Sonic Generations Will Still Be Available After Sonic X Shadow Generations Debuts

Although Sega is delisting Sonic Generations as a standalone title, the game will still be available.

It's become all too common for video game companies to delist some of their older titles once a remaster or a remake hits the market. Even Sega isn't immune from that, as the company still plans to remove the original Sonic Generations before the remaster is released as part of Sonic x Shadow Generations. But that doesn't mean the first version of Sonic Generations will be going away for good.

Via the official Sonic the Hedgehog account on X, Sega has announced that Sonic Generations will be delisted as a standalone title on September 9. However, in the name of preserving the game in its original form, it will still be available in bundles on Stream and Xbox. Gamers who already own Sonic Generations will still be able download the title as well.

Old school gamers also have the option of picking up Sonic Generations for the Xbox 360, which is backwards compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series X. Amazon is currently selling new copies of Sonic Generations for Xbox 360 for only $23, which isn't a bad price for a game soon to be much harder to find.

As for Sonic x Shadow Generations, the remaster of the first game is included alongside a new title, Shadow Generations, and the two titles take place concurrently with each other. Sega will release Sonic x Shadow Generations on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC on October 25.

I mean I understand from a business point of view why they would do that. Like, “Why play ‘X’ video game when ‘Y’ game offers similar content and is cheaper?”. But at the same time you have to realize that Sonic generations is 13 years old. I don't think most people are going to go out of their way to buy a flipping PS3 video game in 2024 over a game that is current.

Still makes me sad thinking about when digital games started coming out and every one thought this would be the greatest thing for gaming. Games would always be available even many years down the road.

Reality set in and it turns out the old physical games now last longer than the digital games do. Even modern physical games are not immune to delisting because most of them are just glorified pieces of plastic that still require a download.

The big game companies have just turned the art and entertainment of gaming into a consumed commody to be used and thrown away.

For Sega, there is no reason to delist Sonic Generations at all. It's a stand alone single player game not requiring any server connection or online play. Even if bundled elsewhere, it should still be available standalone.
