Rock Band song library hits 1,000

Harmonix and MTV Games reach milestone between on-disc, downloadable tracks for rhythm franchise.

When Rock Band was first announced in April 2007, Harmonix founder Alex Rigopoulos laid out his ambition for the project, saying the developer had "very big plans for building out a huge library of online expansion content." That ambition has been soundly realized, as this week the Rock Band platform reached a new milestone, with 1,000 songs available on disc or as downloadable content.

Rock Band will never sport a true
Rock Band will never sport a true "never-ending setlist," but it gets a little closer every week.

That tally spans songs from Rock Band, Rock Band 2, Lego Rock Band, the PSP adaptation Rock Band Unplugged, and hundreds of downloadable songs that can be played across multiple games. It also includes the retail-exclusive AC/DC track pack's 18 songs, but omits The Beatles: Rock Band, as that game and its downloadable content are not compatible with the rest of the Rock Band series. A full list of Rock Band's 1,000 songs is available on the game's official Web site.

Rock Band's catalog has even surpassed that of its main competition (and Harmonix's previous project), Guitar Hero. Activision's official Guitar Hero music catalog lists roughly 830 songs available across the five main installments of the series, spin-offs like Band Hero and Guitar Hero Rocks the '80s, the Guitar Hero On Tour DS games, band-specific titles for Aerosmith and Metallica, and downloadable offerings. The Activision catalog page includes neither DJ Hero nor Guitar Hero: Van Halen, which includes 44 tracks and will be released in stores December 22. (The game was also sent out early to purchasers of Guitar Hero 5 as part of a since-expired promotion.)

Since Rock Band debuted November 20, 2007, Harmonix has supported the game with 105 consecutive weeks of new downloadable content. The offerings run the gamut from full album downloads like Judas Priests' Screaming for Vengeance to novelty freebies like Stephen & the Colberts' faux '80s stalker anthem "Charlene (I'm Right Behind You)."

At the moment, Pearl Jam is the best represented band in the series, with 25 songs available for download, and a 26th track, "Alive," available on the Rock Band 2 setlist. The Foo Fighters are close behind with 25 songs (22 downloadable and one on-disc track for each console installment of the series). That gap is likely to expand, as Pearl Jam in May invited fans to vote on their favorite versions of more than 40 different songs for inclusion in an unspecified "Rock Band project" to be released in 2010.

The Seattle rockers won't be the only ones seeing a surge in the Rock Band game's downloadable catalog. Harmonix and MTV Games have announced a do-it-yourself way for bands to get their music into the game with the Rock Band Network Music Store. When that project does launch (it's currently slated as "coming soon"), the companies said it will "exponentially increase the number of songs available."

i only played rockband for the first time(not including guitar hero, playing that since 2) in september with the beatles rockband, which i pre ordered the day i saw it at e3, it made me love the beatles, which i now do, even if there 30 years before i was born, and im finally learning real guitar, mostly beatles songs, so know that i have a rockband game, ill get rb3 cause i know the songs are better than gh, so that tells you these games can have an effect on if people want to learn instoments and play music, so games like these are a good thing, but no thanks of mine are givvin to MTV, they suck, alot

I liked RB, it was fun and still is if you play with friends, but I can see some people taking it too far and thinking they're real musicians, mostly kids that have a lot of free time on their hands.

@mjc0961 The only game that can't play DLC across one another is TB:RB, and that's only because it's made with a different game engine.. That's not bad when you take into account Guitar Hero's DLC only working on GH:WT and GH5, and that's before mentioning how it costs a fee to be allowed to play old DLC on GH5.

@SalFlame: You do realize, for many people, it is cheaper to play RB2 than to buy a real Guitar/Drum set and have to pay to keep it in playable shape. Really, it's a GAME. Lighten up, I'm sure it takes many people upwards towards a year to get good at a game such as halo, or should they all become space marines instead?

I love this. Instead of having "Rock Band 5: Space Tour" and throwing in these songs, Harmonix instead keeps RB2 and releases tons of DLC for it. Incredible, I give huge props to Harmonix for staying true to the fans and taking their TIME making RB3 and giving us loads of DLC while we wait. However, in those 1,000 DLC songs, there is not one Nightwish song, WHY?? Oh well. Oh, and @john221978: It's more than likely that RB3 will be backwards-compatible with RB2 and RB, because RB2 is backwards-compatible with RB. A good chunk of the songs available for download were originally available for the original RB.

Awesome. I must say, although I prefer Guitar Hero, Rock Band definitely triumphs in terms of DLC, Guitar Hero have released some truly shocking songs. The Derek Trucks Band? Wow... fun... They both need more metal, I mean lets face it, metal is much more fun to play. Personally, I would love to play some Slipknot songs on the drums.

