Sega Has No Virtua Fighter 6 Plans Yet

The launch of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown will determine if the long-running fighting game franchise still has a future.

This week's release of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown will decide the future of Sega's fighting game franchise, as Sega's chief producer Seiji Aoki commented on the game and what its release means for a potential Virtua Fighter 6.

"Nothing has been decided yet regarding Virtua Fighter 6, so I cannot make any statement," Aoki said in an interview with Famitsu Magazine that was translated by SiliconEra. "But if you ask me whether I want to create it or not, I do want to create it. This title [Ultimate Showdown] will let us know whether there are demands and potentials for Virtua Fighter. We want to hype it up so it can connect to the next one."

Now Playing: Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown Full Arcade Run

The upcoming PS4 release has been completely remastered using Yakuza studio Ryu ga Gotoku's Dragon Engine and features high-definition upgrades for all 19 fighters, arenas, and cinematics. There's even a downgrade option available if you'd prefer to play the game with 1990s graphics instead.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown released on June 1 for PS4 and PS5 through backwards compatibility, and is available as a June PS Plus game alongside spy adventure Operation Tango and space combat game Star Wars: Squadrons.

For more insight into the game, you can check out our Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown interview with Aoki, in which he talks about the enduring legacy of the fighting game franchise.

Man it's been what, 15 years since the last new VF game and there's no plans at all to make the next one? But yea, that line of thinking is what essentially killed the Darkstalkers series when Capcom tried something similar a few years back.

But you only release it for the PS? Wouldn’t it have been more beneficial to release the game on as many platforms as possible if we’re trying to see if VF still has demand/future? I really want VF 6, VF is my favourite 3D fighter next to DOA.

... Kind of hard to get a good gauge of interest if you don't also release it on Xbox.

@skyhighgam3r: Not really, Xbox has never really been the go to place to gauge a fighting games appeal.

@vfighter: Setting aside that Dead Or Alive was Xbox-exclusive for 2 entire generations - that isn't the point.

The point is they are only releasing it on one platform and completely ignoring Virtua Fighter fans from the other.

My list of ordered playing preference:

MK

DOA

Street Fighter

Tekken

VF

Sega needs to bring a new racer in the likes of Daytona USA & Scud Racer. Would be nice for them to remaster & fix Aliens Colonial Marines & remaster Binary Domain. So many other titles left untouched.

Of all the fighters I wish someone would finally bring back Bloody Roar.

I played Virtua Fighter 5 a lot on the Xbox 360. I prefer it to Tekken and Soul Calibur for 3D fighters, no question. I played VF4 a lot too on the PS2. I will buy the extra pack on PS4 to support the game as well.

Man, this strategy is what killed any chance of a new Darkstalkers. Hopefully it does well enough, but I can't say I'm optimistic.

This game is bare bones. The game without Plus costs $30. I am not familiar with the franchise that much, but from what I hear, Final Showdown had a better package. The game is fifteen years old. If the future of the franchise depends on how this newest iteration does, then that is a shame because outside of Plus, you can get better games elsewhere. Is the gameplay still fun? Yes. It pales in comparison to every other offering out there, budget or not.

We need remasters of the entire series. A collection if you will. And virtua fighter IS the best fighting game. But tekken is the funnest. And soul caliber. And mortal kombat. And injustice. And dragon ball fighterz.

My personal opinion is that VF's gameplay is timeless but its concept belongs to the past. The idea of Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter was to capitalize on the look of virtual reality at the time-- flat shaded polygons, suggesting no-nonsense, military-grade simulation. By the time VF3 arrived, the series was trying to outgrow that idea, but more whimsical competitors were inheriting the market. I would be more happy to pay full price for a remastered collection (physical media, please) than a budget-constrained sequel that only serves to water down the brand.
