Sony severs ties with PlayStation All-Stars developer

Fate of SuperBot unclear; Sony Santa Monica Studio will handle PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Sony has severed all ties with California-based SuperBot Entertainment, the developer it set up specifically to make last year's underperforming brawler PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

No Caption Provided

The news comes a fortnight after SuperBot laid off a batch of its staff, and the studio's long-term prospects are unclear. "We don't have a reduction plan as of yet, however it is unlikely we can continue with our current work force for an extended period of time," said SuperBot boss David Yang to Kotaku.

"We are still working things out and hope to continue on with as many of us as possible," he added.

Sony's Santa Monica Studio, which assisted with the development of PlayStation All-Stars, will now shepherd the game and all further downloadable content.

Both Sony and SuperBot said in statements that the split was cordial. "Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm that the working agreement with developer SuperBot Entertainment has amicably ended," said Sony. "We have had a positive working relationship with this talented studio, and wish them the best of success in their next endeavor."

Yang said, "SuperBot Entertainment can confirm that the relationship with SCEA has ended on good terms. We are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Sony on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, and are extremely proud of the work we have done. SuperBot Entertainment will continue working on projects that reflect our passion for games and our commitment to creating award winning titles. We are very excited about beginning the next chapter of our future and invite all of our fans and supporters to follow our journey."

Two additional characters for PlayStation All-Stars were announced at the end of 2012, but there have been no subsequent announcements since then.

One thing that is impossible to ignore in this game is its idiotic onslaught of paid DLC. Look, we all know that Sony wanted to make a Smash Bros-esque game...the least they could have done is give us all the content we rightfully deserve for BUYING the game. Nintendo doesn't pull that shit!

Smash Bros was an homage to the fans; a lot of people got what they wanted out of it.
Playstation All-Stars SHOULD be an homage to the fans that have been supporting Sony for so long; however the character roster and in-game content is so lacking that it just fails miserably at appealing to a larger audience.

I don't want to say that they put no effort into the game, however they should have put WAY more thought into this. This should have been the game that became an instant classic for Sony, but they blew it. As a fan of both Sony and Nintendo, I just want to see both of them thrive and it's so painful to watch Sony as a gaming company fail on so many levels.

Here's hoping that they'll actually learn from this mistake of a game.

I thought it was a good game... /:

And you smash fan boys can shut it. Both this and SSB are great games. >_> I don't see why people get so worked up over clone games, especially decent clone games. What's wrong with getting new ones?

Fanboy logic = neurotic pre-teen justin bieber fans...

One of the major flaws the german version had was the inconsistency in subtitles and spoken languages.

When it's a game that is designed for the whole family it's just right out strange and weird when a german voice actor of a character talks to an english speaking voice actor (to add insult to injury, some of the english VA's in the german version HAVE subtitles, some other again, NOT) and it looks like everybody initially speaks each others language. That concept is more than risky and absolutely nothing I'd want to explain my 6 year old son if I had one. Not to mention again that it doesn't come off as very professional again doing it like this.

This company got off too easy. When I heard that the score system would be entirely be super moves I know this game would be bad. 1)So you have to use a super move that kills in one hit which means you cant sneak in and hit a player that took a lot of damage making imbalance between characters more of a problem. 2)Killing an enemy character doesnt feel satisfying because it only took one hit. 3)The content in Battle Royal is no where close to that in Smash Bros Brawl. 4)A reporter on youtube once asked a high ranking Super Bot employee about his fighting game experience to which he said his friend once got 4th place in a Street Fighter Tournament.

@hatieshorrer Answers to your criticisms:

1) Players can't camp out in corners and kill-steal. It encourages them to get involved.
2) Killing enemy characters feels incredibly satisfying because it took a long time to GET to that one hit. On the flipside, missing with a super makes you cringe because it took so long to get there (so it's wonderful when you make an opponent miss with their supers).
3) Agreed. That lost sales for a ton of people I spoke to online. No secret characters, only one unlockable costume each, awful story mode (narration over stills and not even good narration) and a ton of lousy "titles" for online play. They treated single-player like a glorified tutorial, with a final boss that couldn't even kill you.
4) "A high ranking Super Bot employee"? You know these guys actually hired fighting game tournament players to help with balancing issues, right?

They had plenty of fighting game experience, making and playing. Annoyingly, that's one of the problems with the game. PSASBR is the game you get when you take what SHOULD be a fun, bright and appealing-to-all-ages kind of game and put it in the hands of a bunch of tournament players; an arseload of focus on the multiplayer and nothing else.

@Guest1001@hatieshorrer

1)Corner camping-you couldnt do that on Smash Bros. ether but in Battle Royale you can focus on the weakest play to get specials and no one can stop you by kill stealing.

2)Im shocked because I always felt lucky. Like it happened to be at a time when no one was watching me.

4)The youtube video was titled "Hardcore Smash Bros. Fan Interviews PlayStation All-Stars Developer". Dont let the title discourage you he actually asked some good questions.

