Report: PS4 will let you pre-load games starting in April

Infamous developer Sucker Punch says the functionality will arrive next month.

PlayStation 4 owners will be able to pre-load titles beginning next month, the Sony-owned Infamous: Second Son developer Sucker Punch Productions has said on Twitter.

"No preload until April," the studio said, responding to gamers who said they were eager to download the digital version of Second Son as soon as possible.

Sony has yet to officially announce pre-loading functionality for the PS4. But if any studio might know Sony's plans, it's likely to be a first-party developer like Sucker Punch.

Microsoft is also planning to introduce pre-loading for Xbox One games, though the company has not said when this functionality will be unlocked.

PC gamers have enjoyed pre-loading for a long time now, as both Steam and Origin allow users to download games and begin playing when the clock strikes midnight.

Infamous: Second Son launched today exclusively for PS4. For more, check out GameSpot's review and what other critics are saying.

Since you have to install the game on the hard drive anyway but still need the disc inside the drive to play the game if you bought the disc version one option I wouldn't mind would be to download and install the game ahead of time and then as soon as you buy the retail copy you can pop it in and start playing. It would save some time versus waiting for it to install like now. Obviously this option may not work for people with data caps but not everybody has a cap. It would be great for people who aren't into digital distribution and still insist on hard copies.

Do you guys hear that??? That is the sound of Gamestop dying even more. LOL. You kind of felt Microsoft hinting at this with Titanfall release (but you felt them holding back because they couldn't afford for retail to be angry at them), But Sony (apparently with the bigger pair and not giving a damn about retail) coming right out and saying that pre-loading is coming.

Now, come on...at least give us a $5.00 discount since we do not get disks, booklets, and a case -- is that too much to ask?

Seriously what they should do is a $10 greatest hits line after a game has reached certain sales numbers.

Now if only the prices of digital games were significantly lower than their retail counterparts, maybe people would actually buy digital copies.

@randomkidlol Just join one of the gamer clubs that certain retailers offer. Best Buy has one where you get 20% off all game titles, which is absolutely amazing. It might cost a bit up front, but as someone who purchases certain games (generally small studio titles) day one, it's a money saver. Even if you wait for the AAA titles to go on sale a week after launch, which they typically do now-a-days, you still save a decent chunk of money.

And purchasing digital copies is a complete rip off. You can't trade the games in and get any money back for them, and you have to constantly manage your hard drive (even if you expand it).

<< LINK REMOVED >> I enjoy the convenience of digital downloads, i have plenty of hard drive space for all of the games i want, and the cost of me purchasing this stuff on sale digitally (steam of course) is still much lower than purchasing it at a retailer when its on sale.

The sooner retailers are cut from the equation (which MS tried to do last May only to be greeted with the tears of crazies who fear change) the sooner it will happen. You know why publishers get a way with low prices on PC? Because the PC retail business has been dead in the water for years.

That won't happen until the world over has better internet support. We are a decades away from that. This is why many stated they would not buy an xbox1 when it was first announced.

I installed a 1 tb hybrid drive in my ps4. Over 20 games on it now, not counting indies, still have around 500 gigs left.

You have to install the games anyway. I think Sony will eventually have to 180 and offer external HDD support like MS plans to. Swapping out a HDD with increasingly bigger models is not a good way to operate.

Using up bandwidth is an issue for many people. As for the HDD swap, it's very easy and usually cheap, but external support would be nice.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Sony have had a few good deals on their downloadable games (not at the same level as Steam.) Though this is through sales and not the retail value, which I agree is what needs to change if anyone's going to buy new games digital.

I really miss the days when I could get excited enough about a new game to count down until I could play. Of course back then the issue was successfully getting your hands on a copy. Ah, the days of cartridges and limited chip supply to make them.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Don't put any weight into metacritic, there's no method of ownership verification so the user reviews have zero credibility as far as I'm concerned. 90% of user reviews are either 10s or 0s it seems. Even when it comes to critic reviews you have to take them with a grain of salt, there's plenty of money under the table when it comes to big business (especially with major exclusive titles in this case) so you can't expect all of them to be genuine.

I mean that not only leaves the entire number system unused, but saturation towards the top will make it hard to distinguish great games from the good.

@Xristophoros @CrusaderForever@blackaceUmm, where did I say an 80 metacritic is poor? I am talking about the poor REVIEWS of 6/10. 80 is a great rating, just think this is a 90 metacritic game. Take it easy, it's just my honest opinion.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> if you think an 80 score is "poor" then you need to change your expectations and look at games more critically. far too many games have been given a free pass over the years, especially nintendo franchises. people have become snobby and need to see 9s or 10s or else they trash it. very few games actually deserve scores in that bracket. infamous was fairly judged. an 80 is great and a must buy in my books.
