Sale Ends Soon: Get $10 Off Any $15+ Game, Save On Pre-Orders At Epic

Plus, a new free game is available.

The Epic Games Store has been ramping up in recent months, grabbing PC exclusivity for major titles like Borderlands 3, acquiring Rocket League developer Psyonix, and taking a firm stance on its plans to acquire more exclusive titles unless competitor Valve increases revenue share for developers. And now the Epic Store is ready to start offering customers some serious discounts on the games it's curated, as it recently launched its first storewide sale.

Dubbed the Epic Mega Sale, the store is offering markdowns up to 75% off on some PC games. In addition, $10 is slashed off the price of any game over $15, including already discounted games and pre-orders, at no cost to the publisher or developer. That encompasses upcoming games like Borderlands 3, one of its biggest exclusives, which you can now pre-order for $50, and the recently announced John Wick game, John Wick Hex, which you can pre-order for $8 instead of $20. Indie classic Journey is now available to pre-order for PC exclusively at Epic; during the Mega Sale, you can secure your copy for just $5, which is an incredible price for the Grammy-nominated title. Newly released open-world space mystery Outer Wilds is available for just $15 right now.

Now Playing: Epic Releases 2019 Roadmap for Epic Games Store - GS News Update

Just purchased something from Epic and wish you'd waited? If you bought a game between May 2 and May 15 in the Epic Store, you'll be refunded the difference between what you paid and the sale price. And if you've pre-ordered a game from the Epic Store that cost more than $15, you'll receive a $10 refund within the next couple of weeks. The only exceptions to the $10 off deal are DLC, game add-ons, season passes, and in-game purchases, such as V-bucks in Fortnite.

In addition to all the store-wide discounts, Epic announced its free biweekly game deal is expanding during the Mega Sale, which runs now through June 13. In that time period, a free game will be given away every week--the current freebie is Kingdom: New Lands.

Dates for Steam's 2019 Summer Sale have leaked (once again)--it'll start June 25 and last two weeks--so Epic's Mega Sale seems strategically timed to precede that one. While Steam's sale will no doubt have the greater volume of games, Epic's deals (particularly the $10 off one) are nothing to sneeze at, and it's a good chance to grab cheaper pre-orders on upcoming games and some free PC titles. Either way, June is gearing up to be a great month for PC gamers on a budget.

Thank god this comment section isnt littered with anti Epic rants. I understand the criticism but I honestly believe its a lot of feigned outrage.

Some people need that Epic d*ck in their life. Pitchford is probably all over that each week. I will not buy into the hype though because certain games will be on Steam later. It is still the platform that I use the most. But it is not the only one.

Go Epic go!

Got Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls. and it's just 10$ each damn it.

I specifically like that the discount is coming FROM Epic money. Thus, the developers still get the same cut. This is unheard of. Kudos to Epic on that and shame on Valve.

Sale looks really good. Loving the free games so far. I love developers getting a bigger cut most though because game development is rough and I want more people to succeed. People pretend to care when something like Telltale happens but then they throw a hissy fit over Epic creating a new store where devs can get a fairer shake.

Weird to see it excluded (but this is down to Ubisoft, not Epic)

I might have purchased something through this sale despite Epic's policy issues if their store wasn't complete and utter bollocks. It is no easy feat to design a store that somehow makes Origin and Uplay look like masterful pieces of software by comparison but Epic has done just that. Some basic things that were missing as I tried to take advantage of this sale: Game pages don't list the genre of a title, its developer, publisher, or any other standard pieces of information that might allow me to make an informed purchase. User reviews are not present. User created tags are not present. User ratings are not present, nor are links to critic reviews or ratings. No per game forums or per game discussions. No way for developers to post updates and news. Just overall a major lack of information that makes it all but impossible to make an informed purchase without having to first visit numerous other sites. When you've made a less customer friendly piece of software than EA you have failed.

@bigbluebustn: Well, that's how it goes. You're not entitled to any price cuts. Sales always happen for a specific time frame, and if you miss it then that's bad luck. So what Epic is doing is very nice of them, and certainly makes for good PR. Which is all they're focussing on now. But to expect that everyone does that is ridiculous.

I still remember when I bought epic games magazine, it has CD/DVD demo games, on those days you can't just buy every game you see, you need to try a demo, and decide what you going to buy next time.

Epic games still cool as old time :D

@ Go at least play games.

Yup, no choice for you. You can only buy from the eshop with its overpriced games, lack of features and the possibility that you lose access to all your purchased games a generation down the line.

@Atzenkiller: Steam has stated that if they ever go out of business they will untether the DRM of all Steam games from Steam.

You wouldn't be able to download them again, but they would not cease functioning like every other store's games (except GOG) would.

