Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles Hands-On

Capcom is taking the classic survival horror series in a rather unexpected direction on the Wii.

Ever since Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles was announced at Electronic Entertainment Expo last year, we've been wondering exactly what style of game would mark the famed horror series' debut on Nintendo's quirky new console. After last night's Capcom press event, we not only got to find out what the game is like, we got to play it for ourselves. Are you ready for this? It's a light gun game. Granted, there's no actual light gun peripheral available for the system, but the Wii Remote serves that function just fine.

We were admittedly hoping for something with a little more depth than an on-rails shooter. But then, what the game may lack in depth, it will probably more than make up for in breadth because it covers story material from Resident Evils 0, 1, 2, and 3, (and possibly some Code Veronica, we're not entirely sure yet), with some new story elements describing the downfall of the Umbrella Corporation thrown in for good measure.

The playable demo we saw was set in the classic, creepy mansion from the original Resident Evil and was said to be using graphical assets from the RE remake that hit the GameCube some years back. The gameplay in TUC is darn easy to figure out. You use the Wii Remote to control your onscreen crosshair, hit up or down on the D pad to cycle between weapons, and shake the remote vigorously to reload whenever your ammo is depleted (the remaining supply of which is indicated by a little ring around the crosshair). You can use the Nunchuk's analog stick to look around a little, but your movement is entirely controlled by the game; once you've killed all the enemies in a given scene, you'll start walking automatically to the next area.

Expect to shoot a whole lot of these as you attempt to bring down Umbrella.
Expect to shoot a whole lot of these as you attempt to bring down Umbrella.

So yeah, you point at the screen and shoot zombies. Lots of zombies! Occasionally, you also shoot some evil crows and demon dogs and the like. Our demo had us walking through a number of familiar locations, from the large front entry hall to the corridor where those dogs famously first jump through the windows and attack. In addition to all the shooting, you'll occasionally come across a timed action scene that makes you hit the A button as soon as a cue flashes onscreen to avoid taking damage from a surprise attack of some kind. These sequences bring the camera out to third-person perspective, which is when we realized we were playing as Chris Redfield. Jill Valentine was close behind with her own weapon, but she never contributed to the fighting.

Interactions with the environment seemed limited in our demo. You can pick up objects by moving the cursor over them until they turn blue and then hit the A button. We were able to score a shotgun and submachine gun in addition to our default pistol, as well as the classic green herb to restore some health. There will also be a few points where you can choose to take a detour, such as an optional side room off a hallway. The game will pop up a quick cue asking you to hit the A button if you want to head off to the side, but these will typically only last a few moments before you head back to your original path. Finally, you can shoot a lot of stuff in the maps. For instance, a well-placed shotgun blast could knock a bunch of paintings off the wall. It also seemed like most of the lights in the level could be shot out, although that usually seemed disadvantageous for us because it just made it harder to see the enemies we were trying to kill.

You'll need quick timing to survive the occasional third-person surprise attack.
You'll need quick timing to survive the occasional third-person surprise attack.

It was said during a presentation that The Umbrella Chronicles will feature two main characters. And after our demo, it seems a safe bet that Chris Redfield is one of them. But who's the other? We assume it will be another Resident Evil mainstay; maybe his sister Claire, but there's no telling for sure right now. What is sure is that we'll be seeing a lot of familiar locations from past games--hopefully in a new light--as the story of Umbrella's decline is filled in and fleshed out. Capcom hasn't announced a release date for the game yet, so we'll follow its development and bring you Resident Evil fanatics more information as we get it.

People keep saying it's "too much" like HOTD. But what you guys might not realize is there have been a couple other Resident Evil Rail shooters. Dead AIM is one. Survivor is another one I think.

What's to think about the two main characters? If Chris is one of them, the other one could be Wesker.

I really interested in this game and with the release of RE4... I am even more interested in this game. I'm just worried that it'll be a short game with very little replay value. Then again Star Fox 64 was like less then 6 hours long. But that depended on what you did. None the less, I got that game when it first came out. I might rent it if its shorter then 6 hours long. So we'll have to see. I'm pretty sure that I'll get it Unbrella Chronicles sooner then later.

