Sony Pre-E3 2008: MotorStorm: Pacific Rift Impressions

What's with all the cars hitting each other today? First, there was the traffic-checking in Burnout Revenge. Then Midway's The Wheelman introduces so-called "car melee strikes". Now there's one more for that list, the upcoming MotorStorm: Pacific Rift from Sony and developer Evolution Studios, which I had a chance to spend some time with today. In Pacific Rift, you can attack other vehicles by pressing the square button. Depending on what you're driving, your attack will either be pretty devastating on your opponent (such as when blasting a motorcycle when driving a monster truck) or completely useless (such as in the reverse situation).

As an aside, even though attempting to punch a dune buggy while astride a dirt bike was utterly ineffectual, it nonetheless did not become any less funny to me during my hands-on time with the game.

The build on hand was advertised as roughly 40 percent complete and, though the game had the requisite frame rate problems you'd expect in early code, you can tell that Pacific Rift is going to be a better-looking game than its already impressive predecessor. The setting is a big factor here--gone is the arid dusty desert mountains, replaced instead by a visually rich tropical environment that looks scrumptious, full of muddy expanses and watery sections (the latter of which will help cool your engine when you overdo it with the turbo boost). The track design was full of alternate paths and other fun surprises--including a twisting tank turret hung on the edge of a jump that took me out more than once.

If only those lush areas and interesting tracks could be bigger; Pacific Rift is still going with the circuit racing theme, at least in the track shown in the game today. It seems to me that the wide open, balls-to-the-wall offroad approach that the MotorStorm series has established for itself in its driving model is pretty opposed to the rigid and predictable nature of circuit racing. When Evolution Studios merges its kamikaze driving model to a similarly reckless and unpredictable (read: point-to-point) track design philosophy, we'll have an offroad driving game that nobody will be able to stop.

I think it looks great, but I probably wouldn't buy it, I bought the 1st one with my PS3, back in the Game Drought (wasn't it released late in the UK too?) alongside COD3... Your idea, Brian, is a great one, could you imagine if the whole island was open to the user. Like the mode in Halo 3, you could place markers all over the island to make the track as long or short as you wished. As well as blocking certain routes with objects. Did they make hints of such things at E3? I think he said alot about adventuring the island...

The first Motorstorm was and still is my favorite racing game this generation. Very innovative, fun and visually impressive! I can't wait to see how the second one turns out.

I can't wait! I certainly got my dimes worth out of MotorStorm. I got the add-on tracks (and vehicles,) and have had a great time racing online. I especially enjoy the "friends only" setting, which gives me bragging rights with the people that matter. I will buy this! By the way, please fix the online chat glitches in the new game! It fails way too often!

This game is a real improvement from the previous version. I wish some sort of open end type of Motorstorm (like Enduro type) or a San Andreas type (more than one type of huge environment) would be the way to go in the future of Motorstorm gaming iterations.

I am not a racing fan so I may not get this. I really hated the 1st one but it came free with the PS3. I tried to trade for a different one but Gamestop only giving me 5 bucks for it. Pissed of I went home and was determined to play the game all the way thru then get the 5 bucks worth. I played the game and hated the limited amount of tracks, the only way to pass the game is to have perfect races and that sucked. All I had in my mind was ok F@%#@^ pass this game and get your 5 bucks. Once I did beat the game I noticed the online portionand wondered ah give it a try. That's where FUN began!!! I had studied the tracks so well and knew the vehicles well that in a matter of 3 days I was a GOD on the ranking. The only challenges were other GODS of the game and the game was just awesome there! It was from the other GODS that I learned how to become an even better racer. It's been months since I last played and I tried last weekend and in 5 races I lost my god status. You have to keep up with this game or else rust sets in...

This game looks interesting. I never picked up the first one partially because the demo came out on PSN and that was enough for me. Not because the game was not good (or from the demo look that way) but because I am not a big racer/off road racer game fan. I must admit the physics and robust gameplay is drawing me to this game. Visually Motorstorm: Pacific Rift looks on par with recent PS3 titles showing us the future of the PS3 in the department of, "quality" games. Who knows, because of this game I might just plant another genre in my garden of worthy titles

Whatever. Another narrowed down gimmick ridden one trick racer. I'm tired of these bogus sega style arcade games on offer for 60 bones. I'm still looking for a next gen racer with all inclusive ambition. Think Test Drive Unlimited with weather, a damage model, on and off road, and sans the badittude. Let's see a full experience on offer.

Sounds fun - but now you will get utter newbies always going for monster truck for its attacks instead of motorcycles lolz.

I also plan on buying this game. It seems like the devs had more time to work on this one. Also, their more familar with the hardware.

MotorStorm 1 is my favourite off-road racing game, its obvious I'm dying to the second one and also in my opinion MotorStorm is one of the best overall racing car games if not the best. :]

ya i never played this game either but ive heard its good and will probably pick up this one. Between Midnight Club LA, the next Need for Speed, Burnout Paradise, Gran Turismo 5, and this, I'm looking to be prety broke in the future off racing game purchases alone.

I never did play the first one. Although, I do believe that games like this have so much more potential than any game of its kind has previously been unable to achieve. I hope that this game or series at least makes some ground breaking improvements on what games like this have to offer.

I hope Evolution Studios knows what you are writing in this hands-on because it would help them so much.

What's with all the cars hitting each other today? First, there was the traffic-checking in Burnout Revenge. Then Midway's The Wheelman introduces so-called "car melee strikes". Now there's one more for that list, the upcoming << LINK REMOVED >> from Sony and developer Evolution Studios, which I had a chance to spend some time with today.