@Guest1001 @hatieshorrer The fact they sold it at $60 is a crime. $30 is more reasonable when it's not even half as valuable as Smash Bros.

Isn't SuperBot a company primarily made up of developers from other companies? I know at least a few were from NamcoBandai. I think they'll be okay. The real question is if they're not doing All-Stars but they're still "working things out", what are they planning on doing?

I dunno, one of the reasons I didn't pick up the game was because of the characters, there were none that I really liked and they seemed to clash too much with each other. I almost think the game would've done better if they had all original characters instead of going and doing a crossover game. Just because it works for Nintendo doesn't mean it's gonna work for you, Sony.

Wish SuperBot the best of luck. It's really tough to jump through all the hoops Sony 1st party has you jump through just to delivery exactly what was requested and be dropped.

@Maxmus050 I am an Xbox owner and tell me what exclusive Xbox characters will be featured? Marcus Fenix, Master Chief and the hero from Fable? Plus if it is PlayStation All Stars, why the hell do they have Big Daddy, Dante, Heihachi and Raiden? Those characters are shown in Xbox 360 too. They do not simply belong to Sony at all.

I wonder how much more PSABR would have sold if Sony didn't use an online pass for the game. I know I would have bought it new if they didn't push their luck with that policy.

Yeah, the split itself may have been cordial, but I bet the reasons for the parting aren't positive. Not when Sony seems to have a habit of buying every studio that does them a good turn.

Never really got interested in this game. Gameplay looks like it gets stale, especially with only being to kill people in their special modes or whatever, and only a few characters I actually like. It also seemed like they just through in some characters because they were either desperate or just putting in any character they could think of, like both evil and felt really unnecessary. Also heard from some of my friends that actually played the game that it isnt that great. I guess if I'm going to get this game I'll wait for it to be 20 or 30 bucks.

i love this game only issue i have with it is the way it wants to connect to other players... when i have a NAT 1 going it wont connect to other ppl, all my other games do and do better that way. so if i want to play online with it i have to revert my net to a NAT 3 which makes things laggy and cuts you off so your lucky if you can finish a match although atleast you can some what play online.

@funny16 @IC3_C0LD_ZERO He doesn't say they should make it similiar, he's just pointing to the obvious lack of content and unlockables like Secret Stages and / or Characters which SSBB indeed has and every good game SHOULD have NOT only as DLC.

Hm well, maybe this means now no broken patches anymore that makes the game unplayable for the whole EU / PAL-Regions cause we can't get past the Bluepoint Logo Screen anymore ;)

And before you start, yes, it has already been fixed a while ago, but letting a problem like this occur at all for puting NTSC Codes on PAL versions doesn't reek of professionalism ;)

It would be nice to plan things out before the game is released in a contract so these Indi teams don't go by the wayside.

It is too bad that this game didn't do better. I kinda hoped that it would have at least found some success on PS3. But maybe in a effort to do someting a bit different than SSBB series.

Hope the folks at superbot will find new jobs. Maybe they could try to develop something for Nintendo Wii u.

The game is actually pretty cool to play, when you get your friends together (locally).
Problem are DLCs. It needs much more characters and for gamings sake a more beautiful menu.

I am done with modern gaming. I am sick of the constant DLC crap, I am tired of online passes, tired of multiplayer shoved into everything when it's not needed. I am having a better time playing NES games than I am playing modern games. Atleast when I buy a NES game I get the entire game, when I buy a modern game I get 1/4 of the game with the rest as DLC to be bought and most of it is already on the disc I paid for.

I am DONE. No More, just NO MORE.

I used to get excited when next gen comes, now I just don't care.

@suprsolider I have 91 games on my Steam account alone and have never purchased DLC. Not once. Then again I also don't buy games right after released so I haven't spent more than $30 on a game in years. If I get DLC it's a package deal like a GOTY edition.

I wonder why they severed ties. I mean I'd like to know the actual reason why - if it had something to do with PSASBR, or if SuperBot wanted to make other kinds of games outside of the restraints of Sony or something.

But I guess with this news all we know is that SuperBot is no longer with Sony, and it's unclear what is happening to them. And apparently it was a happy break-up.

Is PSASBR the only game SuperBot made? I'm just wondering because I hadn't really been following Sony news for a couple years there.

@Ovirew I don't think it's much of a mystery.

Step 1) Sony puts together SuperBot expressly for making PSAS.

Step 2) PSAS flops pretty brutally.

Step 3) SuperBot lays off a bunch of staff.

Step 4) Sony drops SuperBot.

At least it is going to a competent Studio.

I wasn't expecting to like this game, i have Super Smash Bros. for the Wii and i played Super Smash Bros on the N64 when i was younger and i've never got much into it.

So when i first saw this i wasn't exited about getting a ps clone of a game i didn't enjoy. But i got to play this in a friend's house and was really surprised that although at first sight it looks identical to SSB, it is totally different and i had tons of fun playing it.

So, if Santa Monica Studios makes a new entry to this franschise, i'm going to seriously consider purchasing it.