This is exactly what people wanted when Resident Evil 1 was released. The orginal game captured a sense of impending doom and overwhelming odds. That was the thrill in the game, and to tell you the truth a diffrent flavor then just walking around like a hound looking for clues is a good change for me. The Wii system is being used for what it does best. Interaction with the player on a new level. For anyone to say this idea was dumb is blind to the fact that your boring. This game looks very exciting and the only problem I would have with it is if its short like HOTD. I want a long MMORPG shooter type game because I get more value for my dollar. Why have a game thats 4 hours long and then after that your bored. I'd rather be 30+ hours into something and be able to save it and continue when I choose. Well see when the game is released if its any good or a flop. I'm betting it will turn some heads. (PEACE)

now that i think about it, how long will it be? it's fun to play time crisis or house of the dead cause they took like 20 min to finish but i don't see myself playing an on rails game for more than 4 hours and neither buying a game that it lasts less than 20

the only thing that exites me about this game is that it will explain a lot about the previous games, so as soon it comes out i'll enter this same page click "hits and cheats" and read a faq with spoilers

i don't know if i'm excited for this game or not. i was really disappointed when i heard it was an on-rail game, but it 's like 4 games' stories in one, and i haven't had a chance to play RE 0, 2, 0r 3. i think it would be better if they just remade all four of these games as one $50 game for the wii. i know it's not gonna happen, but a man can dream can't he...

there are really high expectations after RE4 and i don't think this game will fill them. "Reminds me too much of 'House of the Dead' " i don't think "too much" would be enough

Very excited here. Hoping this will finally wrap up sooo many loose ends left from the first several games. I like light gun games too, so I can definitely like a Resident Evil light gun game. I bet Nintendo releases their gun peripheral just for this game.

Why not just wrap the story line in the RE4 engine. Playing through all those environments again with RE4 game play would be something I would really be interested in. But, a light gun shooter...not so much. If Capcom thinks people are willing to buy RE4 again, and in some cases for a third time, just to play it with the Wii remote...then they are right. But, they should have considered how many of those people would have been fanatic about the whole series from the RE4 point of view. Oh Well...

Graphics I've seen look good and the concept is interesting, but I'm finding it hard to feel "it" with this game. Maybe the finished project will be really fleshed out and end up being one of those "great underground hits that people try to find later and can't"

Punching Capcom in the ear .. heh .. they would knock you down before you could say " Jill Sandwich " .. Anyways .. I like what I have seen and heard so far about this game .. I like the idea .. I know it is just screen shots and videos .. but I think this game is gonna look good .. I don't mind haveing my freedom of movement stripped away from me .. and .. eh .. I was gonna say more .. but I lost it .. so yeah .. WOO HOO for this game ..

With previouse comments I disagree about the graphics remarks, These are just screen shots and movies, that do the actuall game no justice, and we can't really give a final verdict till we play the game. To the next subject of gameplay and the story of the game, an on rail shooter is always good fun in my books, as a die hard Resi fan, there are parts that those hidden files and dossiers you find hidden in all the other games, just don't fill in those vital parts of the story. And theres major things I'd like to understand, why the hell is ada alive, same for wesker, and its fun watching the story unfold as scientists from the game go mental =] and then turn into 50 foot tall monsters of death doom and glory. I enjoy games that require quick reactions as well, keepsyou going and yo ucan really get into them. I'm looking fowards to this title.

I have to admit that when I first heard that this game would be an on-rails light gun game, I kind of thought it would suck. I couldn't really picture Resident Evil working in that kind of scenario - it always was HUGE on puzzles and all that. I questioned how much story you could fit into an on-rails shooter, as well. But I gotta say, these bits of gameplay footage have shown me that, once again, Capcom has proven me wrong. This game looks like it has the potential to kick some serious ass. I'm definitely going to be keeping my eye on it now.

I just hope that it actually has a co-op mode somewhat like you can do in Time Crisis and Area 51 (classic lightgun game). That way you can get more use out of it than playing through shooting zombies, although that is fun, there is hardly any replayability or added fun factor if you and a friend can't break through the zombies in some co-op type of fashion. IMHO. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what they do with it. Currently it's defnitely on my wish list.

'OMGRAPHIXSUX' I don't understand what everyone is talking about. The graphics do justice to this type of game; I can't find one good explanation about how the graphics suck. Didn't Nintendo Wii owners agree quite some time ago that the system wasn't about graphics but about gameplay?

@LLsmooth "Where are the Wii haters at to say that these graphics look "last gen"? The graphics look amazing and is a testament to the fact that great graphics can be produced on the Wii. Case closed." err, the graphics of this game are completly UGLY, so shut up! Even if I don't really care since I still play PS2 games, lol. I play the good games, not the most beautifull ones, but you cannot say that this game have great graphics :S. ps: I'll buy a next-gen console when a good game will grace it ( MGS4=PS3, blue dragon =x360, FF crystal chronicles=wii )

There really should've been a light gun game released at the Wii launch. It's the perfect type of game for the new Wiimote. I'm definitely on board with this. Now if they would only add some of those old school light gun games to the VC. Like Chiller. You guys remember that sick bit of programming? Anyone who likes RE would buy Chiller on the VC-especially the arcade version.

I think that sounds brilliant. Yeah, It may be a light-gun game and Survivor was crap in my opinion but the set-path is something new to Resident Evil so... also, I hope you can swing your Wii Remote to slash with your knife like Resident Evil Deadly Silence (DS) with the stylus.
