Sony Mentions PS6 Release Year, If Only This Document Weren't Redacted

Sony is arguing that Microsoft owning Call of Duty will seriously hurt its business and the upcoming PS6 console.

In one of its latest CMA responses to Microsoft's planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard (spotted by games industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls), Sony has mentioned its next generation of PlayStation consoles and how potentially losing access to the Call of Duty franchise would have major repercussions on its profits. While the brief line of text doesn't mention an exact date due to a redaction in it, it does confirm that Sony has a new PlayStation planned for a future release, possibly by 2027 or slightly later.

"Microsoft has offered to continue making Activision's games available on PlayStation only until 2027," Sony's comments read. "Likewise, in public comments just on October 26, Microsoft said that it plans to offer Call of Duty on PlayStation only as long as it makes sense. A period until 2027--or some other (possibly shorter) time that Microsoft unilaterally determines makes sense to Microsoft is badly inadequate. By the time that SIE launched the next generation of its PlayStation console (which is likely to occur around REDACTED), it would have lost access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, making it extremely vulnerable to consumer switching and subsequent degradation in its competitiveness."

PlayStation consoles typically have a shelf life of 6-7 years, and the current model, the PlayStation 5, celebrated its second birthday this month. It's not unusual for Sony to be focusing on a PS6 console at this stage in the PS5 lifecycle either, as constant console research and development is something that is practiced by both Xbox and Nintendo.

Sony has been one of the loudest voices opposing Microsoft's acquisition, which it labels as "a game-changer that poses a threat to an industry enjoyed by hundreds of millions of consumers" in its response that has been published by the UK CMA. Sony has been focused on possibly losing access to the lucrative Call of Duty series, while Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spender has regularly downplayed these fears by reiterating that Microsoft is more interested in Activision's mobile game catalog.

In October, Spencer noted that the company plans to treat Call of Duty like Minecraft, and he responded to criticism from Sony concerning Microsoft's future ownership of Call of Duty. "The idea that Activision is all about Call of Duty on console is a construct that might get created by our console competitor," Spencer said.

I think it is much more interesting when Nintendo releases their next hardware console. And how far along they are with it and in developing a new game console.

Maybe it could get a release in 2023 or 2024. The new Zelda game is a big game in spring 2023 but after Zelda, then what?

Maybe the next Switch console, "Switch 2" gets a release in fall 2023 or spring 2024 with a new Mario 3D game or a Mario Kart 9 game.

Metroid Prime 4 is also a big game in the pipeline. But maybe not as influential for launching a new console.

A new Bayonetta game, "Bayonetta 4", for the next Switch and a new Mario Party game and also perhaps another Animal Crossing game is likely. But Smash bros might not get yet another sequel. Maybe, maybe not. If it is an "ultimate" version, then there might not be a sequel.

But R-Type Final did get a sequel eventually i think. Even though i think Irem said R-Type final would be the final game.

New yoshi games and Kirby games would also be expected for a new Switch console, as well as another Paper Mario game and another Fire emblem game. But there are plenty of unplayed games to play right now.

I kind of would like a new and original Zelda game with the same graphical style as in the Link´s Awakening remake. It would be cool. I would buy it instantly i think.

If i would bet on when PS6 gets a release, i would bet on 2027. But maybe 2026 instead? there are no given rules.

It depends on what the other "players" do i guess. Nintendo, Xbox, as well as other players like Google who might try again.

I think Call of Duty affects the gaming world of course. But a franchise which becomes exclusive would kind of get smaller over time i think. Eventually i think Battlefield or other FPS games might emerge as the biggest game.

There was a time when Halo was probably bigger than Call of Duty but it changed around 2007 or 2009. Call of Duty grew bigger than Halo. Maybe because it was available for everyone and not just for Xbox. (Xbox 360)

Sony is looking pathetic with all this. At least they know their market share is built off of the community mindlessly obsessing over them and not as much over intrinsic value. Otherwise they wouldn't be filling their diapers over this.

@noodles227: not that i don't agree with you, Sony do seem to be wriggling a little!!!

i own every PlayStation and thousands of games like so many of us and i love the brand and have had many happy times on each console!!

I've also owned every Microsoft system and again have loved every minute on them!!

The losers here are us gamers if Microsoft gain COD series, obviously some gamers will switch if its Microsoft only to play cod, however I'm sure there will be many others that won't, Sony has a strong exclusive market to date, you've only got to look at God of War.

