Resident Evil Upgrades Can Now Be Reversed On PC

The original move presented all sorts of problems, and now Capcom has reversed course.

Upgrades for numerous Resident Evil games went live after Capcom's Showcase this week, and players quickly found out that it comes with the concession of not being able to choose lower quality settings anymore. That was short-lived, as the company said in a tweet that it received an "overwhelming response" about this and is now reversing course.

"Due to overwhelming response from the Steam community, we've reactivated the previous version that does not include ray-tracing and enhanced 3D audio," Capcom said. Going forward, both the enhanced and previous versions of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 will be available. Capcom also published instructions for how to roll back to the earlier version of each title.

  • Click LIBRARY in Steam client.
  • Right-click the game and select ""Properties...""
  • In the pop-up menu, select ""BETAS""
  • From the pull-down menu, select ""dx11_non-rt"" (Note: password not required)
  • Close the pop-up menu and let the Steam client auto-update the game
  • You should be able to launch the game normally once the update completes
  • Please note some of the in-game option settings will be reset as a result of the rollback process.
  • If you would like to update the game to the new version again, simply select ""None"" from the pull-down menu in Step 4 above.

Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7 all received big visual upgrades this week on consoles and PC, with Resident Evil Village getting its own later this year. On consoles this means you can download native Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions of each game now, with older versions persisting on older consoles (and, in the case of the PlayStation 5, on newer ones too).

This improvement on PC normally wouldn't be an issue, but there are a couple of reasons why this has caused problems. Firstly, the minimum requirements for each game have now increased, which means you might not be able to play them at all if you were previously just scraping by. The games are also now exclusively using DirectX 12, which is required for features like ray tracing, but means that older Windows support and compatibility with many mods (including popular VR ones) is gone.

Resident Evil Village is getting a similar update in October, which also includes the game's first story expansion and new features for its Mercenaries mode, including the ability to play as Lady Dimitrescu.

The article has been updated.
Now it says CAPCOM is reversing course and giving players the option.
A win for consumers and for common sense.

so they are ruining even the few remaining single player non-gaas games?

raytracing and 3d audio are cool but you know if their idea is to keep this kind of games "live" eventually they will go the way of apple and others and say "we cant support this 2013 version, the 2015 version and the 2022 version of the game so the 2013 version will be dropped" so people who bought the original game will be shown middle fingers. at some point all the updating gets too complicated.

i rather take no upgrades at all than have to balance "will my game x work next week?" because to me the release date of a game doesnt matter one bit i play games made in 1983, 1996, 2005 and 2013 equally. if anything, post-2017 release date has warning signs due to this kind of trash all over it.

Talk about tone deaf. They should have never forced it to begin with, this would be like making last gen versions of the game unplayable on those consoles and forcing players to upgrade to the new generation.

PC Gamers got voice in this industry. Thank god for Steam.

I have a 30 series GPU but still the turnaround for a fix was so impressive.

Oh god yes! More stable, working TAA and not messy hair that looks like Lara's hair in potato settings 640x480 Tomb Raider 2013 (recent RX 6600 upgrade btw).

This game was awaited by a lot of people, and you can easily find players with potatoes, outdated hardware and APUs there. This is a remake of a very old game that lots of people wanted to see again, good thing Capcom got their head out of their ass.

My PC will be 10 years old come November. I have never updated anything apart from the mouse and keyboard. I could play the RE2 and RE3 remakes before on low settings. It is absolutely unacceptable that I have paid £60 for these games and I can no longer play them.

@ianw I just cant believe that developers did not thought how old and shitty your PC is, its pretty much the same, if you would buy ps4 version of the game and complain that its not working on ps2

@storjohan_: Scarcely an accurate description. It was over £1400 excluding the monitor when I bought it. And have had virtually no issues with it. Why the hell should I need to upgrade it? My TV is 15 years old next month. My amp and speakers were bought in the early 80's which I've been using virtually every single day since.

People are brainwashed by our capitalistic society into replacing stuff all the time.

@ianw: Your pc is old and shitty and obviously barely works, doesn't matter if it cost 50000$ when you got it. If one simple patch brakes your performance, maybe just maybe think about a little upgrade?

@storjohan_: There's not much point. Buying a new graphics card will be held back by the processer speed and whatever. I'll buy a new PC in about a year's time or so.

You were planning to update anyway? why waste your typos with these jerks?

Still, not being able to run a game that worked well and you paid for it is simply unaceptable.

Yeah, this is a big deal.
I like really, really smooth framerates when I play,
so I'll often drop the settings way down so minimum FPS is always above 120.
I can't do that any more which means I can't play the game the way I want any more.
Which means they've effectively stolen back the experience I already paid for.

@nintendians: imagine doing that when you can't get a refund. They are forcing pirating on us because the mandatory new version on steam doesn't work as intended. Farcry 3 did this to me and I haven't looked back.

It's BS, we had phenomenal 3D mods that require DX11 and now they're not usable with this new patch. They should just give an option on Steam to rollback to the previous version, many games offer that.

It wouldn’t bug me.. but I can understand for those with hardware that isn’t as good… it could make the game unplayable for some