@Thanatos2k: That's great, for everyone who's downloaded his whole collection. But not being able to download the games any longer pretty much means that they're no longer available. So this phrase is completely meaningless.

@Atzenkiller: What does that even mean. Who the hell would buy games and not download them?

I mean, it's better than a physical version - they stop selling it and it's "no longer available." Your console no longer functions due to age and it's "no longer available." But PC games have a far, far, far, far longer period of availability than physical games do.

It's baffling that you're pretending like this is some kind of negative.

@Thanatos2k: Are you telling me that you have downloaded and installed every single game you've ever bought from Steam on your PC right now and at all times? Just thinking about the gigantic size of AAA videogames today, how many modern games would you be able to fit on your hard drives?

What would you do if Steam suddenly announced that it would shut down? Buy a bunch of hard drives to download and store all those hundreds of games you've bought over the years on them? Don't be ridiculous. Its nice, I guess, to be able to store some of your favorite games that way if the platform ever shuts down, but most of your collection will be gone for good and you won't get your money back either. Unless you really are some hoarder who does try to download every single game he's ever bought on there. I'd rather just download one of those games again whenever I actually want to play them. Hardly illegal if you've already payed for it before. And I can do the same for any other crappy digital game store after it shuts down.

@Atzenkiller: Sure, I'd back up my stuff. I'd burn them to a series of cheap discs if need be. I'm not sure why you think this is something people wouldn't do.

It's not like console games would keep working if Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo went under. Games would no longer be able to update from the version on the disc, which means no patches and more specifically - no day one patches which most games at this point are completely inoperable without. And games bought digitally would also simply vanish when the console breaks. However, on PC, get a new computer and you can still download your games.

I'm still not sure what your point is.

@Thanatos2k: Of course they would: you go online with your pc and download a game and emulator to run it on. I've already mentioned that, haven't I? But if you feel like actually going through the hassle of downloading and storing hundreds of games on external drives, then do that. Not like anyone's gonna stop. All I was pointing out is that is makes zero sense in the digital age when anything's readily available and being preserved through torrents and file sharing sites. Those are doing a much better job than Sony & co. ever could. Probably because they're not doing it for the money.

And yes, if you download any games that had patches, then those games are either already pre patched or you can patch them yourself with the patches provided. It's no rocket science.

@Atzenkiller: News came out a few weeks back that Nintendo decided to close down the Wii and WiiU eshop.

Meaning you won't be able to grab anything on the store anymore.

No redownloading of anything you've bought.

So effectively your eshop purchases become worthless once the generation is over and the next one starts.

@R4gn4r0k: What do you want me to say? The Switch can't play Wii games, can it? And did the Wii even have any hard drive to store games on? What exactly could you buy in that store?

I've bought a bunch of PS3 games on the PSN store, mainly from sales since they're always cheaper elsewhere otherwise. But I won't cry over it if Sony eventually stop letting you download those games because I don't even have working PS3 anymore or a controller. You wanna play games from 2 console gens ago then download an emulator. It's not even piracy since you've bought the game at some point, right? You can't expect that everything will be available forever if there's not even hardware available to play it on.

But I do expect that everything being released from now will be availabe for a long time since the PS5 will have backwards compatibility again. Which means you'll get the same situation as with PC games, where any PC can still run games that came out 10 or 20 years ago. And aside from that there's remasters, so even if I could get out my old PS3 to play some old games again, why would I if there's an upgraded version available for the PS4? Even if I have to pay for it again.

Ultimately you're always throwing money out the window when you're spending it on videogames. You're not investing in some resource that only keeps getting mroe valuable with time. Even any collector's edition garbage is worth shit nowadays cause anyone can own it if he's will to throw money away. And if you've got issues with that, then why are you still buying videogames? Just accept it as a loss in exchange for consuming some media. Cinemas don't let you watch a movie again only because you've payed for it once, so you should be glad that videogames still let you do that.

@Thanatos2k: Yeah, I'm sure they're going broke from it. Or they're actually still making plenty of profits even with sales likes that, cause running a digital games delivers service like this is like a license to print money. You completely avoid retail and their 50% or so cut, no shipping and physical production cost, etc., etc. How do you think Steam got as big as it is and its CEO became one of the richest guys on the planet? Yeah, they must have really had a hard time staying competitive with the major advantages they have over anyone selling their stuff through retail.

@Thanatos2k: I'm not sure you understood your own sentence. "If that's the case" doesn't mean it is. But even if it was, it's a marketing campaign. Same as companies spend lots of money on advertising to draw in more customers. You spend money to make back more later. And I highly doubt a sale like this could get them in trouble.

@Bread_or_Decide: This isn't so much a sale, as a round of Epic-funded discounts with a few games on sale.

Normal sales (for Steam and Nintendo) have the publishers set the discount and take the hit.
