Shenmue 1 & 2 Release Date Confirmed For August

The Dreamcast classics return in August.

Following its apparent leak on the Australian Microsoft Store, Sega has confirmed pricing and release details for the upcoming Shenmue I & II collection. The combo pack will launch for PS4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam on August 21, and it'll retail for the budget price of US $30 / £25 / AU $49.95.

First announced during the Sega Fes fan event earlier this year, the Shenmue I & II collection combines both Dreamcast classics together in one package. The games come with a handful of improvements, although they aren't true HD remakes or remasters. Among the new features players can enjoy are modern and classic control schemes, an updated user interface, scalable screen resolution, and both English and Japanese voiceovers.

Now Playing: Shenmue 1 & 2 Release Date Confirmed - GS News Update

Shenmue was created by famed game designer Yu Suzuki, who directed a number of Sega's arcade hits, including Out Run and Virtua Fighter. The first title originally launched for Dreamcast in 1999. At the time of its release, it had the distinction of being the most expensive video game ever created. Its sequel, Shenmue II, arrived in 2001, although it would only be released on Dreamcast in Europe and Japan. The game would be subsequently ported to the original Xbox the following year.

Both games cast players in the role Ryo Hazuki, a young martial artist on a quest to avenge his father's death and ultimately uncover the secret behind a mysterious relic known as the Dragon Mirror. The titles were renowned for their impressive open world, deep battle system, and variety of minigames. You can learn more about each in GameSpot's original Shenmue review and Shenmue II review.

A third installment in the series, Shenmue III, was announced during Sony's E3 2015 press conference. The game is currently in development for PS4 and PC, and like its predecessors, it is being directed by series creator Yu Suzuki. Shenmue III was originally slated to launch this year, but was delayed into 2019 in order to further refine the game. Publisher Deep Silver recently revealed that Shenmue III will require a whopping 100 GB of storage space on PC.

I'm loving that $30 price. This is definitely getting picked up on 8/21

I really hope it comes out for the Switch. I would much prefer to play these games on the Switch than on PC. Smaller screen could help with the dated visuals etc. As its not a true remaster i think many people forget how badly these games have aged.

I really enjoyed these games when I was like 12. I should still get sucked in by the story and pretty surroundings. Though I remember running around a lot annoyed me and I sucked at driving a forklift. I can't imagine these games have aged too well, nonetheless it will be a blast revisiting and finishing them, so i'm ready for the story in Shenmue III. Thanks for finally letting this happen, and thank you kickstarter funders.

At this point, Yu Suzuki should just go ahead and mutinize the current Sega board and release Dreamcast 2.

@solid_snake1461: You know for the longest I had no idea if Shenmue had a game out there that was like it. Started playing the Yakuza series of games last year and was like "how tf did I miss this!?"

Either way, they still haven't been able to capture Shenmue's combat, or at least I wish the Yakuza combat wasn't so over-the-top and a bit more grounded.

I just hope they add the ability to skip cutscenes in these HD ports.(Since failing in some QTEs will force you to watch some unskippable cutscenes)

100GB? Wow. The originals were like 4 GD-ROMs each for a max of 8GB, or realistically (due to repeated content in discs) closer to 4-5GB total. I can understand higher quality textures, higher quality sound etc., but I didn't expect it to inflate by a factor of 20x. The games didn't even have any FMV...

Played the 1st one back in the day for about 10 hours or so. Thought it was a hot pile of trash then so no point in returning. Plus how it must have aged now but I would imagine there will be a lot people picking it up and pretending to enjoy and say how great it is.

@PETERAKO: I do not own a PS4 but I backed Shenmue 3 through Kickstarter. I want to have Shenmue 1-3 on one console, so I pre-ordered the PS4 version of the game. I currently own a Xbox One and plan on playing Shenmue 1 and 2 on it.

My OG Xbox died just as I started Shenmue II for the first time, and then right after that happened these ports got announced. So I'm excited to finally play through Shenmue II! And then of course III!

I own all 3 consoles but I think Switch (on the go) is the only one I’d actually play this on. Oh well, I guess I’ll buy a PS4 copy just to have for the shelf.

@dashaka: I agree.

These games were great when they came out, but i'm afraid they're going to feel dated. Its not a game I would want to play on Xbone or PS4. My time is limited and I already have a backlog of current gen titles I want to get to. If I had Shenmue I and II on the go though, it would definitely give me a chance to play them again. Otherwise I may pass.

@dvldrvr31684: Yeah, it’s just likely a game I’d play a lot more when I’m out of town, and only sometimes at home. So I’d actually finish it on Switch, as opposed to other games (consoles) getting more of a priority when I’m at home.

It would be odd Xbox to get part 1 and 2 but not ShenMue 3...why is Suzuki not clarifying things up?

@sladakrobot: Cause SEGA is publishing these on all platforms not Suzuki, it has nothing to do with him really apart from SEGA cashing in on him making a sequel.

@gamingdevil800: the publisher is Deep Silver for part 3. Sega is only lending the IP to Yu SUzuki

@sladakrobot: @freedom01 Yes I know which is why I said Suzuki has nothing to do with 1 or 2 cause SEGA is publishing the remaster while Suzuki is making 3 with a different publisher.