It still amazes me how Bill took Microsoft to the billion-dollar world dominating cash cow it is from sleeping on the coach in the office.

I think it would be financially stupid not to allow COD on every platform, Microsoft still earn the dollar from each sale if they obtain it.

I wonder if it'll be timed exclusive to sell new hardware.

:)

These international corporations have too much monopoly power and buying power as it is now, much stronger regulations are needed to allow strong competition, in order for consumers to enjoy the fruits of competition and get value for their purchases. But on this.... they should allow MS and A/B deal to go through. As long as Tencent and Sony are so much larger then MS xbox game division, and have an overwhelming lead in the console hardware and software sales..... this would only allow MS to play catch up, not lead. Allowing strong competition, in console platforms for now.

Gamers should not look at this story through the eyes of fanboy glasses, this is not WWE wrestling, it is multi-billion $$ corporations who do not give a rats ass about us gamers, making deals and taking over companies .... not to make the next great game, but to make the next great profit and whether that includes a great game or not means little. Exclusives are very important for gamers, as is strong health competition.

I don't like Microsoft owning Call of Duty though think Sony has enough first games and third party exclusives that could definitely help them with the PS6 launch in 2026. Sony should definitely revive Killzone, Resistance Fall of Man to have their own third person shooter even though those franchises never revival Call of Duty in popularity and selling enough.

Honestly I don't think any company that makes consoles should be allowed to buy out a popular gaming software company unless safeguards are made to protect competition and not create monopolies. Quite obvious what Microsoft is trying to do and it basically can't beat Sony in the console division and never has so it wants to back door Sony by buying out all the top gaming software makers then exclude Sony from those games. Sony would not be able to be competitive in the console market anymore thus Microsoft would eventually become the #1 console maker and force Sony out. Microsoft should already be facing antitrust proceedings they have too much market share already in the PC division to allow them to continue to buy gaming software companies is creating a vacuum in the competitive market for consoles but unfortunately we are the ones who are going to suffer because Microsoft already has bought many government officials hence why antitrust watchdogs haven't broken the company up even though its clear in the PC business they have a monopoly in many areas . Yeah there is some competition but that competition only makes up about 3% of the market and with the unfair advantages Microsoft gives to PC hardware companies the competition has no chance to ever compete with Microsoft and the consoles will be the same thing if Microsoft gets its way.

Micro$oft's attempted monopoly of the gaming arena is out of control. No, I'm not a Playstation fanboy either. However, with Micro$oft buying out the likes of Bethesda, Arcane, Activision, etc, it's far past time for them to be broken up into smaller companies on antitrust grounds. All these buyouts/mergers serve no purpose other than to limit competition/innovation while driving up prices for consumers. Overall quality of various products/services also suffers greatly. It's bad enough Micro$oft is impossible to 100% boycott no thanks to their literal monopoly in the PC gaming space (DirectX)...

If COD effects Sony that much then this is pathetic!

Sony refuses to make a new Shooter that can compete.

BRING BACK SOCOM,,

~ Make Bungie make a new shooter..

Why on earth Sony didn't negotiate HIDEO KOJIMA

to make a super stealth shooter is a waste.

I'm not so sure about that. If anything is going to have a large impact on PS6 sales, it will be Ryan's massive push into live service gaming (and his general treatment of fans). Nobody is going to want a PS6, or any console for that matter, when you can just play the next great live service game on PC or mobile.

I'm of the opinion this will be the last (good) generation for traditional gaming. The number of multiplat, indie hits, or live service games have long since dwarfed the number of quality exclusives we see released on any one console. Even Nintendo's much vaunted exclusives are being rivaled by third party games. Heck, those exclusives are hitting PC anyway. Might as well just get a good PC going forward.

@Barighm: For me I own both systems as well the past systems from both but Xbox and PS5 does not excite no more and I just boxed them up and just play on my computer systems as the storage system on those consoles are not as flexible as PCs as both are too rigid and that is a turn off. Also I love Steam and all the other store fronts and even Empire but not a lot of love as their support stinks.

@sippio: Took the words out of my mouth, I'm happy with my Steam and Epic collections, but I just don't get the same...I dunno, vibe I guess, that I do with my consoles. And screw mobile, I have 30" monitors and a 72" TV, wtf would I want to play on a 4" screen?! My Switch has never left the docking station (that's a lie, I take it out to put in new games/memory).