Just give me some Hinder, Nightwish, In This Moment, Escape the Fate, Skillet, Red, and Pillar. And better Rob Zombie songs and where on EARTH is Money For Nothing? That's one of the greatest rock songs ever! I don't care which franchise gets it! I want my Money For Nothing!

Its just a shame they cant be sharing the Song DLC love with the IPhone counterpart. So far the Rock Band for IPhones DLC is lackluster at best.

@guitardude1243 I understand where you're coming from, this being from a guy who can easily Gold Star most of the Rock Band catalog on Guitar. However, us rhythm gamers don't put ourselves under the false pretense that we're real musicians.. at least, I don't. We play for fun, just like any other game. Besides, being good at a rhythm game and an instrument are completely different.. one involves a plastic controller, the other a finely tuned tool made to produce sound. Obviously learning an actual instrument is more productive and rewarding, but in the end it's all about fun. If people get that through a video game more so than an instrument, so be it. Besides, these elitist morons are gamers just like anyone else on this site or they wouldn't be here. For them to say what they say contradicts their entire agenda. Like others have said, playing as a marine in Call of Duty doesn't make you a marine, but no one ever says "Instead of investing hours into MW2, why not just pick up an M16 and join the army, you bunch of losers?", because the analogy is ridiculous.

@ bassplayer275 One, I hate halo. Another overrated piece of crap. Two the songs on this are extremely boring and easy. Any REAL musician would find this completely useless and time wasting. so yes you being a musician has been nullified. Don't talk about my ego when you go off naming instruments. I can play every instrument you named plus more. I am just tired of this crap. It got so boring.

Wow, over a thousand. I am not even a fan of the series (but i don't flame people that are) and I am extremely impressed by that, i wish more games would put that much overtime into adding on to the experience like these people do

@cardkoda Oh, ok. So because I love Rock Band, I guess that nullifies the fact that I play bass, guitar and piano... not to mention a few kinds of African drums and percussion... is that right? Son, there are a great many of us RB fans who actually ARE musicians. Then again, there are also many of us who are not. But we all know we're just playing a game. Try not to get so caught up in your own ego, kid. Go back to Halo.

Rock Band triumphs over Guitar Hero/Band Hero yet again XD. Also yes 1000 songs is alot of money, but just think of those other people that buy MP3 downloads online. Its not like you have to buy them all, you could buy several every month. My library still isnt a quarter of that 1k lol.

@2bitSmOkEy Most people don't play rhythm games to "pretend" to play music. They play them for the fun and the challenge, like me.

I've owned Rock Band since early 2008. I've yet to buy a single song for it. The amount of money that some games cost you when you factor in DLC's is ridiculous. What's worse, the trend is only becoming more and more common. For example, Dragon Age's $7 DLC that provides the user with 30-60 minutes of content. That's pathetic for $7.

This is why Iove Rock Band over Guitar Hero. You can just download the songs on DLC instead of having to go out and buy tons of crappy derivative "games" which are simply glorified expansion packs.

@cardkoda I used to be addicted to guitar hero and rock band, and never once did I entertain the illusion I'm a real musician. Do you think you are really a sports player when you play a sports game? Or a marine in a military game? A wizard in an RPG? They're games. You play them to have fun. Try it.

Add on songs for Guitar Hero SUCK, no good heavy metal and all of those bands are bands that no one has heard of. If they can make a Disturbed track pack or a Black Tide track pack, or even a Slipknot track pack, then that would satisfy a LOT of people and guess what, it'll bring in money.

Being a guitarist, I consider my fellow musicians who berate the rhythm genre, not as musicians at all, but rather as losers. Half of the people who say these things anyways are sub-par and if they are good they will never go anywhere. So anybody who feels insulted by these punks shouldn't be, they are not people who enjoy music for what it really is.

@SocialAnXieTy I definitely see your point of playing it for enjoyment, but what noirsake and I are saying still remains true. If I had said what he said, though, I would have re phrased it significantly. What I believe what makes people say things like that is more the fact that there are all these hundreds of people who take so much time to 100% songs on expert difficulty. When I ask how long it took them to get that good, many of them say "upwards to a year", and I'm just sitting there like "If you're gonna spend THAT much time perfecting it, then why not take up a real instrument?" It rarely takes more than even a month to learn t well enough to be dragged in to the point where you play it so much it overpowers even your gaming desire. I especially try to ask people who play expert if they've ever considered the instrument. They'll obviously have some damn good H & E coordination considering what they do. I could go on forever with stories but that's all I really want to type. I fully understand your point of view and I respect it equally but being a musician is kinda like being in a strongly religious... well religion that you feel strongly about and that makes you happy. You just wanna spread the word. I wonder if you're even gonna read this far =P who cares, I'm now just rambling :D
