cash back) and just buying PSN cards. Its like those coupon books you get in the mail that boast "over $10,000 in savings!" when you'd have to spend over $700,000 real money to actually get that $10k benefit.

@BIG_BOSS_927: This is a pretty ridiculous comment. For one thing, you’re getting points for doing incredibly easy things like just starting a game up, and it’s not like the stars program costs anything. You also get extra points for games you were going to buy anyways. Once you get a certain amount of points, you can trade those for a PSN giftcard, which renders your “you have to spend your own money to get anything worthwhile” statement redundant. There are tons of great games that go on sale for $20, or you can just give yourself a $20 discount on something better. I’ve earned enough points for two $20 gift cards, just by doing stuff I was going to do anyways. That’s entirely different than getting a credit card. Your argument is absurd.

@stickemup: Depends on how you look at it and what one expects. You may say it is fine, but others might think not.

@stickemup: Its neither ridiculous nor absurd, its simply math. The 50 coins you get to try games, etc would take years to accumulate to the $20, and that's it they don't expire. Let me check if the... oh, yeah, program is still down and inaccessible. The return on things you actually buy are just as minuscule. Buy a game for $15, get the equivalent of $0.50 in coins. Of course, if you're buying these anyway, that's something at least. But the point remains that you actually did spend your own money to get that $40 back, and it was much more than if you had just had a 5% cash back credit card that didn't lock your rewards on PSN. Good for you, glad you think its working out for you, but try the math sometime and you'll see who is truly absurb.

Good thing I never fell into the trap of signing up for one of those credit cards. It'd be useless to me without the rewards program

@definer0: no they haven't. There's been an issue with Stars that has been on their support page for over a week now. The Stars icon has reappeared in the app, even though it's still down and says the same thing. No one seems to be able to use their eyes or fingers to go the extra w steps to get the correct information -including the media, who have tried to claim the same

@Msirbono: Even if they get it fixed would they retroactively go back and add the points for the stuff people already brought or they will add points going forward from the point that system was fixed.

@Msirbono: If you can use it as advertised, can't use it as intended, can't use it to redeem your credits, can't use it to even check your progress or get more coins... then it might as well be gone without a trace. Its a quite lackluster and nearly pointless program anyway. There is really minimal benefit to the consumer, I'm not sure what the point is other than to engage players, that were already playing anyway.
