Rockstar builds up Steam

Publisher's entire back catalog of PC titles now available through Valve's online digital distribution service.

As digital distribution's popularity continues to grow, so too does the number of publishers offering their games through download services. Today, Rockstar Games announced it would be offering its entire back catalog of PC games through Valve's popular digital distribution service, Steam.

Rockstar's support for Steam includes 10 games. Among that number are the complete Grand Theft Auto series, ranging from the original GTA through Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, as well as Midnight Club II, Max Payne, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, Manhunt, and Wild Metal Country.

Gamers who prefer to shop in bulk can purchase the entire Rockstar Collection for $59.95 or can get just the GTA Collection for $29.95. Since Rockstar has previously made GTA, GTA2, and Wild Metal Country available as free downloads through its Classics series, the three games are available only through Steam as part of their respective bundles.

Promoting the addition of Rockstar's PC games, Valve is also offering a 10 percent discount on all of the publisher's titles for the first week.

Downloaded the GTA pack, works great except one thing... the San Andreas version can't be downgraded for mods. I was really disappointed when I couldn't load SA: MP and various other mods.

I am interested. More Companys should be like Rockstar. Howw often do you see companies letting you download for free any more. I hope Midway, Neversoft, and Bungie follow in the foot steps of Rockstar.(Selfless Bonus)

There needs to be a company that resells old games. Reprints CDs for them too. As much as steam is a nice system I prefer having a hard copy. Its crazy no one has done it on any large scale. They could make a fortune. Try and find Total Annihilation: Core Contingency. It can be found on Amazon and ebay for like $80-$100+ which is crazy for a 10+ year old game that cost $30 bundled with the original TA to start with. Same for soooo many other games. Star trek: bridge commander? good luck. maybe a store will have some old copys laying around if your lucky. There are a few companys that have done so. "Sold Out Software" is who I got my copy of Homeworld from. It just needs to be larger. As to the valve thing. My only real grip with them is there is no web page payment system. I don't like being forced to put my credit card info into the Steam App window. I would much prefer a web based purchase with a CD key unlock. Like useing a half-life key to get half-life on Steam. Considering I also already have max payne I give this a resounding 'meh.'

They should add all the old PC rpgs and other PC games are are extremely hard to find in stores, especially since GS/EB no longer accept PC trade ins, which really hurt the gamer imo since we have to now jump through hoops and search ebay so we can find a old game that we want to pick up and play again or never played to begin with. I can easily still find GTA games and Max payne, etc etc in my local gaming stores....

This means nothing to me. Start adding more classic games that are hard to find in stores like Redneck Rampage and Daggerfall.

Valve & Steam have nothing whatever to do with IGN or Gamespot financially. I'm really not sure where people dream up this sort of rubbish.

I love Steam! I wish that games in multiplayer would load the maps faster, but that also could be my comp. Other than that, Steam is a great service

Gamespot has nothing to do with IGN... Gamecpot is Cnet while IGN is owned by the insidious News Corporation. EA is also independent, and while they have made some bad choices with some of their games, and I can never forgive them for destroying the SimCity francise (the first game I ever played, and only one I ever really liked), they aren't evil like News Corp is.

Steam is like Xbox live for the PC but free to play on unlike Live. I hope the service continues growing more and start to get games that will implant steam into them now. And should also make some of the more popular content downloads aviable.

I have 204 games off STEAM (this includes the Rockstar bundle).. all of the games run well.. I just don't get the reason why people hate the service. I've heard people loosing their accounts etc, but in the years since STEAM released, I have kept the same account and never had my account "stolen" or "locked". Either I'm "lucky", or people who get it "stolen" or "locked" are doing something wrong. I hardly even go the stores anymore due to digital distribution. Heck, even for hardware, I just use the Net.. I pay at the pump, I file my taxes online, I do my banking online.. etc.. All I need is a job based at home and I can literally live my entire existence at home without ever leaving my house. Man, does that sound creepy.. I wonder who has done that.. lol

Steam haters are silly. The service is way, way better now. The line-up is great. And as far as download speeds, I've got buddies in California, Alaska and Toronto using it, and last time we all downloaded a huge file it was like a race of who's broadband connection was fastest, because Steam was pushing everyone files incredibly fast.

i prefer buy the software in a disk but that cos i have a 384mbts conection, so a 4gb game its like 3 days (120-140 mb hour), i cant ivent wait 4 hours i'm so impatient XDDDD, i pruff the service with some old gamez and it give you a relly good boost in the bandwith my 384 was downloading like 42kb per second, so if you got a good 4mb its a good choice....

quote from Empnova:- "Steam is quite possibly my LEAST favourite program installed on my computer....I can't believe that Valve can't think of a more convenient and efficient system to deliver large files through the internet. " I bought the full GTA Pack from Steam earlier on today and on a 4MB line I've already downloaded both GTA3 & Vice City in about 5 hours using full bandwidth. I'm really not sure how much more 'efficient' Steam could be than that . Perhaps you need to look at your computer router/DSL/anti virus settings if you aren't getting a fast download speed, because the fault is almost certainly at your end rather than the Steam content Servers. As for the guy going on about his Steam being corrupted, download the installer from www.steampowered.com again and run it and it will repair the application (amazing what looking on the internet does for one). The Direct2drive is only available in certain countries, the Steam distribution is international save for manhunt AFAIK.

The other thing I don't really understand about this 'News Release', is that this package has been available on www.Direct2Drive.com for a couple weeks. While it's great to see it on Steam too, why wasnt there a blurb about it on the other download site too? Not to mention it's 44.95 on direct2drive and 54.99 on steam. I'm guessing they didnt report it there since it's part of the IGN network.......

I remember the day steam was released. The whole community was up all night waiting for the installer to release and when it finally did we were met with one hell of a buggy program. I used to hate it, but its a cool feeling to see how far its come after all these years.

That would be good, IF steam actually worked for me. It used to, then one day it corrupted itself and now it won't update or anything, and when It used to work I'd only get about 3KB/s download speed (and I usually get 350KB/s down). Steam SUCKS. The less games that get Reamed by Steam the better
