Sonic Mania Gameplay Trailer Reveals The New Green Hill Zone

Watch the newest footage from this year's 2D revival.

Sega today published a new trailer for Sonic Mania that shows off a brand-new area, Green Hill Zone Act 2. It looks aesthetically similar to Green Hill Zone 1, but you'll notice that there are now new item boxes and routes to take, as well as a zipline tool for traversal. Sega has also confirmed a new ability for Sonic, Drop Dash, which allows him to perform a spin dash move immediately after hitting the ground following a jump. New enemies called Hard-Boiled Heavies have also been announced.

You can see the gameplay video in the embed above. If you'd rather see it narrated by Sega, you can watch this video.

Now Playing: Sonic Mania - Green Hill Zone 2 Gameplay

Sonic Mania is scheduled to come out this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch, though a specific release date has not been announced.

A brand-new Sonic game is also in the works, but almost nothing is known about it. We do, however, know it's coming to the same platforms and is also due out this year.

Sega has teased new Sonic reveals for South by Southwest, which takes place later this month. Sonic voice actor Roger Craig Smith and Dr. Robotnik voice actor Mike Pollock will attend a panel on March 16 to share new details.

What I like about the 2D Sonic games is the focus on platforming with the branching paths in each zone. When Sonic went 3D, the gameplay was speed, speed, and more speed through linear levels. Sonic Mania looks like a great homage to the past and I love the new remix music.

Can't wait to get this on my PS4. Playing just about any Sonic games feels right at home on a console then my PC.

The transition into Green Hill Zone Acts 2 always gets me. Can't wait for this game and definitely pumped for that music.

No. Don't like this ONE BIT. All they added is shadows to the scores numbers.

And I was always the one who asked SEGA to return to the roots, to the classic style and gameplay of Sonic 2 and 3. Why can't they strike a balance? It's not that hard. This is just a carbon copy of the original game and won't do.

@Ripper_TV: Well you must have never played a Classic Sonic game then because this has some pretty significant changes, all things considered. I'll give you that the first half part of Green Hill is pretty similar to it's original form. But act 2? You're just throwing a false argument by calling it a "carbon copy of the original game" when you couldn't even bring yourself to watch more than 2 minutes into the video.

Sure would be nice if they stopped re-using Green Hill Zone and start doing something original.

I'm so stoked for this. A must-buy - a silent, functional Sonic.
